AIRSAFE 101: LET’S TALK ABOUT ANIONS

What is anion in air purifiers?

Anions are negatively charged ions. An air ionizer (or negative ion generator) ionizes (or electrically charges) air molecules. Air ionizers are used in our AirSAFE units to remove particles from the air. By electrically charging air molecules, the anion feature produces and releases negative ion in the air. These ions will stick to larger particles (which can still be naked to a human eye), band together, causing it to get bigger in size, making it easier for the air purifier to detect and filter the surrounding air.

How the AirSAFE works

AIRSAFE 101: WHAT IS PM?

Ever curious about the numbers displayed on your AirSAFE95 and AS-MAX air purifier and filtration units? What do they mean and how do they keep the air safe?

PM = Particulate Matter

Particulate Matter, or commonly abbreviated as PM, are particle pollution that can be a mixture of solid and liquid particles suspended in the air. It is commonly a term for airborne pollutants that vary in sizes and composition such as smoke, pollen, pet dander, mold, soot, and dirt.

PM in AirSAFE

The AirSAFE with its Japanese AI technology and particulate matter sensor can identify pollutants on its surrounding area and automatically adjust its fan speed. The displayed number you can see on an AS95 and AS-MAX’s panel board is its built-in particulate matter indicator which shows the number of particulates currently being detected by the AirSAFE in the area.

The numbers will change depending on the pollution found in the air, such as dust, dirt, soot, smoke, or other particles that can be visible to the naked eye.

0-80 = indicator turns to Green, which means the area is clean and stable
81-120 = indicator turns to Blue, which means the unit can sense minimal particulates or fog in the area (moderate)
121-160 = indicator turns to Yellow, which means 50% of the area is polluted
161-500 = indicator turns to Red, which means the quality of the air in the area is harmful

If the indicator turns red, you may notice a sudden adjustment in the fan speed if you are in auto mode. This will decrease on its own when it determines that the air in the surrounding area is clean and stable. If not, you may need to manually increase the fan speed to filter out the air faster.

Even without the specific particulate matter number indicator, the same color system applies for the AirSAFE40 model.

HOW DOES THE HEPA FILTER WORK?

When buying an air purifier, the most common thing you will encounter is the HEPA filter. What is a HEPA filter and how does it work?

What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA filter or high-efficiency particulate air filter is designed to effectively capture harmful particles in almost every size through a very fine mesh similar to a kitchen sieve. HEPA filters are known to be very crucial components of air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and air-conditioning or ventilating units.

When combined with other outer filters that trap larger particles likes hair, dust, and pet dander, it reduces the strain in the HEPA filter and helps it capture the even tinier particles like pollen, mold, viruses, and allergens at a highly effective rate by trapping them on its fibers through impact, interception, and diffusion. Larger particles can’t get past through these net of fibers upon impact and is straightaway captured while smaller particles are intercepted along the way as they pass through the filter and stick. The even smaller particles that are invisible to the eye are captured through diffusion. This involves the science of Brownian motion. These tiny particles are so small; they barely have mass which makes them bounce around when they hit with a gas molecule, causing them to hit the fibers and eventually get stuck.

When choosing and understanding how a HEPA filter should work, a HEPA grade can help you compare its efficiency. The general HEPA grade standard ranges from H10 to H12 and can trap particles that are greater than or equal to 0.3 microns in 99.997% efficiency.

The AirSAFE units are equipped with an H11 grade filter but it can also be upgraded up to H13. The H13 has a denser fiber and falls under the medical grade. They are commonly used in medical and health care facilities that are more exposed in dangerous toxins and have a greater particulate retention rate.
