Emergence of the rooftop solar trend

Going solar is now the trend for the typical Filipino homeowners, as they shift gears towards more sustainable and renewable lifestyles. Rooftop solar through PV technology has become the most affordable and cost-efficient renewable technology of this age. Rooftop PV has become increasingly affordable, especially now as the costs of solar panels in the Philippines have decreased in the last five years.

The rooftop solar tech bill

Senator Grace Poe introduced a bill clamoring for a law promoting the use of solar energy in the midst of ever-increasing electricity costs. Senate Bill No. 1719, an Act known as the “Solar Rooftop Adoption Act of 2017”, promotes the use of solar panels on the rooftop of residential, commercial, industrial, and government buildings by amending Republic Act 9513, or the Renewable Energy Act of 2008.

Highlights of the bill include establishing net metering interconnection standards and pricing methodology, standardization of permits and licensing requirements (by the Department of Energy, Energy Regulatory Commission, National Renewable Energy Board, and Department of Interior and Local Government), development of solar installation loans, installation of solar panels on government buildings, appropriations to carry out the provisions of the Act, and implementing rules and regulations.

The passing of this bill would result in decreased costs in electricity for households and business establishments due to rooftop solar. The Senate committee on Energy, chaired by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, is now examining the bill.

Improving the law that promotes solar

Poe enumerated proposals to enhance the effectivity of the bill and to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar in the country, mainly: removal of the 100-kilowatt cap on distributed generation to allow large-scale electricity consumers to avail of the net metering program; insertion of a provision that the same price should be applied to imported electricity and exported electricity to the grid by end users; standardization of licenses and permits required to install rooftop solar; and the institutionalization of rooftop solar loan programs.

Convenience of rooftop solar

Rooftop solar is convenient. It’s affordable and cost-efficient. Installation takes hours to days. The convenience guaranteed by rooftop solar is unmatched by any other renewable technology known to man.

The solar vision

“In an ideal world, we want to convert all buildings to green buildings. We want all newly constructed homes to install solar. In ten years in an ideal world, I envision all houses to be on solar. By year 2030, majority of the nation’s energy should be derived from renewable energy sources. Only then can we have a clean and renewable Philippines,” added the solar expert Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. “In our own little way, this is how we can contribute to a safer and more sustainable planet.”

THE GARCIA FAMILY SECRET

THE GARCIA FAMILY SECRET

The Real Reason They Chose Solaric

Need to explore options

Pichon and Athena Garcia were married in 2013. When they had their baby boy Thoren, major changes had to be made. Pichon and Athena had to spend most of their time at home. As a baby, Thoren had a lot of rashes and allergies. The doctors prohibited him from being out in the sun for a long period of time. When he was at home, he had to be inside an airconditioned room. Technically, the aircon in the house had to be on all day without having a solar system in the Philippines.

Deciding to invest

Deciding to invest

This happened at a time when Pichon and Athena just finished construction of their home. They had just started their family. They had a baby boy. “I thought having the aircon on all the time was something really expensive. I didn’t know if we could afford it,” said Athena.

They decided to consider installing solar. They were uncertain if it was something they could afford in the long run, but they decided to explore the solar alternative.

What Solaric offered

“Solaric checked our (electric) bill. They offered tailor-fit solutions specific to our needs. They patterned the number of panels they would install based on our monthly power consumption,” Pichon explained.

Solaric installed an off grid solar power system on the roof of the Garcia home, with six solar panels.

Benefits of solar

The results were amazing. The aircon runs all day now for Thoren. The household runs appliances all throughout the day every day without a shred of guilt.

“I can turn on the power anytime I want. We don’t have to worry about electricity!” exclaimed Athena, while playfully cuddling Thoren.

Something to talk about

Something to talk about

“Our friends are envious. On average, they spend about 20 to 30 thousand a month on electric bills. Then they get shocked when they find out our bill is only 5 thousand a month. They can’t seem to believe it. What? How?!” Pichon shares with us in animated fashion.

“And I tell them…we have Solaric,” Pichon adds, while pointing upward to the roof of their house.

“We advocate renewable energy of course. We love the fact that we save money and we save the environment too. That’s win-win all the way!” Athena smiles.

And that is the Garcia family secret – they turned on the sun. So why don’t you do it too?

SENATOR POE PROMOTES THE SOLAR ROOFTOP ADOPTION ACT

SENATOR POE PROMOTES THE SOLAR ROOFTOP ADOPTION ACT

REGINA ROME

Manila, Philippines
November 17, 2018

These are historic and monumental times for clean, safe, and renewable energy in the Philippines. The nation is now recognizing the critical importance of sustainable energy systems.

Senator Poe promotes solar energy

Senator Grace Poe introduced a bill clamoring for a law promoting the use of solar system in the Philippines in the midst of ever-increasing electricity costs.

Highlights of the bill include establishing net metering interconnection standards and pricing methodology, standardization of permits and licensing requirements (by the Department of Energy, Energy Regulatory Commission, National Renewable Energy Board, and Department of Interior and Local Government), development of solar installation loans, installation of solar panels on government buildings, appropriations to carry out the provisions of the Act, implementing rules and regulations,

A greener future

The Philippines is going strong about going green. Even the biggest real estate developers and our government leaders are concerned about environmental consciousness. Sustainable design and structure rule the game and the word is out that to ensure a bright future, we all have to find ways to lead green and sustainable lifestyles. All this brings us to one common path towards a renewable future.

Hooking on to the solar trend

Going solar is one of the more fundamental ways that anyone can shift to a greener lifestyle. Through an array of photovoltaic cells, sunlight is converted to electricity. This has become the most affordable and cost-efficient renewable technology of this era.

“Energy from the sun is unlimited, and that’s a fact for another 5 billion years,” said Solaric President Mike De Guzman, during an interview at the Solaric Showroom in Makati by “Sea Princess” Tessa Prieto-Valdes about going green. He went on to talk about providing clean energy with no greenhouse gas emissions, and the more important issues to address in investing in a solar power system. “With solar, you save money. You save the environment. You are cost-efficient. You avoid increasing power costs. You increase your property value. You assume a dual role by being a consumer and a producer of power. Energy from solar is now cheaper than energy from a new gas burning power plant,” emphasized De Guzman.

Convenience of rooftop solar

Senator Poe, who is also the Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Public Services, added, “The State recognizes energy security and electricity affordability as necessary components of inclusive, sustained and broad-based growth. No other technology, renewable or otherwise, could match the convenient installation attributed to rooftop solar,” as she pressed for the law promoting solar energy.

Aligning visions

“Solaric’s vision is very straightforward, and very aligned to Senator Poe’s vision for rooftop solar. In an ideal world, we want to convert all buildings to green buildings. We want all newly constructed homes to install solar. In ten years, I envision all houses in exclusive subdivisions to be on solar. By year 2030, majority of the nation’s energy should be derived from renewable energy sources. Only then can we have a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Philippines,” added the solar expert De Guzman.

THE SOLARIC SYSTEM: 3 THINGS YOU DON’T REALIZE UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY TURN ON THE SUN

THE SOLARIC SYSTEM: 3 THINGS YOU DON’T REALIZE UNTIL YOU ACTUALLY TURN ON THE SUN

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines

The Solaric System

In 2013, Lito Mercado took a risk. He made a wise investment, turned on the sun, and switched on his newly-installed Solaric Roof, with the latest solar system in the Philippines, in their house in an exclusive gated subdivision in Makati, Philippines.

What’s it like to have solar?

“Well it has been absolutely worth it,” Lito tell Solar Digital Squad. “If you have the finances to make the investment, then do it now. The ROI (return on investment) makes sense. We help save the environment. We spend less. We save more. We have everything to gain and nothing to lose. I wouldn’t hesitate to do it all over again.”

Mercado and his family have always wanted to go solar. Unfortunately, the roof type on their house meant that no solar suppliers would install panels on top of them due to quality and type. In 2013, after yet another round of quotes and site visits, they decided to renovate and replace their roof.

Solaric benefits

“The thing with solar is that the power is generated from the sun. Thanks to all these advances in technology today, we can now actually use the sun to our advantage. We can harness the solar energy and use it to power our homes and businesses!” he exclaims.

Here are three things that Lito learned after installing Solaric and turning on the sun for his house.

  • Protect the planet

Compared to other energy sources, solar energy is the renewable with no negative impact to the environment. No greenhouse and no pollution. Going solar means protecting our planet because it’s green, clean and renewable. The typical residential solar power system eliminates an average of three tons of carbon emissions annually, which is equivalent to planting 100 trees each year.

  • Reduce the electric bill

“As a homeowner, I experienced a lower electric bill. This translated to more savings,” added Lito.

Generating your own power as a homeowner means that you will be using less power from the electricity provider. This means lower monthly electric bills. Additionally, through the Net Metering Program, you can also sell your unused electricity that you have generated. Most homeowners with Solaric sell their excess power to the utility company. In doing this, the homeowner becomes a producer AND a consumer (this is the ultimate secret to reducing, if not eliminating, those power bills).

  • Increased home value

Solaric homes have higher property values. As more people are educated on solar, the demand for solar increases exponentially. A home that produces power and has its own solar power system has increased home value. Even a standard 5-kilowatt Solaric PV system means that there is added resale value to your house.

“I didn’t realize that my investment in Solaric would be so rewarding!” exclaimed Lito Mercado, while pointing to the signature sunlight switch logo of Solaric.

The Future is Bright: Top Three Design and Construction Trends for 2019

The Future is Bright: Top Three Design and Construction Trends for 2019

Powering spaces with sunlight

Solaric rooftop project

In a world that’s getting darker due to climate change and calamities brought about by dwindling natural resources, people are seeking for the light at the end of the global warming tunnel. Some of them are turning to installing solar systems; even the Philippines, have caught on and started joining this important movement. Who would have thought that people can just to look up at the sun for answers? Yes, the future is indeed green and bright.

With the ongoing developments in technology, we are now learning how to harness the gifts of Mother Nature to make daily life easy. Such gifts include safe, clean, and renewable energy sources like water, wind, and the sun. Ever since the discovery of the photovoltaic effect by Edmond Becquerel in 1839, man began to utilize the Sun’s heat to power machines and light up infrastructures. Over time, we’ve discovered the true power of the sun – that is a much better alternative energy source compared to fossil fuels because it’s cleaner and requires minimal maintenance.

This big ball of energy will continue to be a necessity in our lives until the end of time. And there’s no better time to introduce and develop more sustainable energy sources, environmentally-friendly materials, and energy efficient electrical equipment, than now. Below are five design and construction trends for a greener and brighter 2019.

TREND # 1: CLEAN AND RENEWABLE

Most countries in the world still rely on traditional power sources like coal, oil, and natural gases. These resources are finite and will dwindle over the next few years, not to mention the impracticality of it all since acquiring these resources demand so much from the environment. Renewable resources, meanwhile, can be procured easily, and energy production is safer and cleaner. Australia also launched a plan for its public housing pool, which involved the installation of solar panels and batteries in 50,000 homes within four years. The trend is now to harness power from renewable energy sources.

TREND #2: COST EFFICIENCY

Solaric has brought solar power to mainstream. With solar now taking the lead and making the trend, the power of turning on the sun is in the limelight like never before. Clean energy and solar power advocates emphasize that the reduction in power bills or electric bills actually make the investment wise and sound. With the rates of solar systems at an all-time low, homeowners are now making that household switch to solar, along with establishments such as schools, factories, malls, farms, and more. What makes the solar switch even better is the fact that homeowners can benefit from the net metering program, wherein they are credited for their excess power. With solar power as the cheapest source of renewable energy, then it only makes sense to harness this sunshine and turn on the sun – especially with today’s low-cost solar panels and affordable solar power for homes. The investment is a win-win, for homeowners and entrepreneurs alike.

TREND #3: PASSIVE SOLAR HOMES

TREND #3: PASSIVE SOLAR HOMES

A warmer future calls for energy efficient houses. Passive solar homes collect heat as the sun shines through roofs and windows and retains it in materials that store heat, known as thermal mass. The share of the home’s heating load that the passive solar design can meet is called the passive solar fraction, and depends on the area of glazing and the amount of thermal mass. The ideal ratio of thermal mass to glazing varies by climate. Well-designed passive solar homes also provide daylight all year and comfort during the colder seasons through the use of nighttime ventilation.

Ultra-efficient homes

Ultra-efficient homes also combine state-of-the-art energy-efficient construction, appliances, and lighting with commercially available renewable energy systems, such as solar roofs, electricity, and water heating. By taking advantage of the climate and site conditions, architects and designers can incorporate passive solar heating and cooling and energy-efficient strategies to design and construction. The intent is to reduce home and business energy use as cost-effectively as possible.

For instance, a solar roof like Solaric’s PV roof is designed to reflect sunlight and absorb less heat than a standard roof. These rooftops reduce energy bills, improve indoor comfort, and may extend the service life of the roof. These roofs usually have special reflective pigments or are white to reflect sunlight. A light-colored roof absorbs less than 50 percent of the solar energy, which reduces a roof’s temperature. In contrast, dark roofs absorb 90 percent of the solar energy. On the other hand, green roofs are perfect for urban buildings with flat or shallow-pit roofs. Green roofs include anything from basic plant cover to a working garden.

The Future Will Continue Shining

The technology and understanding of clean and green energy will continue to develop as renewable technology becomes more viable and attractive for homes and buildings. The routes to energy, particularly through renewable means, will diversify and will receive a far greater level of attention from the thinking consumer, and applies to all design and construction trends.

SOLARIC: THE KING OF ROOFTOP SOLAR

SOLARIC: THE KING OF ROOFTOP SOLAR

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
November 15, 2018

It’s 2018, and Solaric rules the rooftops.

Climbing up to the top

Climbing up to the top

Solaric is unlike any other company in the ever-growing solar industry of the nation. Solaric delivers cost effective power through clean, safe, and renewable energy. The solar options—such as the solar system in the Philippines—being offered are economically sensible and environmentally sound.

They deliver sustainable energy systems nationwide, available to every homeowner, business, school, non-profit, government, and non-government organizations in the country. Solaric has installed thousands of panels in thousands of homes, factories, buildings, warehouses, military sites, and commercial and industrial sites all over the Philippines.

Solaric has taken the lead in large scale commercial and residential installations, as well as solar equipment sales. No other solar entity can keep up with their pace, and installation rate accelerates each year, leaving rivals scratching their heads and wondering why they can’t seem to keep up.

It all started with Yolanda

In November 2013, one of the strongest tropical cyclones ever recorded in world history rocked the Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) was referred to as the country’s deadliest typhoon, being the strongest storm recorded at landfall and the strongest typhoon ever recorded in terms of one-minute sustained wind speed.

Yolanda devastated most of Surigao, Eastern Samar, and Tacloban City, bringing their inhabitants to their knees. By heart, Solaric was called to duty when catastrophe struck.

All existing inventory was reallocated to relief efforts. There were absolutely no expectations of getting paid. In Tacloban and Malapascua, Solaric embarked on a mission to energize schools, churches, homes, and relief centers where there was no grid, no diesel, no funds, and no government support.

Solaric delivered power in the worst possible operating conditions when others would not, or could not. Why? Because the truth about Solaric is that they are passionate about turning on the sun and making a difference in people’s lives. This volunteer effort gave birth to a ripple effect that became the solar trend.

Untold glorious secrets

Untold glorious secrets

What distinguishes Solaric? It is actually an interesting combination of several major elements.

Quality & Reliability

Solaric guarantees solid solar systems in the Philippines; they fastidiously protects their reputation with engineering excellence. They take pride in declaring their systems as reliable as the sun, and take great efforts in providing their clients with continuity of service. On top of that, they offer “no-nonsense” warranties.

They examine the clients’ energy usage, identify cost-cutting opportunities, and provide tailor-made solutions that are designed to address the specific needs of each and every client.

Value for Money

Solaric guarantees systems that are affordable and cost effective. With reputable industry partners, Solaric extends the best possible prices, warranty, and after-sales service.

Solaric offers the best value for cost. They install solar that will maximize your value. Solaric offers its clients only the best products at the best possible price. Their systems result in significant cost savings and bill reductions. Their main goal is to reduce your power bill by using proven PV technology.

Pioneer of Net Metering

Solaric has the most successful track record in the implementation of Meralco’s Net Metering Program, and they are the pioneers of the “Peak / Off-Peak + Net Metering.”

Solaric was the first to obtain the ERC’s “COC” in the Meralco Franchise area, and they have installed the first utility recognized grid tie solar installations in many cities throughout the archipelago.

They Walk the Talk

The Solaric headquarters is completely off grid. It was built from 100% recycled materials. It operates primarily on solar power, and has a rainwater and aircon water collection system.

Team Excellence

Solaric is composed of the most experienced clean energy project management and installation teams in the country. Solaric engineers serve clients all over the Philippines.

Their people are creative and engaged – everyone goes the extra mile (or extra watt). A closer look takes us to the core of their company culture, which is really about the constant pursuit for excellence.

“One of the most important lessons that we’ve learned in the last five years is about setting the bar. What we really did was show you how to raise that bar, because mediocre is never acceptable. So now you have that extraordinary Solaric DNA inside of you. That is how we’ve reached such spectacular levels of success. And that is how we keep thinking about bigger, better, brighter. So take that insane momentum, and continue to fuel it, until your contagious passion for excellence has infected each and every single person you interact with. There will be mistakes and challenges. But we have to learn from these and rise up, because that is exactly how we will keep our legendary status,” wrote Solaric Vice President Jade De Guzman, in her mid-year email to the employees.

Solaric is transforming the nation. Solaric is helping Filipinos usher in the era of solar energy and sustainable living. This is how and why Solaric has become king.

When surveying people in the renewable energy industry at a recent WiRA event, Ms. Airine Kaufmann commented: “When you’re talking about solar in the Philippines, the first name for a reliable EPC that comes to mind is really Solaric, whether it’s for grid tied solutions or micro and mini grids” said Airine Kaufmann, a senior analyst at Kaufmann Renewables. “I suppose that is their advantage after years of turning on that sun!”

MANONG AND THE GIFT OF POWER

MANONG AND THE GIFT OF POWER

SOLARIC LIGHTS UP A SARI SARI STORE

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
November 10, 2018

Flashback

Solaric has been busy for the last 5 years installing rooftop solar systems all over the Philippines – from large industrial steel plants, to cold storage facilities, to factories and warehouses and buildings, to thousands of homes and businesses in Asia. The very simple story of Manong Rodel was one of the more memorable installations.

Throwback 2014

Situated across the street from the Solaric stock house on J.P. Rizal in Makati City is a small sari-sari store, owned by Manong Rodel. Three years ago, the store had no electric power and no connection to the utility provider, because he could not get a certificate of electrical inspection. Manong Rodel’s work-around to the problem was to use a kerosene lamp for light and a car battery for power. When the car battery needed to be charged, Manong would walk four blocks away just to charge the battery at Php60 per charge. The power would last them for five days of power. Manong Rodel and his wife had been living there since 2006. They were a nice, honest, and hardworking couple. “Ang tagal na namin dito,” said Manong Rodel’s wife, “kahit minsan, hindi kami nagka-ilaw dito. Talagang gasera lang.”

What the Solaric Founders did

What the Solaric Founders did

Manong Rodel recalled how the Founders of Solaric had reached out to help him. “Noong nakita po ni Boss Mike at Mam Jade, binigyan muna kaming chargeable solar. Nung bumalik sila galling Tacloban, pinakabitan kami ng solar panel. Tuloy tuloy na po yung power namin, walang palto yon.”

“I go 1,200 kilometers to go to Tacloban to power schools. Yet right in front of me was a hardworking, nice, and honest couple and yet, they had no power,” said Solaric President Mike De Guzman. “And that’s our expertise: to bring power anywhere.”

Solaric turned on the sun for Manong

So the Solaric team went to work and installed a solar panel on the roof of Manong Rodel’s sari sari store. Finally, after eight years in the darkness, Manong now had power for his lights, electric fans, radio, and other appliances.

“Buti nalang may pusong ginto si Boss Mike. Ngayon lang kami nagka-ilaw,” Manong Rodel added, as his eyes filled with tears of joy.

And then there was a typhoon

Typhoon Glenda (otherwise known as Typhoon Rammasun) was one of the only two Category 5 super typhoons recorded in the South China Sea, and was the first typhoon to directly impact the Philippines in 2014. Typhoon Glenda came and knocked out power in the entire city of Makati in July 2014. For a few days, there was a city black out and no one had electric power. Except one small sari-sari store owned by Manong Rodel.

We would like to share a short solar story on giving and receiving. It has been a very busy 3 years putting Solaric in many places across the Philippines. From Large industrial steel plants, cold storage facilities, hundreds of homes and businesses. One of our more memorable installations is still Manong's Sari Sari store. It was an installation we did because we felt we had to something. On times of need, manong always offered me parking, a rare luxury in Makati but have not asked anything in return. One day I noticed Manong carrying a heavy 20kg battery so he can run his light bulb, he carries it over 400 meters to get it charged for 40 pesos and it runs his lights for about 4 days before conking out. You see Manong house is not a formal house, he has no meter and honorable enough not to do the "jumper". His only option for power is kerosene lamp or 12v battery with bulb that needs constant carrying and charging. As a Solar systems integrator, this was an easy energy problem to fix and subconsciously irritated us as it was a solvable energy problem on front of our store. We took care of that by putting in a spare solar panel we had around and a simple offgrid setup. We valued Manong's generosity by giving us parking and rewarded him with the gift of power. Merry Christmas to our customers and our FB fans. We look forward in serving 2017 and beyond. From Mike and the Solaric Family.www.solaric.com.ph

BREAKING NEWS: SOLARIC HITS 5K TODAY

BREAKING NEWS: SOLARIC HITS 5K TODAY

SDS IS CHANGING THE GAME

Introducing the Solaric Digital Squad, otherwise known as the SDS. Solaric has finally gained momentum in generating creative and different Facebook content. SDS gathered its resources and started releasing homegrown productions and content, distinguishing itself from the usual hype and buzz of the normal corporate peeps.

Check this familiar tune out, click here!

CHECK OUT THE ILLEST LIGHT

When the sweltering heat of the Philippines triggers the solar beasts, the result is an original rap song that blows the OGs out of the water. Solaric employees stepped out of their usual comfort zones and released a rap battle about solar energy in the Philippines versus electric power. What made it extraordinary was the fact that they did everything from scratch: lyrics, rap, performance, video shoot, editing. Kudos to a workforce that can work hard and have fun at the same time!

Solaric will never bill you to submission; learn more of this here.

IRON CHEF FRIDAYS

Even the Solaric HR Team switched gears. They dubbed every Friday an Iron Chef cook-off, where the employees group themselves and cook up gourmet meals so delicious that even Bourdain wants to turn over. And, there’s even icing on the cake: cash prize to Solaric’s Iron Chef!

EVEN THE SUN HAS A RIPPLE EFFECT

Aside from the installers being on the go fulfilling those rooftop solar orders, other Solaric personnel is busy attending to matters of the heart – like lighting up a city after a devastating typhoon or helping out the sari-sari store owner across the street. In the past five years, Solaric has paid it forward by doing pro-bono work and subsidizing off-grid solar projects in remote areas with no grid. Recently, their charitable project was grid tie solar for an orphanage, to lower their monthly recurring costs (such as electricity). With solar, the orphanage can now turn on the aircon for the kids with special health needs.

5K MILESTONE

Solar101 participants in last month’s class

Solar 101 Sep 2018

When Solaric was born half a decade ago, people didn’t really know much about solar energy or understand the technical stuff behind solar panels. Filipinos needed to learn about their options. So Solaric stepped in and trained them on solar power and solar panel systems through monthly SOLAR101 and SOLAR202 seminar courses. Today, Solaric reached a milestone and hit the 5,000 mark – which is the exact number of people that Solaric has officially trained on solar.

THINK WIN-WIN

That’s a record, because although our sun has been shining for 4.5 billion years, the average person has no idea about its magnificent power, or even how it is the cleanest, most sustainable, and most renewable resource in the world. Now, more people are aware of the fact that solar power can run their air conditioners, heaters, electric stoves, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, offices, factories, warehouses, farms, and more. Now, they know that if they use solar instead of fossil fuels, they can help save the environment. And even better, it’s economical and cost-effective, because they can lower their power bills and profit from the investment!

ONE ROOF AT A TIME

ONE ROOF AT A TIME

SOLARIC: THE LEADER IN RESIDENTIAL ROOFTOP SOLAR

REGINA ROME
Solar Digital Squad
Manila, Philippines
October 24, 2018

Total of 1,921

Solaric is always looking out for the interests of our nation. They install solar panels on roofs practically every day. They also teach others how to install a solar panel at home, through the popular Solar101 and Solar202 courses conducted by Solaric on one whole weekend each month. Additionally, the Founders of Solaric are constantly called on as key resource persons whenever clean and renewable energy is the topic of discussion – be it a corporate, government, school, or non-profit organization setting. As of September 10, 2018, there are 1,921 ERC recognized privately owned Net Metered solar installations nationwide. This is how many rooftops sell their excess power to the grid, via the Net Metering Program of Meralco, other distribution utilities, and electric cooperatives.

The bigger picture

That is an equivalent of 15.21 MegaWatt peak of privately installed solar panels. To give a perspective for the non-energy industry people, a barrel of crude oil is $88 a barrel. It contains 1,700 kWh of energy potential. The 15.21 MW of solar panel capacity from these 1,921 homes and businesses SAVE our country the need of importing 14,900 barrels of oil a year, or 367 thousand barrels of oil in its 25-year economic life. If you put those oil barrels along a straight line, it is longer than EDSA and truly an exercise of people power (no political meaning intended).

Why do Filipinos install solar?

Why do Filipinos install solar?

It’s simple and straightforward: they want to SAVE MONEY. For most people, it’s about savings. Installing a solar power system is a minimal investment. It costs nothing to power a solar panel, because the sun is free. The return on investment is less than 5 years, for a system that lasts 25 years. It is a sensible and win-win business decision. For other people, they want to save the environment, because one kW of solar is equivalent to one barrel of oil a year. To put things in perspective, 2,000 solar installations is equivalent to a boat load of coal.

Solaric and Net Metering

Solaric takes great pride in participating in the Net Metering Program. It is a seed that was planted by government policy, and further nurtured by utilities, solar installers, homeowners, business owners and local government units to make a reality. It is something that various entities have been working and collaborating on every day for the last five years.

The first house on net metering

Solaric first started net metering with its Founder’s home in 2013. It was the first house to sell solar power back to the grid, with Peak Off Peak (POP) Net Meter Serial Number #00001. Solaric clients fell in love with the fact that batteries were no longer needed, because surplus energy can now be traded for “credits”. This was a nationwide win that was actually one of the rewards of the renewable energy law.

Game plan

Game plan

Solaric still has a lot of work to do. If the Philippines does its part to reverse climate change, we need to install at least 300 MegaWatts a year of solar rooftop,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corporation.

The vision is promising in as much as it is inspiring. The solar revolution is just getting started. It is, in fact, true: 1,921 installations is just the very beginning.

 Who is Tita Lourdes?

Who is Tita Lourdes?

In a private, gated, and exclusive subdivision, situated within the first-class highly urbanized city of Las Piñas, is the modest 500 square meter house and lot property of Tita Lourdes. The bungalow has three bedrooms and contains the typical household appliances of a Filipino family: air conditioning units, big refrigerator, washing machine, and dryer, among others.

Before talking about how solar systems in the Philippines, let’s rewind to 2014, when Tita Lourdes and her husband were consumed and infuriated by the power interruptions and sky high electric bills. The power bill was alarming, running to approximately P15,000 each month. They decided it was time to make some drastic changes. The solution: to indulge in some bill saving measures.

Thinking about solar

Solar energy has taken the lead in providing renewable energy to countries all over the planet. In the Philippines, it has become the cleanest, safest, and most financially sensible option to reduce those monthly electric bills. When Filipinos contemplate on buying rooftop solar, they typically have a long list of reasons and reflections. Some want to save money. Some want to profit. Some want to keep up with the pace of technology. Some are simply concerned about the environment and the world. But the number one reason that convinces a Filipino to go solar is the ultimate end result: the #ZeroBill.

What the #ZeroBill is all about

The #ZeroBill is simple: it means free electricity. Everyone indulges in anything that is free. Who doesn’t want free power? Imagine relaxing in the comforting, cool atmosphere of an air conditioned room, especially in the midst of the tormenting daytime Philippines heat. With a solar power system in place, there is now an opportunity for every homeowner to be a consumer and a producer of power at the same time. How is this possible? Homeowners get paid for providing clean solar power to the grid. You don’t just use the power, you produce it too. This simply means that you enjoy the benefits and luxury of free power.

Tita Lourdes decided to go big

Tita Lourdes decided to go big

Tita Lourdes decided that she wanted a large solar power system because it made more sense financially and environmentally. Not only would it increase her property value, it would also be her way of contributing to a cleaner world to live in. She wanted a zero bill – guaranteed. Tita Lourdes approached Solaric, the leader in residential rooftop solar, and asked them to install enough rooftop solar that would give her that much coveted #ZeroBill.

Solaric and the #ZeroBill

Solaric conducted a site inspection of her house and rooftop, taking into consideration the rooftop space, sun exposure, and other factors. The Solaric team explained to Tita Lourdes that in order to have a zero bill, the power that her system produces should be more than the power that her household consumes. This then means that the excess power from her system can be exported to the grid, which the power company now buys back. This will offset the cost of grid supply charges. This was the essence of the #ZeroBill.

Breaking it down in simple terms

It is pretty straightforward and simple. Put plenty of solar panels on your roof and generate enough power. Then, export this power to the electric company through the Net Metering Program. In doing this, you get paid for the electricity that you will export. The #ZeroBill phenomenon is actually a benefit from being a consumer and provider.

In pursuit of eternal happiness

Tita Lourdes spent P500,000 on 22 panels. We revisited her ten months later and there it was, a stack of zero bills. We compared her electric bills from previous years, which reflected amounts ranging from between P10,000 to P15,000. Now all her new bills were a flat P0.00.

“The money I saved? I used it for traveling, my grandchildren’s education, and pampering myself,” exclaimed Tita Lourdes, as she held a stack of zero bills in her hand and bubbled with uncontrollable laughter.

When asked if she would recommend Solaric, Tita Lourdes leaned forward with a grin and said, “Absolutely! It’s a great company. They have great staff, people who know what they’re doing. They’re honest and I have no problem contacting them at any time! Great service too. Definitely worth the investment!”
