Should You Clean Your Solar Panels?

Since rooftop solar panels get dirty because they are outside and exposed to endless environmental factors all day every day, then they have to be cleaned. There may be times when you wonder: should you clean your solar panels? The correct answer is: yes, if necessary.

Let’s go over various factors to consider before you clean your solar panels – or have them cleaned. These include solar panel cleaning method, weather, frequency of maintenance, cost, and safety precautions.

SOLAR PANEL CLEANING METHOD

SAFETY FIRST

Rooftops are high off the ground, so it is best to have the professional solar installers or roof experts do everything that is roof-related, for safety purposes. Ensure that the personnel comes wearing complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

WEATHER VARIATIONS

Solar energy output is indeed affected by various factors, and this includes variations in weather and climate. On a clear, bright, sunny day in the Philippines, the system’s power graph forms a bell curve. Highest energy production typically happens around noon, when the sun is brightest. These are the times when the solar panels operate most efficiently. On the other hand, during cloudy days, solar panels still do work – since the rays of the sun still find their way to shine through the clouds and the rain. However, since sunlight is limited, then it follows that energy production is limited as well. The actual amount of electricity generated during such days is dependent on the density of cloud coverage. WHEN CAN YOU DO IT YOURSELF?

What Should You Do and How Should You Do It?

A few days into 2020 and we were struck by a tragedy when the Taal Volcano erupted on the afternoon of January 12, ending its 43 years of silence. The eruption caused ashfall in Batangas and nearby provinces like Cavite and Laguna, and even reaching as far as Metro Manila. Toxic ash with a foul odor and hazardous particulate matter instantly transformed the land into a vast color of gloomy gray.

What happens to my system?

When solar panels are covered with thick layers of ash, the performance of the solar panel system decreases. The power loss increases with the increase in the quantity of ash on the PV system. In some instances, it can be a complete drop of output if the ashen panels have already hardened and become “espasol”.

What do I do?

Anyone can clean their own panels as long as safety practices are observed. Volcanic ash can be dangerous as its particles are very hard and tiny with jagged edges. It can cause eye, nose, and lung irritation. It can also cause breathing problems. Thick layers of ash can accumulate and harden, causing roofs to collapse over time and clogging your house’s gutters. This is why you should observe extreme caution and be careful of its residue.

How do I do it?

When cleaning a roof with ash, it’s important to do so safely and have a lifeline or rope, a good set of rubber shoes, a dust mask (N95 or equivalent), helmet, and goggles. In other words, proper and complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Other materials needed are a broom/walis, a walis tambo, a scooper or trowel, trash bags, a hose, and running water. A power washer could be used but set on the broadest spray option to do the job effectively and not overly abrade the panels.

5 Steps in Cleaning the Ash Off Your Solar Panels

Take out as much debris as possible from the solar panels and roof – carefully. Make sure to clean out the gutter. You can plug the gutter hole with an old, wet t-shirt or rag to avoid ash from building up in the pipes.
Brush out the debris carefully with a broom or soft-bristled brush.
After most of the ash has been swept and removed from the roof, rinse down the remaining debris.
The panels can then be washed and cleaned with a squeegee or soft brush. Some dishwashing liquid soap can be used, with a tablespoon of baking soda, mixed in a bucket of water. The baking soda will help neutralize the acidity of the ash. This mixture can be used as the final soap wash.
Rinse. Do not dry wipe the panels with visible dust because it will make the cloth act like sandpaper.

Do note that the roof will be slicker than normal when ash is mixed with water/soapy water.

HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS ARE NEEDED TO RUN A HOUSE?

The decision to put solar on the rooftop

Some people take months to decide. Some people take years. It is, after all, a major decision when you have to finally consider your previously bare roof to be adorned with a string of blue or black solar panels. This is particularly true if you are especially concerned with the aesthetics of your home or your roof and its visibility from the road. It is, however, a matter of perspective. Some people view a bare roof as beautiful. Others, however, regard a solarized roof as the epitome of beauty. To each his own.

What is the essence of its power?

Every panel can generate a certain number of watts per hour from the rays of the sun. Every day, here in the Philippines, we average at least 4.5 hours of sunshine. With one 400-watt solar panel, we can harvest at least 1.8 kW of power each day. Imagine 10 panels. Imagine 50 panels. What does this translate to? It means that during the day, our household appliances can be directly powered by electricity generated by these solar panels, using energy harvested from the sun. It means that our roof, in the past decades, was just an adorning structure that sheltered us from heat and rain. Now, we have learned to make our rooftops more beneficial for us, by converting it into a quiet small power plant for a few hours each day, whenever the sun is out. This translates to savings each day, each month. In other words, installing an ideal sized rooftop solar system for your home will result in a 30% to 70% reduction in your monthly electric bill.

But wait, there’s more

Why is the monthly electric bill reduction a wide range between 30% to 70%? There are several factors that come into play: solar panel system size, type and brand of panels, roof tilt or angle, sun exposure, and net metering if the system is a grid-tie system, among other factors. With net metering, all excess power harvested during the day is exported to the grid in exchange for credits. This results in a lower monthly bill.

“2019 prices are already cheaper. Let’s see what 2020 will bring. At the moment, the typical 5.4 kWp grid-tie solar system costs about P380,000 – using polycrystalline panels. At this rate, going solar is now affordable. Some people think it’s too big a commitment, but I think it’s our perspective that needs to change. Instead of viewing it as an expense, maybe we need to view it as an investment,” emphasizes Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

Lifespan and Quality

Solar panels have a maximum lifespan of 25 years output guarantee and the maximum lifespan of Inverters is 12 years. Not all panels are the same so it is important to remember that the brand will also play a factor in terms of lifespan. High-quality panels are expected to perform beyond 25 years while the use of low-quality equipment and materials can result in system under-performance and frequent failures.

What happens to my panels after 25 years?

Once your solar system reaches 25 years, it does not necessarily mean that it’s dead and not functional. Your system would still work adequately but bear in mind that panels may have degraded over time thus resulting in a 10 to 20% reduction in efficiency and harvest. Solar panels will continue to work as long as they are not physically damaged through major external forces.

How can I extend the life of my system?

Since Grid-Tie System has no battery, just the regular maintenance (cleaning) of solar panels is highly recommended. It is also best to avoid physical damages like avoiding growing trees and bushes that, once blown by the wind, may create scratches on your panels. The more surface damages your panels have, the greater the performance degradation. It is crucial to be able to recognize a fly-by-night solar company before hiring them to install solar. Be aware that there are many companies out there with one overall purpose: to scam you. These kinds of companies will make promises that they do not intend to keep, and they will take your money and disappear.

What are the signs?

To be able to recognize a fly-by-night company or a scam, you have to be able to recognize the signs of such companies or organizations:

They make promises that seem illogical, impractical, or out of this world
They charge much lower prices than competitors
They have very few client testimonials available with the media
They ignore you after you have paid for services
They do not have a physical office address
They do not have corporate bank accounts and accept cash only

There are many other signs that indicate the illegitimate or scam nature of a company. It is best to always do your due diligence when engaging a company for its services.
