DO YOU NEED BATTERIES FOR SOLAR?

DO YOU NEED BATTERIES FOR SOLAR?

Do you need batteries for Solar?

Not necessarily, since there is Net Metering, where the utility readily gets the excess energy from solar installations and credits you for it — like a virtual battery. For the most part, however, our clients in the Philipines want solar panels for bill reduction purposes and to maximize investments. In such instances, the solar power system does NOT need a battery.

We do, however, have some discerning clients who want the redundancy and the reliability of instant backup power that a battery can provide during power outages. They also want to maximize excess solar harvest by storing them in batteries for evening consumption.

Lithium Batteries are part of our technological toolbox as we have clients who ask for their capabilities. Batteries are needed if you need your solar setup to run during a power outage. Batteries provide a buffer when the sun is not enough and loads have to be supplied with sustained energy. Starting to get common in upscale households who are building new homes without a diesel generator and having things backed up with a Mega Solaric UPS.

At Solaric, we have installed hundreds of setups with batteries for consumers and even fulfilled military contracts around the world with our battery tech.  Yeah, we put batteries in systems that were not allowed to go down like RADAR or mission-critical communication systems. Our stuff is way beyond slapping a few Tesla power walls. We design custom systems that can run entire islands or radar facilities perpetually with no diesel, oil, or even grid.

For residential jobs, we have been putting out Lithium based batteries since 2016. Now we are introducing the SMILE Lithium battery hybrid system: a European design award winner and very popular in countries where the government actually pays the consumer to put in batteries to help manage the grid. It works like our regular grid-tie system but with a twist — a smart system that detects if there is excess power and diverts it proportionately to battery charging, before selling it to the utility for a discount. It also detects if the entire house is starting to use grid power and proportionately discharges the battery keeping grid power consumption to zero until the batteries run out. In times of calamities or power outages, it can supply a steady 5000w of critical loads until the batteries run out, and gets recharged by the sun the next day. It’s actually quite beneficial and self-sustaining if one only puts the essentials such as lights, fans, refrigerators, Wi-Fi on the always powered circuit.

We designed the system to be modular, battery capacities can be added by paralleling 5.7 kWh modules at a time and maxing out 15 kWh per inverter — or the capability to store 75% of a day’s sun harvest for brownout or peak time evening use.

These solar panels in the Philippines are installed and requested by those who are serious about planning for major earthquakes, typhoons, or dealing with areas with poor power availability.

Our lithium battery systems are not cheap, but they have a ten-year warranty on the battery components and are really milestones ahead in the market. We would also have to assess properly and ask some detailed questions about your appliances, budget, expectations, and the like.

Battery-based systems are more complex beasts. They cost about 40% to 70% more than our popular battery-less grid-tie systems. Yes, there is a price for peace — the price of having power in your house after a major storm, of having power during a blackout or earthquake. That in itself is priceless for most.

WHAT’S THE BUZZ ON SOLAR THIS 2019?

WHAT’S THE BUZZ ON SOLAR THIS 2019?

What are the figures?

Statistics reveal that the total volume of annual deployed solar energy in the Philippines and in other countries will increase by 18% this year 2019, according to IHS Markit. The figure is an expectation of 123GW to be installed in 2019.

IHS Markit also indicated that Egypt, Argentina, Spain, South Africa, and Vietnam will deploy approximately 8.5GW of solar.

The two biggest solar markets in the world are the United States and China. In the last few years, China has been responsible for almost half of all solar installed globally. This year, that figure will decrease to one third. Despite these two nations stepping on the brakes and slowing down on solar, the estimated figure remains 123GW.

A recent report by Wood Mackenzie Power & Renewables expects annual solar installations from 2023 onwards to rise to more than 14GW, compared to the 2018 figure of 11.1GW.

A peek at Cali

Starting year 2020, all new homes in California will be required to incorporate rooftop solar. This marked a historical and significant development for clean and renewable energy in the Sunshine State. This initiative alone is projected to reduce electrical costs by 53%, which translates to $1.7 billion in energy costs in the course of the next 30 years.

All new residences and major home renovations on buildings that are under three stories fall under the new regulation, effective January 1, 2020. The new rules apply specifically to all new residences and major home renovations on buildings under three stories, starting on January 1, 2020. In the event a building isn’t suitable for a rooftop array, the standards require homes have access to community solar or offset energy usage through additional efficiency gains, while some homes may be exempt.

In California, approximately 15,000 new homes are built each year that have solar panels installed, according to the CEC. When the new standards take effect, that number is expected to jump to around 100,000 new solar homes per year.

What is the energy agenda of the Philippines?

When will the Philippines require solar as part of home construction? This is the surefire way to normalize the technology for millions of Filipinos nationwide. There will be a significant, positive, lasting effect. It is about time for Filipinos to benefit from the efficiency of turning on the sun. The direct result would be enormous savings on utility bills, which average to Php8,000 monthly. That equates to about Php100,000 yearly, which can fund the tuition of a student in a private educational institution.

“The Philippines should require all new homes to be Net Zero Energy, which means they produce more energy than they consume. This would also mean their monthly electric bill would be Zero, hence the net-zero concept,” says Solaric President Mike De Guzman. “Imagine all houses and buildings to be net zero by 2030. That amounts to millions of pesos in savings, as well as a significant contribution to a safer and healthier planet — because of the reduced greenhouse gas emissions!”

CONSUMERS ASK SOLARIC: HM FOR SOLAR?

CONSUMERS ASK SOLARIC: HM FOR SOLAR?

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
December 27, 2018

The millennial question

The question is simple. It encompasses the meaning of multiple things but it is posted in the form of two letters: HM? The questions behind those two letters are endless. How much? What is the ROI? What is the capital investment? How much do I save? Everyone wants to know the cost of installing solar panels in the Philippines. They want to know, by asking those two letters, which option is more feasible: to install a solar power system or to keep paying a monthly electric bill until the end of time.

Contemplation stage

Some put it off, and others decide to do it later or put money into another investment. But as certain as the sun that will rise the next day, we absolutely guarantee that those without a solar investment are committed to continue paying one of Asia’s highest electricity rates.

The pay-off is forever

There is a growing percentage of people who use technology to solve problems. Solaric has been installing solar panels for the past 5 years, and our first batch of customers have fully rewarded with ROI for their solar investment. They are now getting free power from the sun. We have seen the birth of the rooftop solar industry from pricey per watt fringe science to becoming the cheapest and most available energy source, because every consumer becomes a producer of power. Forever.

Talk about net metering

Solaric was the pioneer behind Net Metering. We installed solar in the very first homes that sold power back to the utility company via Net Metering. This is how we made the battery obsolete, and this is how solar power became way cheaper than your Utility cost. It is by sizing solar installations properly that the system can effortlessly power daytime loads, and therefore sell surplus power back to the utility company. At night, the homes run on export credits. Net Metering is something that Solaric handles and processes every single day for our customers, although it is not yet fully understood by the typical, casual consumer.

Go ahead and ask: HM?

For questions like “magkano, HM, ROI atbp”: We need to know some information before we can give an accurate answer – typical monthly electric bill total, usual appliances that run during daytime, roof space feasibility. For a technical thing like energy systems, Solaric conducts free site inspections within Metro Manila. The quintessential question of HM can range anywhere from P35k to the legal maximum of P6.5M (e.g. 99.9kWp net metered installation).

5 REASONS TO CELEBRATE SOLAR THIS 2018

5 REASONS TO CELEBRATE SOLAR THIS 2018

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
December 22, 2018

What a fantastic year 2018 has been for solar systems in the Philippines! To end this record-breaking 2018 alongside the yuletide season, here are 8 reasons to celebrate the solar revolution.

  • PH ranked number 1 in Asia in solar power (and 5th worldwide)

The Philippines not only hosts 7 of the 50 biggest solar projects globally, but the nation also made it to the top spot among developing countries in Asia for solar power, in terms of using solar photovoltaic systems for generating power, according to a firm report by Dutch consultancy firm. Another Rotterdam-based firm, Solarplaza, placed the Philippines fifth globally, following Chile, South Africa, Brazil, and Thailand.

  • PH held its first public consultation for Senate Bill 1719, otherwise known as the Solar Adoption Act

In November 2018, author of SB 1719 Senator Grace Poe, alongside Senate Energy Committee Chair Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, held a Senate hearing and sought to correct operational flaws of the 2008 Renewable Energy Act. These include the removal of the 100kWp limit for solar installation per meter, review of buy back rates to be at parity with retail electricity rates, ease of financing, and expedited permitting for solar projects.

  • PV prices continue to drop

Solar continues to boom in popularity, precisely because the solar PV prices have continued to drop, making rooftop solar more affordable and feasible for the average citizen.

  • More than 5,000 trained on SOLAR101 and SOLAR202

Several years ago, Filipinos did not really know much about solar energy or understand the technical applications behind solar panels and PV technology. Then Solaric stepped in and trained them on solar power and solar panel systems through monthly SOLAR101 and SOLAR202 seminar workshops. To date, there have been over 5,000 who have completed the certificate course.

  • Global trends show that there will be a strong market increase of 25% for solar next year

PV Info Link released data early this month that reflected a strong market increase of 25% for solar next year. PV Info Link analysts claim that 16 countries around the globe will increase its solar capacity by more than 1 GigaWatt, with a total estimate for next year at around 112 GW. Data was based on statistical numbers and solar targets of countries worldwide.

Solaric is the leader in rooftop solar

Solaric has established its name across the renewable industry as a proven and reputable rooftop solar leader. Solaric has installed more than 50% of residential rooftop solar in the Philippines and has delivered significant cost reductions in electricity expenses, as well as milestone contributions to a cleaner, greener, and renewable future. Solaric is now zoning in on corporate and industrial projects to offer them the same cost reductions. Welcome to the new generation of solar and turning on the sun.

It’s almost 2019.

Of course there’s a game plan. It’s almost 2019 and Filipinos are being ushered into the era of solar energy and sustainable living. “Solaric still has a lot of work to do. If the Philippines does its part to reverse climate change, our country needs to install at least 300 MegaWatts a year of solar rooftop,” says Solaric President Mike De Guzman.

GERRY LOVES HIS ZERO BILL

GERRY LOVES HIS ZERO BILL

A Satisfied Solaric Client Shows Us His Solar Home

REGINA ROME

Manila, Philippines
December 21, 2018

In an exclusive, gated, private neighborhood of a quiet subdivision in the South, stands a majestic, beautiful, 500 square meter, 3-bedroom contemporary Filipino-style solar home. Solaric can absolutely deliver the Zero Bill promise. Just ask Gerry, another satisfied Solaric client.

The choice to go solar

In 2017, Gerry decided to install solar panels at home. He approached Solaric and they conducted a site inspection. His daily household appliances included a washing machine, dryer, two refrigerators, two water pumps, three television sets, 11 air conditioners, and a home theater. His electric bill amounted to an average of 10 to 11 thousand pesos each month. Solaric offered an array of solar options that would give him optimum power at the lowest cost. Gerry selected efficiency and long-term financial feasibility by having 40 rooftop solar panels installed (12 kilowatts).

The reward of going solar

A couple months after installing solar, Gerry received his first Zero Bill (total amount due of Php0.00 in his monthly electric bill).

“The moment the Net Metering kicked in, I got a Zero Bill. Then, all succeeding months were all zero bills!” exclaimed Gerry, as he showed us his stack of zero bills accumulated the past year.

All about the pogi points

When asked to discuss the profitability of his solar power system, Gerry paused for a moment’s reflection. “Yes, I’m able to save 10 to 11 thousand a month. But we don’t talk about ROI (return on investment) in these cases. Anong ROI in buying an expensive car? Pogi points!” Gerry laughs in amusement. “It’s really about utilizing whatever is renewable, and solar was the only thing that was feasible. I’ve been planning on installing solar even before the house was constructed.”

Zeroing in on the zero bill

Gerry brings the zero bill phenomenon unders a different light. “What does the zero bill mean to me? Sure, one part of it is about savings – I have a monthly electric bill that says zero. It makes everyone in the house scream with happiness. On the other hand, my investment pay-off is renewable energy. Sustainability. I care about the environment and the planet. This is my contribution to saving our future. That is what makes solar worth it!”

Leader in rooftop solar

Solaric has established its name across the renewable industry as a proven and reputable rooftop solar leader. Solaric has installed more than 50% of residential rooftop solar in the Philippines and has delivered significant cost reductions in electricity expenses, as well as milestone contributions to a cleaner, greener, and renewable future. SOLARIC TURNS ON THE KINDNESS FOR ABANDONED ANGELS

SOLARIC TURNS ON THE KINDNESS FOR ABANDONED ANGELS

A Christmas Gift from Solaric to A Home for the Angels

REGINA ROME

December 2, 2018

According to a recent survey, up to 100 children are abandoned and turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development every two months. With Christmas fast approaching, these children will not have a family to rejoice and celebrate with. Solaric, the leading provider of solar panels in the Philippines, discovered this and Founders Mike and Jade De Guzman decided that turning on the sun will have no real value if it didn’t come with turning on the kindness too.

A Home for the Angels

In 1995, too many newborn babies were being abandoned in public comfort rooms and garbage dumps. Appalled by the horror of such lack of humanity, A Home for the Angels was built to shelter unwanted and abandoned children. The sanctuary is situated on the corner of Augusto Francisco and Coral Streets in San Andres, Bukid.

To this day, more than 600 abandoned babies have been saved by this house and nurtured with hope and love. That summarizes its vision: a loving family and home for every child.

Turn On The Kindness

Upon visiting A Home for the Angels, Solaric conducted a site inspection on the 2-storey house that ran a 24/7 operation and noticed a stack of high electric bills. That’s when Solaric decided to step in and give the abandoned angels a Christmas gift they needed and deserved.

“There is a great need for solar. Not only for A Home for the Angels, but for the entire country,” says Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp.

Solaric installed solar panels on the roof of the home. Now, the angels can enjoy the benefits of unlimited and guilt-free aircon during daytime. Savings from this solar investment will be used for better quality healthcare, education, and a Christmas celebration for the children.

“Thank you so much Solaric for answering our prayers. You are heaven-sent. We are so grateful. Such a big blessing!” says the Founder of A Home for the Angels, with tears of joy in her eyes.

This Christmas, let us all join hands and celebrate the spirit of love and giving. Let’s all #TurnOnTheKindness.

There’s a solution to every problem

PV Info Link released data last week that meant a strong market increase of 25% for solar panles in the Philippines and across the world next year. PV Info Link analysts claim that 16 countries around the globe will increase its solar capacity by more than 1 GigaWatt. The module sales estimated for next year was at around 112 GW. Data was based on statistical numbers and solar targets of countries worldwide.

Huge population and huge solar capacity

Last year, China raked in its share of installed global PV capacity and records show that they installed more than half the world market. Although this is expected to decrease next year, Europe states are expected to increase their share of solar capacity.

Tell me what’s trending

Global trends expected next year include: increased partnerships and consolidation among manufacturers due to cost reduction, decreased prices for PV panels and solar products, larger or thicker modules, advanced solar technologies, increased solar product efficiency due to advances, developed bifacial modules, robots that clean solar panels, building-integrated PV (BIPV), drones that monitor solar farms, conduct preventive maintenance, further developments in inverters, and solar cars (specifically Kia and Hyundai).

What about the Pinoys?

The Solar Show Philippines 2019 says it loud and clear: The future is solar. With the Solar Adoption Act being brewed, the Philippines is clearly on the renewable path towards a more sustainable 2030. Philippines has joined the humanity in addressing global warming caused by greenhouse gas pollution. It’s almost 2019 and Filipinos are being ushered into the era of solar energy and sustainable living.

Solaric still has a lot of work to do. If the Philippines does its part to reverse climate change, our country needs to install at least 300 MegaWatts a year of solar rooftop,” says Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. Yes, the vision is promising in as much as it is inspiring. The solar revolution is just getting started.

COLD STORAGE FACILITY TURNS ON THE SUN AND SAVES 1.35 MILLION EACH YEAR

COLD STORAGE FACILITY TURNS ON THE SUN AND SAVES 1.35 MILLION EACH YEAR

How Solaric Benefits Cold Storage Facilities

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
December 1, 2018

A cold storage facility located in the Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental invested in a 99.9 kWp Solaric System in December of 2016. Revisiting it two years later, join us as we take a peek at the actual numbers.

There’s a solution to every problem

In 2016, the cold storage company had two main concerns: they wanted to lower their monthly electricity expenses and they wanted to contribute to a safe and green planet. To address the situation, they approached Solaric Corporation, the industry leaders in solar panels in the Philippines. After hammering out the feasibility, details, and projections, the cold storage company made an outright purchase for the solar power system.

Turning on the sun

The Solaric System leverages a 99.9 kWp photovoltaic solar installation. The Solaric System was executed within a 45-day period, which included site inspection, securing of permits, and installation. As an investment, the solar installation was set to ROI in 5.6 years.

Figures in the raw

Exploring the figures in-depth and based on current solar prices and calculations, ROI will be achieved faster, within 4.5 years. Annual savings are up to 1.35 Million.

How that particular Solaric system saves the planet

By installing a Solaric System, the cold storage facility reduced the demand for fossil fuels, limited greenhouse gas emissions, and this shrinks its carbon footprint. To paint a clearer and more vivid picture of how the solar panel installation saves and protects the environment and its benefits, here are some facts derived from this particular solar installation case study in Dumaguete. This Solaric System reduces greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 491 passenger driven vehicles per year. This translates to 307 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled. The solar panel system also eliminates the same amount of carbon emissions that would result from 216 barrels of oil consumed, 10,502 gallons of gasoline consumed, and 9.7 tons of coal burned each year. The solar energy from this system will prevent CO2 pollution from going into the atmosphere every year, saving 2,417 tree seedlings grown for 10 years, and 45 hectares of forests in one year!

A GLIMPSE INTO A BRIGHT SOLAR FUTURE

A GLIMPSE INTO A BRIGHT SOLAR FUTURE

Solar technologies you would want to watch out for

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
December 1, 2018

It’s almost 2019 and the future of solar tech—such as solar panels in the Philippines—is hotter than ever. We’re talking about solar robots, solar drones, double-sided solar panels, solar on water, the works; and the list just goes on and on.

Solar boom throwback

A decade ago, when the concept of solar power was merely a lightbulb moment, an idea, a vision, the underlying question sitting on the back seat was: is solar going to make it big? Now, ten years later, the solar boom is just as mind-blowing as the BPO boom of the early 2000s.

Today, the market is flooded with a vast array of solar tech options: crystalline silicon panels, organic and carbon nanotube cells, multi-junction solar cells, thin-film solar panels, solar farms, solar plants, and a variety of other solar power generation hubs. Solar on roofs, solar on land, and even solar on water.

Robots that clean solar panels

Solar panels require routine maintenance, because wind blows dirt, debris, or sand onto the panels, and this could lead to energy production loss and efficiency loss. Having the panels cleaned by module-washing companies doesn’t exactly come cheap either. Another option is to wash the panels manually old school style, using rags and hoses. Another option has recently made itself available: robots. These are further classified into semi-autonomous robots that are placed at the end of each row of panels and moved along accordingly, or fully autonomous robots that run on their own. It’s about time to join the rest of the world as everyone moves towards the advancements of the digital age.

Solar here, there, everywhere

Building-integrated PV (BIPV) is typically known to be designed into materials so that it is part of initial building construction. Today, this represents all sorts of materials that PV can be placed in: roofs, windows, doors, fences, concrete, tiles, anything. Imagine the implications of this. Imagine a structure that can generate power from all angles and all platforms: roof, walls, floors, doors, gates!

Solar tech on a roll

Something new comes up almost every month. Now there are drones that monitor solar farms and conduct preventive maintenance. Then there are developments with the inverters that will contribute to the lower price of solar panels. Then there are two-sided solar panels (referred to as bifacial solar) that capture the sun’s energy and its reflection, which directly results in enhanced efficiency.

In year 2017 alone, the United States installed more than 10 gigawatts of solar. A more rejoicing statistic is the fact that five states in America now generate at least 10% of their electricity from solar. Solar is here and it’s here to stay. Now if only the rest of the world would follow suit.

WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF LAND, THERE’S ALWAYS WATER

WHEN YOU RUN OUT OF LAND, THERE’S ALWAYS WATER

Solar technologies are now available on both land and water

The mind-blowing solar boom

Today, the market is flooded with a vast array of solar tech options: crystalline silicon panels, organic and carbon nanotube cells, multi-junction solar cells, thin-film solar panels in the Philippines, solar farms, solar plants, and a variety of other solar power generation hubs. In year 2017 alone, the United States installed more than 10 gigawatts of solar PV. A more mind-blowing statistic is the fact that five states in America now generate at least 10% of their electricity from solar. Now if only the rest of the world would follow suit.

Rooftop solar PV is now better, cheaper, and cooler

The solar PV market has taken a quantum leap. As of the moment, silicon photovoltaic panels are leading the race. The debate on the streets is about which tech is going to rule in a few years. Whatever it is, no matter which way it is turned around, it still remains the power of the sun. Countries all over the world are now eyeing the possibility of requiring all new homes to install solar.

Then there was Tesla

The Tesla solar roof tiles seem to have never really become the hit we imagined it would become. Speculations declare that the problem was the competition in terms of price. The typical rooftop solar prices had dropped so ridiculously low, making residential rooftop solar available to just about anyone. Building integrated PV (BIPV) had difficulty staking its claim in the market because the available alternative was cheaper and more affordable.

Floating solar

The challenge: finding land for solar. The solution: they put solar on water. And so now we have it unraveled before our very eyes: floating PV (which are PV panels mounted on platforms that float on lakes and bodies of water). What are the advantages of these floating solar things? Not too much site preparation required and the panels remain at a cooler temperature which will enhance their efficiency. Although floating PV was born in 2007, it is only beginning to trend this 2018. South Korea boasts its Geumjeon floating solar power plant. Japan and China are lining up to do the same. In 2017 alone, 100 MW of floating PV was installed on the planet. Project talk is that one is set for construction in Indonesia in 2019.
