8 Steps to Going Grid Tie Solar

The Renewable Energy (RE) sector in Southeast Asia is booming. Installed capacity is expected to triple this year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia are kicking off the transition to renewables into high gear this 2019.

“Initial records from independent solar companies reveal that 2 Megawatts (MW) were installed in the year 2016, comprising of 473 net metered facilities. In 2017, this increased to 6MW. In 2018, the data reflected a cumulative figure of 19.6MW registered installs under Energy Regulatory Commission,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and President of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

“Developers are constructing solar power plants all over the country, from mini to large scale. We expect them to be completed by 2020,” added De Guzman. “With the Philippines’ fast-growing energy demand, then the country’s power policies are bound to improve and be more pro-consumer, on top of incentives for solar PV development. In Indonesia, overall RE growth seems to be at a standstill because of uncertainty in policies. I’m confident that we will not find ourselves in the same boat.”

 

The solar rise residential

Millions of homes have already gone solar in the Philippines, and more and more homeowners are now considering going solar. A team of engineers needs to visit the site (residence or commercial facility) to evaluate various factors: roof type, roof condition, angle or slope, solar system type, structural foundation, electrical status, wiring, the electric bill, power consumption, daytime appliances, tapping point, and multiple other elements. The engineers will also take measurements.

 

Step Two: Selecting Equipment

After the site survey and assessment, a Site Survey Report will be prepared by the slew of energy professionals. The engineers will then turn over the report to the Sales Team, which will then be responsible for preparing a proposal with several options. The options include various brands and different solar equipment, which the homeowners will need to go over and select which option best suits their needs and goals.

The two primary components of a solar panel system are the solar panels and the inverters. Always consider efficiency, reputation, price, aesthetics, and durability when choosing solar equipment. After finalizing the option best suited for the homeowner, the contract is then signed and a go signal is given to the installation team.

 

Step Four: Permits

There are logistical paperwork and documentation that go behind every solar panel system installation, just as with any major decision. These documents and permits may vary depending on the location or city and may include: Barangay Permit, Barangay Clearance, Permit to Install, Building Permit, etc. The solar company you choose may assist you with securing such permits, and it would be best if you select a solar partner who can offer this as part of their package.

Now that you’ve chosen your panels and inverters, your installation has been scheduled and your equipment is ready. The solar installers and electricians will begin by preparing your roof, then work on the electrical wiring, then install the racking and mounting structure, the panels, and inverters. The timeline for the installation varies, depending on the system size that you selected and the number of solar professionals working on your project.

 

Step Six: Energization

This is considered to be the most exciting time of solar panel system installation: energization. It is the final step of going solar and it is your actual “Go Live” day. The solar team will conduct a final inspection, double-check, and verify everything in accordance with standard electrical codes and solar industry practices.

The process for Net Metering will now come into play, which will be mostly coordination between the homeowner, solar company, city hall, and utility company in facilitating and processing the requirements in order to obtain the approved Net Metering application. Once approved, the meter may be replaced. The grid-tie solar system is now officially interconnected to the grid.

Owning a grid-tie system is low maintenance. The recommended option is to simply have it professionally cleaned and thoroughly checked annually by solar experts.
