SOLAR EXPERTS TELL THE HOMEOWNERS AND ENTREPRENEURS HOW TO MAXIMIZE THEIR RENEWABLE INVESTMENT

Solar energy is one of the most efficient and sustainable sources of energy. A solar panel system is commonly made up of fixed and non-motor parts, which is why it is important to ensure that your system is performing efficiently and effectively – and that you are maximizing your investment in renewables.

SELECT THE MOST OPTIMAL ORIENTATION

Solar panels on top of a house with a small rooftop

If you are planning to install a solar panel system, it is highly advisable to avoid placing your solar panels on roof areas with shading. It is recommended that you select a solar panel company or installer that is reputable with many years of experience. Engineers should visit the site and check your roof before deciding on the best available orientation for your roof. Experts in the industry know best when recommending the system size, placement, tilt, orientation, and more. All of these are planned well beforehand and upon consultation with various professionals (engineers, electricians, solar design experts).

INVEST IN QUALITY EQUIPMENT

A line of solar panels on a roof

As the rooftop solar leader in the Philippines, Solaric always suggests various options to clients.

“We believe that we should empower our clients in making a wise investment. They should consider affordability without sacrificing quality and reliability. There is absolutely no “one size fits all” when it comes to solar. There is no small medium large. Every house or building or warehouse or facility is different. Every site survey is different. Every solution we offer our clients is unique and is customized specifically to address their roof, their consumption, their needs,” explains Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

For panels, efficiency is defined as how well a solar module converts the sun’s energy into electricity within a certain area. Higher efficiency comes with a more expensive price tag. For houses or buildings with limited roof space, panels with greater peak efficiency are highly advised compared to establishments with big and ample roof space.

CLEAN YOUR SOLAR PANELS

A dirty and dusty solar panel

Solar panels are not immune to dust, dirt, and tiny specs of debris. Just like any product, if not cleaned properly, the less useful it becomes. Dust may accumulate over time or due to natural phenomena such as the recent eruption of the Taal Volcano. It is important that you visually inspect your panels from time to time to avoid dust accumulation that may result in lesser efficiency. Solar panels do not require much maintenance. Cleaning it at least once a year with mild soap and running water will usually do the trick. It is best to call in the rooftop solar experts to do the annual maintenance cleaning because the cleaning service can come with a routine inspection of the solar equipment and performance analysis of the system. Regular maintenance will ensure that your solar panel system is performing optimally and your investment will continue to be profitable.

Ask and consult your trusted solar panel provider on how you can maximize efficiently your system.

ROOFTOP SOLAR PANEL CLEANING

A man wiping a rooftop solar panel clean

Should You Clean Your Solar Panels?

Since rooftop solar panels get dirty because they are outside and exposed to endless environmental factors all day every day, then they have to be cleaned. There may be times when you wonder: should you clean your solar panels? The correct answer is: yes, if necessary.

Let’s go over various factors to consider before you clean your solar panels – or have them cleaned. These include solar panel cleaning method, weather, frequency of maintenance, cost, and safety precautions.

SOLAR PANEL CLEANING METHOD

A professional brushing dust off of a solar panel

There are a few correct ways to clean your solar panels because there are many different types and kinds of solar panels and they are all different. If you have a Solaric system, then you just have to call us and we will take care of your solar panel cleaning.

SAFETY FIRST

Dirty solar panels versus clean

Rooftops are high off the ground, so it is best to have the professional solar installers or roof experts do everything that is roof-related, for safety purposes. Ensure that the personnel comes wearing complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

WEATHER VARIATIONS

A professional cleaning rooftop solar panels

Solar energy output is indeed affected by various factors, and this includes variations in weather and climate. On a clear, bright, sunny day in the Philippines, the system’s power graph forms a bell curve. Highest energy production typically happens around noon, when the sun is brightest. These are the times when the solar panels operate most efficiently. On the other hand, during cloudy days, solar panels still do work – since the rays of the sun still find their way to shine through the clouds and the rain. However, since sunlight is limited, then it follows that energy production is limited as well. The actual amount of electricity generated during such days is dependent on the density of cloud coverage. Thus, the solar panel system’s production is not as consistent and considerably reduced during cloudy days and rainy days. Rain can add dirt to the panels but the dirt is very minimal. The rain mostly does the work of rinsing and cleaning your solar panels. When it rains, you benefit from the water falling from the sky because it is doing the work for you.

WHEN CAN YOU DO IT YOURSELF?

Before and after comparison of dirty and clean solar panels

You can clean your solar panels yourself in manageable situations, such as when the dirt or debris is mild and you can easily use a hose to clean the panels.

However, in unmanageable weather conditions, you are recommended to contact panel cleaning experts or your solar installers, and have them take care of the cleaning for you.

Otherwise, Solaric solar installers conduct annual cleaning and maintenance service for our clients’ solar panels.

TAAL VOLCANO ASH ON YOUR SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels completely covered in volcanic ash

What Should You Do and How Should You Do It?

A few days into 2020 and we were struck by a tragedy when the Taal Volcano erupted on the afternoon of January 12, ending its 43 years of silence. The eruption caused ashfall in Batangas and nearby provinces like Cavite and Laguna, and even reaching as far as Metro Manila. Toxic ash with a foul odor and hazardous particulate matter instantly transformed the land into a vast color of gloomy gray.

What happens to my system?

Solar panels with volcanic ash on it

When solar panels are covered with thick layers of ash, the performance of the solar panel system decreases. The power loss increases with the increase in the quantity of ash on the PV system. In some instances, it can be a complete drop of output if the ashen panels have already hardened and become “espasol”.

What do I do?

A man sweeping volcanic ash off of solar panels

Anyone can clean their own panels as long as safety practices are observed. Volcanic ash can be dangerous as its particles are very hard and tiny with jagged edges. It can cause eye, nose, and lung irritation. It can also cause breathing problems. Thick layers of ash can accumulate and harden, causing roofs to collapse over time and clogging your house’s gutters. This is why you should observe extreme caution and be careful of its residue.

How do I do it?

Rooftop solar panels with volcanic ash

When cleaning a roof with ash, it’s important to do so safely and have a lifeline or rope, a good set of rubber shoes, a dust mask (N95 or equivalent), helmet, and goggles. In other words, proper and complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Other materials needed are a broom/walis, a walis tambo, a scooper or trowel, trash bags, a hose, and running water. A power washer could be used but set on the broadest spray option to do the job effectively and not overly abrade the panels.

5 Steps in Cleaning the Ash Off Your Solar Panels

A man cleaning volcanic ash off of solar panels

  1. Take out as much debris as possible from the solar panels and roof – carefully. Make sure to clean out the gutter. You can plug the gutter hole with an old, wet t-shirt or rag to avoid ash from building up in the pipes.
  2. Brush out the debris carefully with a broom or soft-bristled brush.
  3. After most of the ash has been swept and removed from the roof, rinse down the remaining debris.
  4. The panels can then be washed and cleaned with a squeegee or soft brush. Some dishwashing liquid soap can be used, with a tablespoon of baking soda, mixed in a bucket of water. The baking soda will help neutralize the acidity of the ash. This mixture can be used as the final soap wash.
  5. Rinse. Do not dry wipe the panels with visible dust because it will make the cloth act like sandpaper.

Do note that the roof will be slicker than normal when ash is mixed with water/soapy water.

To our valued clients

You may contact 0915.269.5403 or 7504.0092 to request for Solar Panel Ash Cleaning. We strongly recommend that you have your roofs cleaned to ensure that your roof gutters are debris-free and ash-free before the Solaric team cleans the solar panels.

Let us continue to pray for the safety of all evacuated families near, around, and within the vicinity of Taal. Stay safe Philippines!

HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS ARE NEEDED TO RUN A HOUSE?

The roof of a house with solar panels overlooking its village

The decision to put solar on the rooftop

Top view of a dark roof of a house with solar panels

Some people take months to decide. Some people take years. It is, after all, a major decision when you have to finally consider your previously bare roof to be adorned with a string of blue or black solar panels. This is particularly true if you are especially concerned with the aesthetics of your home or your roof and its visibility from the road. It is, however, a matter of perspective. Some people view a bare roof as beautiful. Others, however, regard a solarized roof as the epitome of beauty. To each his own.

What is the essence of its power?

A sun shining on a field

Every panel can generate a certain number of watts per hour from the rays of the sun. Every day, here in the Philippines, we average at least 4.5 hours of sunshine. With one 400-watt solar panel, we can harvest at least 1.8 kW of power each day. Imagine 10 panels. Imagine 50 panels. What does this translate to? It means that during the day, our household appliances can be directly powered by electricity generated by these solar panels, using energy harvested from the sun. It means that our roof, in the past decades, was just an adorning structure that sheltered us from heat and rain. Now, we have learned to make our rooftops more beneficial for us, by converting it into a quiet small power plant for a few hours each day, whenever the sun is out. This translates to savings each day, each month. In other words, installing an ideal sized rooftop solar system for your home will result in a 30% to 70% reduction in your monthly electric bill.

But wait, there’s more

Extreme top shot of a house with solar panels

Why is the monthly electric bill reduction a wide range between 30% to 70%? There are several factors that come into play: solar panel system size, type and brand of panels, roof tilt or angle, sun exposure, and net metering if the system is a grid-tie system, among other factors. With net metering, all excess power harvested during the day is exported to the grid in exchange for credits. This results in a lower monthly bill.

“2019 prices are already cheaper. Let’s see what 2020 will bring. At the moment, the typical 5.4 kWp grid-tie solar system costs about P380,000 – using polycrystalline panels. At this rate, going solar is now affordable. Some people think it’s too big a commitment, but I think it’s our perspective that needs to change. Instead of viewing it as an expense, maybe we need to view it as an investment,” emphasizes Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

IS SOLAR FOR A LIFETIME?

A repair man walking in between solar panels

If you are thinking of having solar on your roof,

probably one of the questions you are asking is:

would it last for a lifetime?

Lifespan and Quality

Close up of a solar panel on a roof

Solar panels have a maximum lifespan of 25 years output guarantee and the maximum lifespan of Inverters is 12 years. Not all panels are the same so it is important to remember that the brand will also play a factor in terms of lifespan. High-quality panels are expected to perform beyond 25 years while the use of low-quality equipment and materials can result in system under-performance and frequent failures.

Here in Solaric, we offer “no-nonsense” warranties, which means we honor our warranties locally and even have service units to swap out with, so you have very minimal downtime should something ever go wrong. We offer a 10-year to 25-year manufacturer’s warranty for solar panels (depending on the brand) and a 5-year warranty for inverters. We only cater globally recognized, top quality Tier 1 equipment and brands.

What happens to my panels after 25 years?

Close up of a solar panel

Once your solar system reaches 25 years, it does not necessarily mean that it’s dead and not functional. Your system would still work adequately but bear in mind that panels may have degraded over time thus resulting in a 10 to 20% reduction in efficiency and harvest. Solar panels will continue to work as long as they are not physically damaged through major external forces.

How can I extend the life of my system?

Close up of a solar panel on a roof

Since Grid-Tie System has no battery, just the regular maintenance (cleaning) of solar panels is highly recommended. It is also best to avoid physical damages like avoiding growing trees and bushes that, once blown by the wind, may create scratches on your panels. The more surface damages your panels have, the greater the performance degradation. Annual maintenance and routine assessment by a solar company expert will be sufficient in ensuring the optimal performance of your solar panel system.

UPGRADING YOUR HOME WITH SOLAR

UPGRADING YOUR HOME WITH SOLAR

Good for the planet, good for the market

Good for the planet, good for the market

In essence, solar panels are good for the environment and the planet. But what consumers really want to know is, are they good for the market value of the property? Studies reveal that the answer is: yes. Absolutely. Not only will the investment in the solar panel system pay off within an average of five years; the homeowner will profit from the solar system in the next 20 years that follow. How’s that for impact on property value?

The truth is that going solar is an upgrade

The truth is that going solar is an upgrade

Installing solar does not only translate into savings and helping protect the environment – you also get to increase your home and property value. Solar panels don’t just look aesthetically pleasing on your roof; they should be seen as upgrades, in the same way, you improve the interior or exterior of your home. As more people are being educated about solar, the demand for solar homes continues to rise and the market value of solar properties continues to increase.

Did you know that solar homes sell at a premium?

Did you know that solar homes sell at a premium?

The overall return of investment in a solar system not only means great financial returns. It is a fact that buying a solar energy system will increase your home’s value. Yet since solar panels are now viewed as upgrades, in the same way as a renovated kitchen or upgraded attic, buyers are now paying a premium for the home with a solar system. Energy-efficient features and solarized homes sell faster than homes that consume more energy.

BEWARE OF FLY-BY-NIGHT SOLAR INSTALLERS

BEWARE OF FLY-BY-NIGHT SOLAR INSTALLERS

Be aware

It is crucial to be able to recognize a fly-by-night solar company before hiring them to install solar. Be aware that there are many companies out there with one overall purpose: to scam you. These kinds of companies will make promises that they do not intend to keep, and they will take your money and disappear.

What are the signs?

What are the signs?

To be able to recognize a fly-by-night company or a scam, you have to be able to recognize the signs of such companies or organizations:

  • They make promises that seem illogical, impractical, or out of this world
  • They charge much lower prices than competitors
  • They have very few client testimonials available with the media
  • They ignore you after you have paid for services
  • They do not have a physical office address
  • They do not have corporate bank accounts and accept cash only

There are many other signs that indicate the illegitimate or scam nature of a company. It is best to always do your due diligence when engaging a company for its services.

In the Philippines

In the Philippines, such solar scammers are known as “guerilla installers” of solar panels. The questionable quality of the panels is the ultimate problem, and the public has been warned by the Department of Energy about engaging with such suppliers.

“Fake panels or improperly installed panels are serious hazards. They can cause fires and disasters which will result in fatalities. We have to learn to take solar seriously. It is about electricity and power and energy. When choosing a solar provider, you have to choose carefully and wisely. Make sure you do your research – reputation, reliability, services, value, testimonials, the works. We have been asked to come in and fix solar messes of other companies, but sometimes it is just too late. Don’t make the same mistake,” warned Solaric President Mike De Guzman.

ROOFTOP SOLAR: SHOULD YOU GET IT?

ROOFTOP SOLAR: SHOULD YOU GET IT?

Does solar make sense?

Does solar make sense?

Homeowners, business owners, and entrepreneurs have varying opinions and technical knowledge of the solar industry. Although most are aware of the advantages of solar, there is little grasp on the market, its long-term effects, and the deciding factors that go behind large capacity solar systems. Hundreds of Fortune 500 companies have gotten on board with renewable energy and adopting low carbon footprint energy sources. With the eco-aware planet of 2019, it is wise to start considering going solar at some point in the near future – not just as a strategic financial decision but also to play your role in protecting the environment.

Apple, Microsoft, Netflix

Apple, Microsoft, Netflix

Yes, solar is not just for the big ones. Every household and business should invest and capitalize on solar. Everyone should take advantage of the renewable energy opportunities available now in the Philippines. Installing a solar power system is a key decision that guarantees a solid financial return. In the first five years after going solar, you will achieve a return on investment. In the next twenty years that follow, you will profit. There are three main reasons why anyone goes solar: to go green, to save money, and to profit.

As long as you have a roof

As long as you have a roof

Any home or business with a roof can install solar and benefit from this low carbon source of energy: factories, warehouses, office buildings, cold storage facilities, restaurants, car dealerships, BPOs, schools, hospitals, and city halls. Once the home or facility has a solar panel system installed, the homeowner or business can register for Net Metering. Through the net metering program, they can sell their surplus solar energy to the grid (or to the utility company). With the grid-tie solar panel system, it does not need batteries because the system blends utility power with solar power. The system is automatically synchronized. Bill reductions typically average between 30% to 70%, depending on the capacity of the solar power system. Installing a solar power system is a wise, strategic, significant, business decision and investment that provides energy savings for 25 years. In essence, it means free power in the long term.

“Every six square meters of solar panels on the roof can produce about 1,500 to 1,700 kWh of energy each year, which translates to the energy content in a barrel of oil. For those who want to be green, clean, and sustainable, then solar is the way to go,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp.

OFF-GRID SOLAR FOR A REMOTE ISLAND

OFF-GRID SOLAR FOR A REMOTE ISLAND

Remote islands in the Philippines

Remote islands in the Philippines

There are homes and establishments in thousands of islands in the Philippine archipelago that can easily be electrified through off-grid solar power.

In a press release on August 2018, Senator Win Gatchalian emphasized his goal of achieving 100% electrification in rural areas of the Philippines, especially in isolated islands and other remote areas. “We have to think of creative and innovative ideas to power our communities. For example, we have a lot of islands and remote areas that cannot be reached by electric wires but may be electrified by putting up microgrids and individual home systems, including solar panel systems,” he said.

Solar is king

According to Solaric President Mike De Guzman, “the installation of solar PV power systems can free homes and businesses in these islands from their heavy dependence on diesel gensets. We need to contribute more efforts in the energization of these remote islands.”

Solaric has launched initiatives in a few remote islands, ones that are considered far-flung places and that are hardest to reach.

“Those are, after all, the best candidates for the development of off-grid and hybrid solar projects. Why? Well because these are the very people who will truly enjoy the benefits of efficient and reliable solar power,” said De Guzman.

Training is always part of the advocacy

Training is always part of the advocacy

Solaric Corp., known as the nation’s leader in rooftop solar, is also an advocate of sharing its best practices and knowledge in the industry through its renowned weekend courses: Solar101 and Solar202. In the same spirit, whenever Solaric installs solar in remote, power-starved areas, their personnel conduct vocational training for the masses, to invite the locals to learn about the systems and the technology.

THE FUTURE OF SOLAR: BATTERIES AND STORAGE

What’s new with storage

Power generation and storage this 2019 is zipping into the fast-evolving solar industry. Now that there is a new generation of low carbon energy sources, including solar, hydro, wind, there are many ways to play smart when it comes to consuming power and keeping the environment and planet clean, safe, and sustainable.

Talk about batteries

Talk about batteries

Lead-acid batteries start to degrade after a few years. Now, however, there are batteries that are fully reusable throughout its cycles and that do not degrade, compared to its former counterparts. Additionally, these batteries have a significantly longer lifespan (lead-acid batteries had a 5-year lifespan, lithium batteries have a 10 to 15-year lifespan). This 2019, battery technology and energy storage have become more cost-effective.

The latest about batteries

Lithium batteries are part of Solaric’s technological toolbox as we have clients who ask for their capabilities. Batteries are needed if you need your solar set up to run during power outages. Batteries serve as the buffer when the sun is not sufficient and loads have to be supplied with sustained energy. Nowadays, batteries are becoming more popular and common in households in exclusive subdivisions in the metro, despite the reliability and stability of utility power. These days, homeowners are building new homes without a diesel generator; instead, they are backing up power with a Mega Solaric UPS.

More Filipinos want storage these days

More Filipinos want storage these days

There are more and more clients today who want and need storage for their solar, because of the reliability of backup power that only batteries can provide. This is particularly a popular demand especially in areas that are power-starved, or in areas that have consistent daily power outages. In such cases, it is best to store power in batteries for consumption when there is no sun or consumption during night time.

At Solaric, we have installed hundreds of setups with batteries for consumers and even fulfilled military contracts around the world with our battery tech. We have placed batteries in various systems, including radar systems and mission-critical communication systems. The Solaric technology team is innovative to a point that is way beyond Tesla power walls. We design custom systems that can run entire islands or radar facilities perpetually with no diesel, oil, or even grid.

Battery-based systems are more complex beasts. They cost about 40% to 70% more than our popular battery-less grid-tie systems. Yes, there is indeed a price for peace – the price of having power in your house after a major disaster – which, in itself, is priceless.
