PHILIPPINES: A SOLAR GOLDMINE

Solar panels on top of a building in the Philippines

Being a tropical country, the Philippines is blessed to have the sun’s energy all year round. This abundance makes our country the perfect goldmine to harvest this clean, renewable and sustainable energy.

The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 or RA 9513 aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy resources such as solar to achieve energy self-reliance and reduce the country’s dependence on fossil fuels. It also aims to promote the efficient and cost-effective commercial application of renewable energy.

Solar energy in the Philippines

A hand holding a globe

With the worldwide spread of awareness about climate change and search for clean and renewable energy alternatives, one cannot neglect the potential of solar here in the Philippines. Our country sits in the equatorial region where there is a higher amount of the sun’s energy that, when taken advantage of, can reap enormous benefits such as solar power that can be harvested using solar panels.

Why do people go solar?

A shocked couple looking at their electricity bills

The number of homeowners and business owners who opt to use solar energy has exponentially increased. This may be because of various reasons. Based on a recent survey conducted by the Solaric Digital Squad on the clients of Solaric Corp., the top reason why they’ve chosen to go solar was to reduce their utility expenses. The cost of electricity in the Philippines is very high. Additionally, the thin supply of power to the grid results in frequent brownouts during peak summer months. Other reasons cited included reducing their carbon footprint and helping protect the environment.

The ideal setup

A compass facing true south

For a tropical country like the Philippines, it is advisable to face the solar modules in the south. Facing it in the true south will generate the highest yield or harvest and the tilt angle can be between 10 to 40 degrees to match the local settings. Remember that the outcome and results may vary as it is a case to case basis. Installing the same size and system in different locations would still give you different output or yield.

I WANT GUILT-FREE AC!

A hand turning on the air conditioning

IT’S ALMOST SUMMER:

DON’T YOU WANT TO LIVE LIKE A BOSS?

Summer is just around the corner and as the cool breeze fades the warmer temperature comes that makes us switch on that aircon! Admit it or not, a lot of us Filipinos are feeling guilty whenever we use the aircon because of the cost that comes after the comfort and solar might be just the perfect solution for that guilt.

How much solar do I need for my AC?

A man near a fan due to the extreme heat

This is probably one of the most popular questions we encounter with our clients as it is the most in-demand appliance during summer. For a starting budget of Php130,000, we can install a 1.62kWp Grid-Tie System that can easily cover your 1 to 1.5hp aircon along with common Filipino household appliances such as lights, fans, televisions, and refrigerators during the daytime.

The higher the total horsepower of all your air-conditioning units, the larger the solar panel system required to offset your daytime use. For example, a 4hp aircon that runs during the daytime will require a 5.4kWp solar panel system that costs around Php340,000.

Solar is the real deal

A rooftop with solar panels

Solaric CEO and President Mike De Guzman says, “My vision is for every Pinoy to turn on the aircon without hesitation. Anytime – most especially in the midst of the scorching summer heat. The solution is really simple: go solar. That’s what our country needs right now: solutions that work.”

“It’s almost summer. Electricity rates rise. The heat can be unbearable. Who doesn’t want unli-AC? Who doesn’t want guilt-free AC?” asked De Guzman.

Solar panel systems are guaranteed to run for the next 25 years or more. Most panel manufacturers offer a 10-year warranty. In addition, maintenance for solar panel systems is easy and simple, just annual cleaning and routine inspection.

You may also sell excess or surplus energy to the utility through the “Net Metering” program if you want to offset your nighttime usage. Say goodbye to the traditional “tiis-tiis na lang muna” and welcome summer this 2020 in the most comfortable and clean way: with GUILT-FREE AC.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST SOLAR PANELS PROVIDER: IS CHEAPER BETTER OR IS BETTER CHEAPER?

A solar panel provider educating future handlers

When buying a car or a property, you always try to look for the best and highly-efficient product for your needs. The same applies when looking for a good solar provider. Solar does not come cheap and is considered a long-term investment, which is why it is important to look for a reliable and reputable provider.

A Home with Solar Panels: Click here to view a Makati residence with a 36.48 kWp rooftop solar system and is experiencing savings of approximately Php25,000 to Php33,000 each month.

Look and research

Commercial building with rooftop solar panels

Like any investment, it is best to conduct thorough research and study when looking for a potential solar provider. It is recommended to look for someone with guaranteed solar expertise and experience. A solar system is guaranteed to last up to 25 years and more, which is why it is important to look for a reputable solar company that can deliver turnkey solutions and the full potential and promise of your solar panel system. It is also critical to consider the company’s profile: how long they have been in the business and the number and variety of projects installed. The best place to search is online for easy access to reviews and recommendations, and through friends and referrals.

Beware of bogus providers

A criminal scamming people online

Do not be fooled by the easy and lower prices. Cheaper is not necessarily better. Things may come cheaper, but then other factors are at times compromised: quality, warranty, aftercare or maintenance service. It is critical to ensure that you select a solar panel solutions provider that is easy to contact, quick to respond, offers answers and solutions, and can deliver tailor-made solar panel systems that are based on your specific needs.

Quality vs. cost

A building with solar panels on its roof

As a client, you have the right to choose what kind or brand of panels and equipment you want for your system. Your provider might give you initial recommendations. Cheaper equipment and materials may look good upfront but may underperform and compromise your efficiency and return. Look for a solar company that can provide you with Tier 1 brands at reasonable prices. Explore your options. If you do not have a particular brand in mind, consider asking them what will fit your priorities the best. Some panels might be more expensive as they offer longer warranties or more aesthetics. Weigh your options before deciding.

THE BRIGHTER FUTURE OF SOLAR PANELS THIS 2020

Solar panels along the entire rooftop

With the increasing effects and threats of climate change, the interests and demands for renewable energy continue to rise. Solar energy is now much more affordable, with the technology having completely evolved in the past decade. The future of solar will definitely continue to prosper this 2020.

The issue of climate change

Wild bushfires

It cannot be denied that the effects of climate change are hugely felt all throughout the world. At just the turn of the New Year this 2020, we have been plagued by raging bushfires, powerful earthquakes, longer dry spells, and more devastating typhoons. The global population needs to accelerate its efforts in helping the environment and minimizing carbon footprints. There are numerous ways to support this such as no fireworks, no to plastic use, or using reusable cups. One strikingly significant way, however, is to utilize and advocate renewable energy. For 2020, this is precisely the increasing interest and trend. Numerous homeowners and business owners are fast investing in having a clean, cost-efficient, and renewable source of energy – rooftop solar in particular.

Solar vs. the old ways

Solar on the roof of a small building

As the cost of electricity here in the Philippines continues to rise, together with the demand for electricity – especially during summer – rooftop solar is becoming the fastest and most efficient solution to rising costs and climate change dilemmas. Over the course of the summer, there are many expected brownouts or blackouts as our grid supply stoops into yellow and red alerts. Everyone is now exploring solar solutions to lower their electricity bills and contribute, in some way, to protecting the environment. Why solar panels? With solar, you are guaranteed a safe, clean, and sustainable source of energy whenever the sun is out. If you have a hybrid or off-grid solar panel system, then you have power even in the midst of power outages and energy disruptions. Given how solar is reliable, flexible and more feasible in a tropical country like the Philippines, the demand for solar installation will most certainly continue to grow.

Declining prices of Solar & Improved technology

Solar panel on top of a school roof

Compared to 2010, the prices of putting up a solar system has significantly declined. The market has boomed and improved significantly, along with the technology used to manufacture and produce solar panels and equipment, making the transition to greener energy a good and solid investment. This 2020 and in the coming years, it is expected that there would be greater improvements and innovations for higher panel efficiency and design, which can reduce the cost in the amounts of materials used in producing solar cells and better integration for our homes and businesses.

TAAL VOLCANO ASH ON YOUR SOLAR PANELS

Solar panels completely covered in volcanic ash

What Should You Do and How Should You Do It?

A few days into 2020 and we were struck by a tragedy when the Taal Volcano erupted on the afternoon of January 12, ending its 43 years of silence. The eruption caused ashfall in Batangas and nearby provinces like Cavite and Laguna, and even reaching as far as Metro Manila. Toxic ash with a foul odor and hazardous particulate matter instantly transformed the land into a vast color of gloomy gray.

What happens to my system?

Solar panels with volcanic ash on it

When solar panels are covered with thick layers of ash, the performance of the solar panel system decreases. The power loss increases with the increase in the quantity of ash on the PV system. In some instances, it can be a complete drop of output if the ashen panels have already hardened and become “espasol”.

What do I do?

A man sweeping volcanic ash off of solar panels

Anyone can clean their own panels as long as safety practices are observed. Volcanic ash can be dangerous as its particles are very hard and tiny with jagged edges. It can cause eye, nose, and lung irritation. It can also cause breathing problems. Thick layers of ash can accumulate and harden, causing roofs to collapse over time and clogging your house’s gutters. This is why you should observe extreme caution and be careful of its residue.

How do I do it?

Rooftop solar panels with volcanic ash

When cleaning a roof with ash, it’s important to do so safely and have a lifeline or rope, a good set of rubber shoes, a dust mask (N95 or equivalent), helmet, and goggles. In other words, proper and complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Other materials needed are a broom/walis, a walis tambo, a scooper or trowel, trash bags, a hose, and running water. A power washer could be used but set on the broadest spray option to do the job effectively and not overly abrade the panels.

5 Steps in Cleaning the Ash Off Your Solar Panels

A man cleaning volcanic ash off of solar panels

  1. Take out as much debris as possible from the solar panels and roof – carefully. Make sure to clean out the gutter. You can plug the gutter hole with an old, wet t-shirt or rag to avoid ash from building up in the pipes.
  2. Brush out the debris carefully with a broom or soft-bristled brush.
  3. After most of the ash has been swept and removed from the roof, rinse down the remaining debris.
  4. The panels can then be washed and cleaned with a squeegee or soft brush. Some dishwashing liquid soap can be used, with a tablespoon of baking soda, mixed in a bucket of water. The baking soda will help neutralize the acidity of the ash. This mixture can be used as the final soap wash.
  5. Rinse. Do not dry wipe the panels with visible dust because it will make the cloth act like sandpaper.

Do note that the roof will be slicker than normal when ash is mixed with water/soapy water.

To our valued clients

You may contact 0915.269.5403 or 7504.0092 to request for Solar Panel Ash Cleaning. We strongly recommend that you have your roofs cleaned to ensure that your roof gutters are debris-free and ash-free before the Solaric team cleans the solar panels.

Let us continue to pray for the safety of all evacuated families near, around, and within the vicinity of Taal. Stay safe Philippines!

DOES COLD WEATHER AFFECT YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM?

How solar systems harness energy from the sun

It’s the holidays and at the same time, the temperature continues to drop. Will it affect the performance of your solar system?

It is the sun’s light

Top shot of a solar panel with sunlight bouncing off of it

Even during cold seasons including areas that experience winter or snow or rain, your solar system will continue to generate power. This is because solar panels create electricity through the sun’s light and not heat. Probably one of the best advantages of solar power is that it is not affected by the external temperature. In fact, colder temperatures can improve and enhance the performance of your system. In addition to that, too much heat can cause energy losses because hot temperatures, especially during summer, can result in the elevation of electrons’ energy levels. The state of this high energy impedes the production of electricity since the energy is transformed into heat instead of electricity.

External temperatures do not affect the sunlight gathered by the solar panels but it does impact how energy is produced inside the cells. That is why even if there is the same quantity of sunlight, too much heat on the panels can cause drops in energy produced. This is also the reason why cool and colder temperatures can be beneficial to your system.

Chilly winds

A man on a rooftop installing solar

Solar systems consistently prove themselves as reliable sources of electricity even in extremely cold climates, unless the solar panels are covered in snow – which is not applicable for the Philippines given that it is a tropical country. Rest assured that the cold winds brought to you by this season will not reduce your energy production and will blow away the heat instead to ensure better performance of your system. Owners also do not need to be afraid of strong winds as solar panels can sustain winds of up to 200kph – installed tough only by Solaric.

SOLARIC DELIVERS JOY TO THE CHILDREN OF CARAMOAN

Solaric President in front of a school

The Bawal Brownout Christmas Gift

BMW Owners Society of Safe Riders (BOSS) donating televisions to a school

On November 8, 2019, members of the BMW Owners Society of Safe Riders (BOSS) and volunteers from Solaric Corp. headed over to a place that was more than 500 kilometers away from Metro Manila – Caramoan Central School in Camarines Sur – to deliver joy to its 946 students.

The BOSS Riders distributed 48-inch TVs for every classroom of the school, along with school supplies, backpacks, and many more kits and essentials for the students. The teachers were also given gifts of appreciation. Meanwhile, Solaric turned over a 1.08 kWp Hybrid Solar Panel System with 2 units of 24V Lithium batteries to the school, with the system capable of powering the entire computer lab. The students and teachers were filled with joy to receive the bundle of gifts from both organizations.

Solaric’s Corporate Social Responsibility

Solaric President receiving gifts

Solaric President and CEO Mike De Guzman said, “When I was thinking about our Christmas CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) activity, I thought, ‘ano pong magandang donation ang mabibigay ko sa ating mga kababayan’? Magbigay ng kuryente sa mga lugar na walang kuryente o maraming brownout.”

“Far-flung towns, especially those facing the warming Pacific, are subject to wilder weather, super typhoons and blackouts that last weeks or even months. Since ignorance grows where the lights darken, we decided to contribute our special talents and skills to energize this chosen public school with a Bawal Brownout computer lab and combine it with the multimedia endowment of the BOSS Riders that modernized the classrooms with 48″ flat-screen TVs and devices loaded with digital lesson plans,” he added.

So that is what the management and employees of Solaric Corp. delivered: a Bawal Brownout solar system. The 1.08 kWp hybrid solar PV system consisted of four solar panels, two lithium batteries, and an inverter. The solar solution now powers the computer lab of the school. A total of 946 students benefit directly from the Solaric Christmas donation.

Powering School Computer Labs

Caramoan Central School Principal Dr. Oscar Parola said, “Alam mo, ang dami daming dala ng grupo ninyo (referring to the BOSS Riders and Solaric personnel), tuwang tuwa yung mga bata. Pati mga teachers ang daming pasalubong. Nagpapasalamat talaga kami sa inyo!”

On November 28, 2019, upon the site visit and technical inspection of the Solaric team, the school offered a warm and gracious welcoming ceremony for the rooftop solar company. During the early morning flag ceremony, De Guzman gave a short inspiring message.

“How did we power a public school? We fastened 4 solar panels in our proven typhoon-proof fashion, installed a hybrid off-grid inverter and our two advanced research 10-year Lithium batteries. Our engineers designed a Solaric solution to provide enough juice to keep the laptops, tablets, and computers running in the computer lab during normal days and during times of crisis. The power solution has the capability to charge at least 400 cellphones or power banks when it is the only source of electrical power around. Yes, we can deliver power in the very darkest of situations. That is what Solaric is all about,” said De Guzman.

“Even if there are typhoons, you will still have power,” he enthused.

Then, in the first week of December, Typhoon Tisoy struck and devastated Bicol. In the disaster’s aftermath a few days later, there was no electricity in several provinces in the region. In Caramoan, there was no power – people could not charge their phones, they could not communicate with relatives, they could not turn on the lights. The town was surrounded in darkness.

However, at the Caramoan Central School, there was power. People flocked to the school to charge their phones and call their families.

“Every child deserves to wake up to a special gift this Christmas. Thank you to the ongoing kindness and goodwill of all our clients, dealers, partners, advocates, and personnel, because it is through them that we are able to turn on the sun, each and every day, one rooftop at a time,” said Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric.

“We are very much grateful for the donation of the solar panels with batteries and installation. When there was no power, the system could even power two aircons at one time! Solaric – the best! Maraming Salamat!” grinned Principal Dr. Parola.

That is the power of turning on the sun.

MYTH BUSTER ALERT: YOU DON’T NEED BATTERIES TO GO SOLAR

The old way of doing solar and the 2020 way of doing solar

The never-ending question about batteries

A wall of solar batteries

Long, long ago, when solar was in its earlier days, most of the solar panel systems operated with batteries for purposes of storage. Through the years, solar has evolved. More recent technologies were developed. The Grid Tie Solar was born.

Grid Tie

Top view of a structure with solar panels

The grid tie is the most popular and most commonly installed solar panel system in the Philippines, but it is also the most commonly misunderstood. The name speaks for itself. Grid Tie means the solar system is “tied” to the grid. It works together, tied to each other, like partners. In a grid tie solar system, the solar panel system is interconnected with the electrical grid (Meralco).

What happens when you have a grid tie system

Houses with solar roofing

During the daytime when the sun is shining, the first priority power of the house will be solar. The house will get its power from the solar panels. If the power that the solar provides is still not enough, then that is the only time that power will be taken from the electrical grid. When there is no sun (such as night time), then the system uses electricity from the grid.

Reversing the situation

A hand holding up a lit lightbulb

When solar cannot provide enough power from the panels for the entire house, then the system gets the power from the grid. Now let’s say the situation was reversed. What if the solar produces so much power, more power than the house can consume? What happens to all the excess power? In such cases, if the home is registered for the Net Metering program of the utility company, then all that excess power can be “exported” or fed to the grid. What that means is all the excess power is “sold” to the utility company. With a grid tie system and with net metering, a house is likely to offset its nighttime power consumption with its daytime export. The result is a drastically reduced electric bill.

Going back to the myth

The answer is a simple, straightforward, hard NO. Going solar does not mean you need to get batteries. You only need batteries if you want to “store” energy, or if there is a need to do energy storage. This is typically a necessity in areas where there is no grid power, or areas commonly referred to as power-starved areas. In such cases, then the Grid Tie option is not possible (because there is no grid to tie to), and therefore the battery solutions are more ideal.

MY MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL IS 20K: SHOULD I GO SOLAR?

Close up of an electricity bill

What going solar really means

Shot of a home's roof with solar panels

Going solar is the new trend. It has become a lifestyle – one that has captivated Asia: go clean, green, safe, sustainable, and renewable. Solar panel systems can definitely reduce electric bills by 30% to 75%, increase the market value of your property, reduce your carbon footprint, and help protect the planet. The question, however, is: should you go solar?

Ask yourself the right questions

Going solar is not a simple initiative. There are many things to consider before making the decision. If you are uncertain about whether to go solar or not, here are the main questions to ask yourselves. We want to help you make the best decision.

1. Do you want to use the power of the sun?

The sun shining

The Philippines is a tropical Southeast Asian country. The average home in the Philippines receives an average of 4.5 hours of sunlight per day. This means that if you live in the Philippines, then you are certainly one of the very best candidates in the world for solar. The sun is a free, unlimited energy resource, and it is going to continue to shine for the next 5 billion years. The first question is: do you want to use the sun’s power? If yes, then proceed.

2. Do you want to reduce your bill?

This also comes with the fact that the Philippines is plagued with constantly increasing power rates. The average electricity price for homeowners is, to date, the second-highest in Asia. Each year, the power rates soar. The demand increases, the supply decreases, and the generation charges continue to climb. It is time to seriously ask yourself what your energy goals are. Why do you want to go solar? Is it because you want to reduce your monthly electric bills? If yes, then by how much do you want to reduce your monthly bills?

3. Do you want to eliminate your bill (or do you want a Zero Bill)?

If the answer to question #2 was yes, then it is time to examine further and ponder this question #3. There is a major difference between the two questions. You will have to decide which direction you want to take because your answer will determine the next steps. Once you’ve decided whether you simply want to reduce your bill or if you’ve decided you want to get rid of your bill altogether, then it is time to move on to question #4.

4. Are you willing to invest in a system that will give you an ROI of 5 years or less?

If you have a roof, you can go solar. If you want to reduce your bill, you can go solar. If you want to eliminate your bill, you can go solar. This question, though, is now about the investment. With any solar investment, the typical return on investment (ROI) is five years or less. This makes it a wise investment – not just financially, but environmentally as well. You have to be willing, ready and prepared to make that investment. The 5-year ROI does not even take into account the credits you may generate from exporting your excess power to the grid through the net metering program. With that setup, we’ve seen solar clients achieve ROI in 3 years. If you consume all the power that your system generates, you will still achieve ROI in 5 years or less. This makes the investment a win-win: economically profitable, payback guaranteed, and environmentally responsible. Most people say that when you go solar, the system pays for itself in the first five years. In the succeeding 20 years, the system pays you.

5. Do you want to protect the planet?

A hand holding the earth

Going solar used to simply be about being financially sensible and being practical. Now, however, it has become a serious advocacy about clean energy from the sun. If you install rooftop solar, your home will be a powerhouse that will combat greenhouse gas emissions. You will reduce your carbon footprint on planet earth. How? With solar, you would be less dependent on your utility company, which burns fossil fuels to produce electricity. If you solarize your home, then you will be a renewable energy source. This translates to the fact that you will be directly contributing to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world and future.

If you answered YES to all five questions above, then you are forward-thinking and embracing the energy reform decade. It also means that you are ready to go solar and it will most definitely be a worthwhile endeavor and investment for you.
