THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Is the Philippines onboard?

What’s going on with climate change this 2022

What’s going on with climate change this 2022

This 2022, global emissions are hitting record levels. They show no apparent signs of declining. Statistics reveal that the past years were the hottest years ever recorded in history. Additionally, temperatures of winter in the artic zone have increased by 3 degrees Celsius, compared to the 1990s. Even worse, coral reefs incessantly die. Sea levels continue to rise. Air pollution is ever-booming. These are clear, irrevocable life-threatening impacts of climate change. The Philippines presidency is pushing for the transition to renewable energy to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on the country.

During his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered at Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City, President Bongbong Marcos said the use of renewable energy will top his administration’s climate change agenda. “We will increase our use of renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal, solar, and wind.” This shift to renewable energy is a solution to help slow down the effects of climate change.

According to the United Nations-body Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its report released in April 2022, solar and wind energy and batteries have shown sustained cost reductions of up to 85% since 2010.

The irreversible effects

Climate change is causing disruptions and harmful consequences to the environment. There is now growing understanding and recognition of affordable solutions that can lead us to a more sustainable future. Latest figures and data indicate that if we shift towards cleaner sources of energy today, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions within 12 years.

“I am enthusiastic about putting a stop to the increase in emissions. We need concrete plans to bring our renewable goals to fruition. It is time to promote the concept of net-zero to the Philippines. In fact, it’s time for us to get on the frontline of climate change,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and Director of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

What is the Paris Agreement?

On December 12, 2015 in Paris, France, parties to the UNFCCC reached a milestone agreement to battle climate change and to intensify actions and funding for a low-carbon sustainable future. This visionary policy brings all countries together for a common cause – of undertaking efforts and implementing a framework to combat climate change together by strengthening global responses for a safer world and future.

FROM 11K TO 3K: OGIE & HIS 9kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

FROM 11K TO 3K: OGIE & HIS 9kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

In 2019, our client’s average bill for his residence in Parañaque was 11k monthly. He initially installed a 5kWp, and after seeing his bill drop, he installed another 4kWp. The total capacity is now a 9kWp Grid Tie System. Equipped with their rooftop solar power plant, the family uses Unli-AC and never have to worry about power usage and consumption.

Ogie wanted a company that could deliver on the promise – a company that carries Tier1 panels and top quality brands, one that is reliable with a solid reputation. His goal was a drastic drop in the electric bill in 2019 which ranged from 9k to 11k each month. Daytime appliances include aircons, lights, refrigerator, TVs, computers, and swimming pool.

Fast forward 3 years later: “With my 9kWp system, my bill ranges now from Php3,000 to Php3,200,” says Ogie, yet another satisfied client of Solaric. “My savings each month is Php6,000 to Php8,000, so I’m very happy. The Solaric team is very efficient!”

Lower Bill vs Zero Bill

Think about your end goal when choosing to install solar. Do you want to reduce your bill? Or do you want to ELIMINATE your bill? At the bare minimum, you should put enough solar to cover the usual daytime appliances of the entire household.

Go Green, Go Renewable

When you get your own solar power plant on your rooftop: you reduce your electric bill expenses, AND you reduce your carbon footprint – which means that you are helping protect the environment. A typical Solaric system eliminates more than four tons of CO2 per year which is equivalent to planting 50 trees each year. You become less dependent on traditional sources of non-renewable energy.

ZERO BILL FEATURE: GERRY & HIS 12.4kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

ZERO BILL FEATURE: GERRY & HIS 12.4kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

Solaric can absolutely deliver the Zero Bill promise. Just ask Gerry Vaño, another satisfied Solaric client.

In an exclusive, gated, private neighborhood of a quiet subdivision in the South, stands the majestic, beautiful, 500 square meter, 3-bedroom contemporary Filipino-style solar home of Gerry – one of our very first Zero Bill clients. Since 2018, he’s been enjoying the happiness and rewards of a #ZeroBill. With a 12.4 kWp Grid Tie System installed on his roofdeck, his monthly bill went from 11k to ZERO.

In 2017, Gerry decided to install solar panels. He approached Solaric and they conducted a comprehensive site survey. His household appliances included a washing machine, dryer, two refrigerators, two water pumps, three television sets, 11 air conditioners, and a home theater. His electric bill amounted to an average of 10 to 11 thousand pesos each month. Solaric offered an array of solar options that would give him optimum power at the lowest cost. Gerry selected efficiency and long-term financial feasibility by having 40 rooftop solar panels installed (12.4kWp).

A couple months after installing solar, Gerry received his first Zero Bill (total amount due was Php0.00 in his monthly electric bill). “The moment the Net Metering kicked in, I got a Zero Bill. Then, all succeeding months were all zero bills!” exclaimed Gerry, as he showed us his stack of zero bills accumulated the past year.

When asked to discuss the profitability of his solar power system, Gerry paused for a moment’s reflection. “Yes, I’m able to save 10 to 11 thousand a month. But we don’t talk about ROI (return on investment) in these cases. Anong ROI in buying an expensive car? Pogi points!” Gerry laughed in amusement. “It’s really about utilizing whatever is renewable, and solar was the only thing that was feasible. I’ve been planning on installing solar even before the house was constructed.”

The Zero Bill Phenomenon

The Zero Bill Phenomenon

Gerry brings the zero bill phenomenon towards the limelight. “What does the zero bill mean to me? Sure, one part of it is about savings – I have a monthly electric bill that says zero. It makes everyone in the house scream with happiness. On the other hand, my investment pay-off is renewable energy. Sustainability. I care about the environment and the planet. This is my contribution to saving our future. That is what makes solar worth it!”

How To Choose The Right Size For Your Solar System

How To Choose The Right Size For Your Solar System

The best investment you can make this year: rooftop solar. Investing in solar is the smart solution for homeowners and business owners. Solar is easy to maintain and operate, plus it comes with long-term performance (25 to 30 years) and lowers your carbon footprint.

You would want to know how to correctly size your solar power system so you can achieve your goals and make the most of your grid tie solar system.

STEP 1: DETERMINE HOW MUCH SAVINGS YOU WANT FROM YOUR SOLAR

STEP 1: DETERMINE HOW MUCH SAVINGS YOU WANT FROM YOUR SOLAR

This is an important first step. You should define your financial goals (how much savings you want). Are you looking at 30% savings? 50% savings? 75% savings? Or are you looking at getting that coveted Zero Bill? This is also in line with several other factors, such as budget, rooftop space, location, power consumption patterns, etc. The goal is to size your PV array to achieve your end goal.

STEP 2: ANALYZE YOUR POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

STEP 2: ANALYZE YOUR POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

Different households or facilities use power differently. There are some households with children in the home all throughout the day, using power in a homeschooling setup. Other households have no one in the house during the daytime, and most power consumption is at night time. When the Solaric engineer conducts a site survey or site assessment, all these factors are considered, along with other elements such as rooftop space, shading, etc., prior to preparing the design of your solar system. There are various constraints on every project and such restrictions affect design and system size: budget, space, and energy offset. We want to design and build a system for you that offsets a certain percentage of your nighttime power consumption.

STEP 3: CALCULATE YOUR kWh USAGE

STEP 3: CALCULATE YOUR kWh USAGE

Your usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) can be obtained from your electric bill. It is ideal to provide copies of several months of bills to our engineer, so that they can be analyzed. Energy spikes and consumption are usually highest in the summer, with heavy use of aircons and appliances during those months. The most ideal way to determine your average monthly kWh usage is to add up your kWh consumption for 12 months, then divide the figure by 12 to get your average monthly consumption. Divide by 30 to determine your daily kWh usage. Another way to determine your usage is to use your appliances and plug them in a power consumption table. Alternatively, our engineers can also check your basetime loads during their site assessment.

STEP 4: CALCULATE THE SIZE OF YOUR SYSTEM

Once you have determined your daily kWh power requirement, divide it by the Peak Sun Hours of your location to get the kW output. From there, we can identify how many solar panels you will need for your system, that is in line with your end goal of going solar.

STEP 5: CONSIDER OTHER FACTORS

Lastly, it is also crucial to fine tune the system design. Other factors should be taken into account, such as the mounting system that will be needed for your rooftop, the direction the panels will face, surrounding trees or elements that may cause shading, equipment type, conduit run, net metering requirements – all these play a vital role in finalizing system design.

What Is Net Metering and How Does It Work?

Thanks to Grid Tie Solar with Net Metering, your solar can now lower your bill – or even eliminate it.

Net Metering is a utility rate program offered by your electric company (Meralco) that requires the electric company to purchase the surplus or excess solar energy that your solar panels produce.

How does it work?

Upon installing a grid tie solar power system, you can apply for Net Metering with your electric company. With net metering, you can export the excess power generated by your solar, if the house or facility does not consume it. This means when your solar energy system produces more electricity than your home consumes, then the excess electricity is sent to the grid and your utility credits you for it. Net metering is what makes rooftop solar such a great way to reap the benefits of going solar.

How net metering gives you savings

In simple terms, net metering gives you credits for returning electricity to the grid. In doing this, with these credits, you can now offset electricity that you will use from the utility during night time. This mechanism offers the full economic value of rooftop solar. With a solar system that is sized properly, you can reduce your monthly electric bills by 50%. However, if your target is a Zero Bill, then you just need to size your system in accordance to your monthly power consumption and baseline loads. The right system that fits your goals can potentially eliminate all your monthly electricity expenses!

Daytime power

Solar harvests the most power during the middle of the day when the sun is shining the brightest. However, for most households, the problem is that the middle of the day also happens to be when they use the least amount of electricity. Therefore, during that time, your panels are producing way more electricity than your home needs. With net metering, whenever the solar produces more power than the house needs, it is exported to the grid, and you will see the credits in the next electric bill you receive.

Night time consumption

At night, when your solar is not producing because it shuts down when the sun sets, you take electricity from the grid. The best way to OFFSET this night time consumption is to accumulate enough credits from the exported surplus power during daytime. This, in essence, is how to reduce your electric bill by 30%, or 50%, or 100%.

Best benefit of net metering

Best benefit of net metering

The best benefit of net metering for solar homeowners are the savings. For the first 3 to 4 years, you get your ROI through your monthly savings. For the succeeding 21 to 22 years or even more, you profit from your solar.

SOLAR VS MERALCO

SOLAR VS MERALCO

The facts remain. The Philippines has one of the highest electricity rates on the planet, and the highest in Asia. How can the Philippines lower its cost of power? How can the Philippines improve national energy security? There is only one answer: by tapping the potential of renewable energy. The most ideal? Solar rooftop energy. The solution is to drive solar power potential to ensure lower power rates.

What’s in it for the utility?

What’s in it for the utility?

People are asking a simple question: what exactly is the incentive for the utility? Why should they transition from coal when that has been working for them for decades? The unanswered question drives the Philippines to continue trudging along in the power sector without gaining momentum into what we all know is the renewable energy future. Tomorrow is all about RE. Tomorrow is all about energy efficiency. Tomorrow is all about distributed storage.

What’s going on?

The target is 8 gigawatts of solar installations by year 2030, with 35% of that energy being generated by rooftop solar. That in itself is an investment value of nearly $3 billion.

Solaric Vice President Jade De Guzman said, “There are massive opportunities as we shift towards a renewable Philippines. It’s about time we replace old school energy involving fossil fuels and coal, and anything detrimental to the planet and the human population. There are so many feasible options available to us – wind, hydro, geothermal, and of course solar – which remains top of the list in terms of being affordable and diverse. It’s a no-brainer.”

Breaking it down

Breaking it down

“Each kilowatt of rooftop solar we install is equivalent to a decrease in the import of coal and diesel power. That simple fact alone saves our nation billions of dollars each year,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. “Our only roadblocks now are regulatory – let’s look forward to regulations being passed that make sense and propel us towards a sustainable future.”

IT’S RAINING – CAN I USE MY SOLAR?

IT’S RAINING – CAN I USE MY SOLAR?

With the rain and storms ongoing, should I be worried that my solar harvest will be affected?

Contrary to the popular misconception that cold and rainy weather will affect your solar system’s efficiency, your solar panels will still continue to produce electricity even in the cold or freezing or rainy weather. In fact, the cooler the temperature, the better for your solar panels compared to warm and scorching heat during the summer. Yes, your solar panels perform at their maximum at lower temperatures with bright sun.

The simple explanation to this is because solar panels create electricity from the sun’s light and not heat. Although solar and heat seem to be a likely pair, heat in fact can reduce the electricity production of solar panels because they increase the electron’s energy levels thus the high energy transfers into heat instead of electricity and interferes with electricity production causing what you call a “heat loss”.

What matters is on the inside

What matters is on the inside

Even exposed to the same amount of sunlight, too much heat on the solar panels will cause drops in the energy produced. External temperatures do not affect the sunlight gathered by the solar panels but it does impact how energy is produced inside the cells. Colder temperature promotes better energy production that can par with the lesser daylight hours in winter solstice. Rest assured that you should not be afraid and anxious of the cold winds, instead, they will benefit you by blowing away the heat and ensure a higher efficiency and better performance of your solar system.

ADVANTAGES OF GOING SOLAR NOW

ADVANTAGES OF GOING SOLAR NOW

At Solaric, we are always thrilled whenever we see our clients happy and satisfied with their solar systems – and some of them even achieve the legendary zero bill! It’s never too late to invest in clean energy and enjoy these solar advantages!

LOWER YOUR BILLS

LOWER YOUR BILLS

With solar, you can decrease your monthly electric bills without compromising your consumption. Your solar system is the First Priority power – it will supply power to the appliances you use during daytime. If the house needs more power than the solar can provide, it is only then that the house will draw power from the grid (aka Distribution Utility aka Meralco). Any excess power generated by solar is exported and converted into credits through the “Net Metering” program. This means if the solar produces more power than you can consume, the power is not wasted, because it is exported to the grid. You can then offset your night time power consumption this way. The result: lower monthly electric bills. The money saved can now be allocated to other household priorities!

UNLI-AC!

There is no escaping the intermittent heat we experience living in a tropical country. Thanks to solar, there is no need to worry about using your air-conditioning units to beat the heat without any hesitation! For Php 250,000, you can install a 5.6kWp grid tie system that can easily cover up to 4 units of 1hp aircons running during the daytime along with the usual household appliances that run during daytime.

CLEAN AND GREEN

CLEAN AND GREEN

Compared to fossil fuels, solar energy is clean, green, sustainable, and renewable, therefore greatly reduces your carbon footprint. As an RE, it does not contribute to pollution in the way that old traditional energy sources do – plus it’s cheaper and cost effective especially in the long run! Solar energy, which comes from the sun and is also the most abundant source of energy on Earth, is harvested by the solar panels installed on your roof. The energy is then converted by your inverter into power that your household can safely use.

LOW MAINTENANCE

Compared to other renewable sources of energy, solar energy is very low in maintenance. You only have to clean them once a year, especially here in the Philippines – depending on how heavily polluted your area is. During rainy season, the panels are even washed by the rain. It’s considered a wise investment because of its life span of 25 years!

WHAT’S TRENDING: THE RENEWABLE AND SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE OF 2022

WHAT’S TRENDING: THE RENEWABLE AND SUSTAINABLE LIFESTYLE OF 2022

Having a green home does not just necessarily refer to filling your home with various plants and power saving appliances which are ongoing trends during this pandemic, but it also means having a home that is environmentally self-sustainable and creates a positive contribution to the environment.

Promoting a green lifestyle

Promoting a green lifestyle

Integrating your home design to allow more natural light to enter and using eco-friendly materials to build a home can be a good start. The demand to be more environment-friendly are exceptionally high these days, with homeowners usually approaching architects and contractors to make their homes more nature and solar friendly. Take for example Team Kramer. They planned ahead and incorporated a solar-ready design in their home. This lessened construction costs and maximized the capability of future solar system expansion. Not only did they become power producers with their personal power plant – they also filter their own water and grow their own vegetables in their garden. This is a stark example of 2022 lifestyle. Renewable and sustainable living at its finest!

A green home not only contributes positive effects for the environment but likewise increases your resiliency from external harmful factors caused by climate change or unstable grid power supply. This 2022, the trend is to equip your home to be battle-proof. Most homeowners in the metro are already going solar by installing grid tie solar power systems on their rooftops. With a solar home, you are able to generate your own power. During the daytime, your first priority power will be Solar. The result? Lower electric bills. The goal? A zero bill. You can definitely enjoy guilt-free AC and guilt-free power if you choose to turn on the sun.

Help the environment

A typical Solaric system eliminates more than four tons of CO2 per year which is equivalent to planting 50 trees each year. You become less dependent on traditional sources of non-renewable energy. You reduce your electric bills and your carbon footprint as well – building a more sustainable future for generations to come!

5 REASONS TO CONSIDER SOLAR FOR YOUR BUSINESS

5 REASONS TO CONSIDER SOLAR FOR YOUR BUSINESS

Solar energy is harvested and harnessed from the sun, and this solar power can be used to run homes and businesses. The best thing about solar is that it’s a renewable energy source – which means it’s environmentally friendly. Then there’s the bonus: solar energy given off by the sun is free. Here are 5 reasons to consider solar not just for your home, but also for your business!

SOLAR CAN REDUCE OR ELIMINATE ELECTRIC BILLS

SOLAR CAN REDUCE OR ELIMINATE ELECTRIC BILLS

Electricity bills have continued to rise unpredictably during the past years. The shift to renewables has the world scrambling to achieve 2030 targets, and along with it, the interest in going solar booms each passing year. By installing a grid tie system for your business, your solar will be interconnected to the grid. You can then avail of the net metering program with your distribution utility or electric company. This will now enable you to export the excess power that your system generates. On Sundays, for example, if the business is closed, then all power generated by your solar PV system on Sundays will be exported to the grid. You will then see the credits for this exported power each month on your electric bill. End result: lower electric bills and lower operational expenses.

SOLAR HELPS YOUR BUSINESS IN BEING “GREEN”

Solar energy is clean, renewable and sustainable – unlike coal and gas. Solar does not pollute the air or destroy the environment. Solar does not contribute to global warming and climate change. For many businesses all over the world, these environmental impact decisions are of utmost priority. At present day in year 2022, most businesses are concerned about protecting the environment and reducing their carbon footprint. The obvious choice for a business located in tropical Philippines is to go Solar.

SOLAR GENERATES A GOOD RETURN ON INVESTMENT

Going solar is now more cost-effective. Compared to 10 years ago, costs of solar panels have decreased almost 70%, and the trend seems to show that technology costs will steadily decrease through the years. With all these combined, ROI for a typical grid tie system installation runs between 3.3 years to 5 years – which definitely makes going solar a wise investment for the business.
