What’s going on with climate change this 2022

This 2022, global emissions are hitting record levels. They show no apparent signs of declining. Statistics reveal that the past years were the hottest years ever recorded in history. Additionally, temperatures of winter in the artic zone have increased by 3 degrees Celsius, compared to the 1990s. Even worse, coral reefs incessantly die. Sea levels continue to rise. Air pollution is ever-booming. These are clear, irrevocable life-threatening impacts of climate change. The Philippines presidency is pushing for the transition to renewable energy to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on the country.

During his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered at Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City, President Bongbong Marcos said the use of renewable energy will top his administration’s climate change agenda. “We will increase our use of renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal, solar, and wind.” This shift to renewable energy is a solution to help slow down the effects of climate change.

According to the United Nations-body Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its report released in April 2022, solar and wind energy and batteries have shown sustained cost reductions of up to 85% since 2010.

Climate change is causing disruptions and harmful consequences to the environment. As we bid adieu to that wretched year of 2020, there was one thing our clients were really thankful for: having Solaric on their roof. Regardless of ECQ, MECQ, or GCQ, the sun provided dependable bill-crushing energy day in and day out. Electricity is the most exciting form of energy that human beings have discovered so far. Power plant boilers, steam turbines, and generators are three driving forces in a power station. The power plant boiler is the primary source of steam in most utility and industrial facilities.

With the power of common electricity comes the other half of the story. Did you know that burning tons of coal is needed in order to power a plant boiler so as to produce electricity? In the earlier days, this cause-effect action-reaction fact was inconsequential. Now, however, we are experiencing the by-products of fossil fuel power plant operation. We now have to consider long-term global consequences.

The science behind fossil fuel combustion

Fossil fuel power plant operation results in by-products. The combustion of fossil fuels results in gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapor. Such substances are pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. Coal-fired plants result in mercury, fly ash, and other traces of metals. Imagine all these elements discharged into the air that we breathe. Now, carbon dioxide and other pollution in the air are what lead to the ozone layer depletion or the gradual thinning of the upper atmosphere of the earth’s surface. Due to various human activities, the chemical compounds that contain gas released to the air is what causes climate change. The result? Humans suffering in extreme temperatures.

Then there’s climate change

They say 2019 really is the hottest year in recorded human history. Yes, the last four years were the hottest years in terms of global temperature records. This validates ongoing, continuing, long-term climate change. Yes, there is in fact an urgent need to address global warming and climate change. The planet is experiencing increased temperatures and extreme weather conditions, including more constant natural disasters. The sea ice cover is melting in the Arctic and Antarctica. The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctic are getting smaller. This is the reality of 2019. What will happen in the coming years?

Naturally, solar panels take up space and weigh about 20 kilograms each. Rooftop solar will only be ideal if the structural assessment of the roof is considered and recommended as viable.

This rate of carbon emissions would mean that the atmospheric carbon will be catastrophic in less than 15 years. The entire world is now already experiencing the effects of such, including the Philippines. We are now finally understanding that the effects include hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, and more devastating typhoons and natural disasters.

What can we do?

“Given our environmental predicament, I think it’s crucial for the Philippines to start investing aggressively in climate adaptation and to adjust responsibly to changes caused by climate change and global warming,” said Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

Adaptation or mitigation?

According to Wikipedia, the top five nations with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in the year 2017 were China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan. They will need to make that big switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. It is clear that adaptation comes hand in hand with mitigation because we need to reduce the carbon footprint of the planet.

What now?

Unfortunately, despite global efforts and even the Paris Agreement, fossil fuels still account for more than 2/3 of the world’s energy requirements. Even worse, carbon emission continues to increase because of increased fossil fuel consumption. Despite these facts and globally available updates, coal plant capacity is set to expand in various parts of the world, including the Philippines, which wants to double coal plant capacity.

“It is in the interest of our country to put her foot down and start implementing real action steps towards a clean, safe, and sustainable future. The good news is that solar is now widely available in the mainstream. The cost is competitive and within the same range of the cost of fossil fuel sources,” added De Guzman.
