THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Is the Philippines onboard?

What’s going on with climate change this 2022

What’s going on with climate change this 2022

This 2022, global emissions are hitting record levels. They show no apparent signs of declining. Statistics reveal that the past years were the hottest years ever recorded in history. Additionally, temperatures of winter in the artic zone have increased by 3 degrees Celsius, compared to the 1990s. Even worse, coral reefs incessantly die. Sea levels continue to rise. Air pollution is ever-booming. These are clear, irrevocable life-threatening impacts of climate change. The Philippines presidency is pushing for the transition to renewable energy to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change on the country.

During his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered at Batasan Pambansa in Quezon City, President Bongbong Marcos said the use of renewable energy will top his administration’s climate change agenda. “We will increase our use of renewable energy sources such as hydropower, geothermal, solar, and wind.” This shift to renewable energy is a solution to help slow down the effects of climate change.

According to the United Nations-body Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its report released in April 2022, solar and wind energy and batteries have shown sustained cost reductions of up to 85% since 2010.

The irreversible effects

Climate change is causing disruptions and harmful consequences to the environment. There is now growing understanding and recognition of affordable solutions that can lead us to a more sustainable future. Latest figures and data indicate that if we shift towards cleaner sources of energy today, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions within 12 years.

“I am enthusiastic about putting a stop to the increase in emissions. We need concrete plans to bring our renewable goals to fruition. It is time to promote the concept of net-zero to the Philippines. In fact, it’s time for us to get on the frontline of climate change,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and Director of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

What is the Paris Agreement?

On December 12, 2015 in Paris, France, parties to the UNFCCC reached a milestone agreement to battle climate change and to intensify actions and funding for a low-carbon sustainable future. This visionary policy brings all countries together for a common cause – of undertaking efforts and implementing a framework to combat climate change together by strengthening global responses for a safer world and future.

THANK YOU FOR THE #SUN AND POWER OF #SOLAR!

THANK YOU FOR THE #SUN AND POWER OF #SOLAR!

As we bid adieu to that wretched year of 2020, there was one thing our clients were really thankful for: having Solaric on their roof. Regardless of ECQ, MECQ, or GCQ, the sun provided dependable bill-crushing energy day in and day out. Summing up 2020, we started off with Taal volcano raining ashfall pandemonium, only to be cranked up by a factor of 100x with a once-in-a-century Pandemic, its ensuing economic devastation, and even mental health issues caused by the stresses of uncertainties.

For months, we have been cowering in our homes, dreading an unseen and indiscriminate virus, but at least it taught us to revel in gratitude and happiness of living simpler lives – which includes Plantitos and Plantitas, or the best creator of sushi bake.

Throughout the darkest days, we chose to keep our doors open. We housed our roof installers in our secure barracks and made sure everybody had sacks of rice, gallons of alcohol (the sanitizer type), and support to survive the pandemic storm. We believe the darkest days have passed, and we are now seeing the glimmering sunlight of the new year.

A Fresh Start For Solar Energy

A Fresh Start For Solar Energy

This 2021, we are counting on vaccination becoming an attainable reality, and universally reachable in all corners of our country like the Sun.

Maybe things will be different. Maybe we have to jog with face masks. Public transport may be forever altered. Maybe WFH or homeschool may become the norm. Maybe Zoom permanently replaced the usual in-person meetings.

From an Energy Provider perspective, there may be less power delivered to offices, malls, and schools – but the power has been diverted to homes instead. Your home is your fortress in these unsure times. Our clients who got solar now want more – to deal with the much greater demands, and upon the realization that their investment in Solar power was one of the smartest big ticket items they ever spent on. Our average installation size has grown to accommodate the growing demands of homes that have been transformed to home offices, virtual schools, and bakeshops (for all the Martha Stewarts).

How Solar Can Help You

How Solar Can Help You

What we do with great certainty is reduce your electric bills and in some cases, take it away completely by going carbon negative. Negative is good these days when it comes to certain tests, and we at times can make it happen even to electric bills. Simply produce more electricity than you consume and send back the excess electricity via Net Metering to the power grid, like a personally owned private power plant.

A single solar panel installed by Solaric has the power bill numbing capability of P500 a month. Imagine what 20 or 40 solar panels on your roof can do. Our prices are amazing only to be out-classed by our after sales service. With Solar, you Save Money AND you Save the Environment.

GREEN TRENDS FOR 2021

GREEN TRENDS FOR 2021

The unexpected events of 2020 made us realize things about life and led us to explore hobbies. As most were forced to stay at home, people became more creative and embraced an environmentally-friendly lifestyle, which led to the rise of plantitos and plantitas, increased interest in home produce, and finding ways to cope with the demands of staying and working at home to avoid another round of bill shock. The takeaway was that most people found more ways to adapt and prepare for a secure future.

Establishing Your Own Home Garden

Establishing Your Own Home Garden

The interest of growing plants and your own fruits and vegetables within the perimeters of your home drastically increased in 2020, hence, the coined term ‘plantito’ or ‘plantita’ came to rise for people who simply enjoy plants and gardening. It is expected that this trend will still continue for 2021 as people become even more interested in home sustainability and the eco-lifestyle. The Kramers are among those who practice planting their own fruits and vegetables on their backyard even before the pandemic started.

Watch the video here!

Home gardening has a lot of physical, mental and environmental benefits. Imagine having easy access to your own fresh produce anytime, without leaving the comforts of your home. This also provides a positive impact to the environment. According to some plantitas, they even feel a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment whenever they do gardening – something that most of us lost during the consecutive lockdowns and pandemic. You also get to control whether to use chemicals or go full organic.

Smarter Homes and Eco-saving Appliances

SOLAR: YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE

Top shot of solar panels on a roof

It is the most practical option out thereTwo rows of solar panels on each side of a roof's tip

Deciding to invest in renewable energy for your property means that you are considering saving money on your monthly electric bills and reducing your carbon footprint for the environment. Alongside it comes the research of finding and weighing the best renewable energy option that is right for you.

The Sunny Philippines

Solaric solar panels on a green rooftop

In a tropical country like the Philippines, we are very lucky to be abundant with the sun’s energy. With proper space, orientation, and sunlight, solar panels can almost be installed everywhere and generate power for you right here in the Philippines. Others prefer it ground-mounted while others on their rooftops.

Solar vs. Wind

Solar panels on top of a rooftop in the Philippines

It is definitely more complicated to install a wind turbine in an urban area compared to solar panels. The wind is also more location-sensitive. On the other hand, most areas nationwide are exposed to the sun, and sunny days are even more common and predictable compared to windy days here in the Philippines.

And it’s for Every Juan

Top shot of solar panels on opposing sides of a brown roof

Solar is definitely more scalable thus giving more opportunity to small scale people who cannot build their own wind or geothermal farm to achieve sustainable energy. It is also much easier for people to install their own solar at their own property, generate their own energy, and get savings.

Solar is Low Maintenance

Two rows of solar panels on top of a roof

Solar panels only require cleaning once or twice a year with soap and running water. They are really low maintenance and only require annual checking to see if your system is running at its full potential. It is also stationary, which means there is a low possibility of damage that can be caused compared to moving parts for operation.

With solar, you can never run out of options, especially now that the costs are lower compared to years ago. On top of that, the market is thriving.

IN THE WAR AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE, IS SOLAR THE SOLUTION?

A strong storm with lightning in the raging sea

All this talk about climate change

A sign welcoming you to the storm struck village of Yolanda in the Philippines

The world’s leading climate experts claim that we only have approximately 11 years to reverse climate change. Yes, that is just a little over one decade – which means time is literally running out. So now what? What role can renewable energy play? Renewable energy solutions that are available in today’s market are now easier, smarter, and cheaper than they had been in previous years. What is the best way to save the planet, then? The answer can be really simple: one solar rooftop at a time.

When is the right time?

The world population is asking and debating about the right time to maximize our renewable energy resources. The time is now. Why? There are massive widespread catastrophes. There are coral reef issues, wildfires, natural disasters, and conflicts over food, water, and land. The time is now because of the urgency behind it and the need to avoid catastrophe. The human population needs to use renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy. In this day and age, the world derives about 20% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Before the 11-year timeline is up, however, the world needs to increase that figure to at least 67%, in order to reduce our carbon footprint, keep this planet clean, safe, and healthy, and to avoid a global-scale environmental disaster.

And now there’s solar

Top view of solar panels in a field

Solar solutions are now easily and readily available, plus they are more affordable, especially with the recent developments in solar technology. The solar industry is fast booming, and this has propelled solar to become the best economic choice in terms of renewable energy solutions in the Philippines.

For Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp., climate change is a global issue that is beyond economic and environmental saving. “The figures are clear. The demand for sustainable energy is increasing, and the availability is low. Believe it or not, this is a crisis. We need to generate clean power and solar is the solution, because the entire planet has access to the sun.”

Solaric Vice President Jade De Guzman adds, “That’s why now is the time. It’s not a question of building infrastructure but instead, of maximizing infrastructure. We have rooftops readily available all over the country. It’s time we use them to capture the sun’s energy so that we can utilize clean, sustainable and renewable power. That is our mission, ultimately, to turn on the sun for everyone, starting right here at home in the Philippines.”

See how easy, convenient and affordable it is for you to turn on the sun with Solaric.

INTEGRATING DESIGN FOR A FUTURE SOLAR BUILD

INTEGRATING DESIGN FOR A FUTURE SOLAR BUILD

The trend of going green

With the increasing awareness of climate change and global warming, people are starting to look for green alternatives. From using eco bags and switching to metal and wooden straws, many are looking for ways on how to make a positive contribution and lessen their negative impact on the environment – thus, the concept of planning, designing, and building your green home. Going green is the new trend!

Designing green homes is not foreign to our ears. A lot of people are not just referring to green homes by building it with recyclable or eco-friendly materials – green homes also refer to houses that are designed to be environmentally self-sustainable. This includes homes that use and maximize sustainable sources of energy.

What solar-ready actually means

What solar-ready actually means

Usually, the homeowners approach the architects and contractors because they want to “go solar.” Incorporating solar-ready design in homes can help lessen construction costs in the long run by reducing the need for future upgrades. Home and building designs can be upgraded today to maximize the potential of solar installations. This makes the future solar system more cost-effective and feasible.

The concept of a solar-ready home, building, or facility refers to designing and building an establishment that is built and equipped in a way that solar technology can easily be integrated when the owner decides to have one. This optimizes the installation of solar after the establishment is constructed. This would also make the solar installation easier and more ready to install in case the client has a tight budget and doesn’t allow the installation of the PV system at the current time.

How do you design a solar-ready home?

There are several factors to consider when designing a solar-ready home, building, or facility. In taking the following elements into consideration, you can be ensured that your system will be more efficient.

  1. Building shape and structure
  2. Roof type, plane, orientation, tilt
  3. Solar system type
  4. Shading
  5. Spacing availability for conduits
  6. Plumbing fixtures, skylights, etc.
  7. Electrical wiring condition
  8. Tapping point area
  9. Structural assessment
  10. Mounting structure and racking system

THE SHIFT TO RENEWABLES

THE SHIFT TO RENEWABLES

Let’s talk about power plants

Electricity is the most exciting form of energy that human beings have discovered so far. Power plant boilers, steam turbines, and generators are three driving forces in a power station. The power plant boiler is the primary source of steam in most utility and industrial facilities.

Yet the fact remains

Yet the fact remains

With the power of common electricity comes the other half of the story. Did you know that burning tons of coal is needed in order to power a plant boiler so as to produce electricity? In the earlier days, this cause-effect action-reaction fact was inconsequential. Now, however, we are experiencing the by-products of fossil fuel power plant operation. We now have to consider long-term global consequences.

The science behind fossil fuel combustion

Fossil fuel power plant operation results in by-products. The combustion of fossil fuels results in gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapor. Such substances are pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. Coal-fired plants result in mercury, fly ash, and other traces of metals. Imagine all these elements discharged into the air that we breathe. Now, carbon dioxide and other pollution in the air are what lead to the ozone layer depletion or the gradual thinning of the upper atmosphere of the earth’s surface. Due to various human activities, the chemical compounds that contain gas released to the air is what causes climate change. The result? Humans suffering in extreme temperatures.

Then there’s climate change

They say 2019 really is the hottest year in recorded human history. Yes, the last four years were the hottest years in terms of global temperature records. This validates ongoing, continuing, long-term climate change. Yes, there is in fact an urgent need to address global warming and climate change. The planet is experiencing increased temperatures and extreme weather conditions, including more constant natural disasters. The sea ice cover is melting in the Arctic and Antarctica. The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctic are getting smaller. This is the reality of 2019. What will happen in the coming years?

What now?

The global goal is to reduce or eradicate greenhouse gases. How? Renewable energy. Make that shift to renewable energy in order to reduce carbon footprint, reduce waste, reduce gas emissions, and steer the planet towards a clean, safe, healthy, and sustainable future. Solar is in high demand because it is a strong power source that everyone can utilize. Using photovoltaics, the sun’s energy is converted to electricity.

What you can do about it

What you can do about it

Everyone can take part in saving the environment. Simply investing in rooftop solar is already one surefire way to protect the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

“It is time for serious changes for the sake of the next generation,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. “We need to take global warming and climate change seriously. We need to go to battle and the only way to come through is to shift to a sustainable lifestyle with renewable energy.”

ROOFTOP SOLAR: PROS AND CONS

ROOFTOP SOLAR: PROS AND CONS

Weighing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Rooftop Solar

The science behind rooftop solar

The science behind rooftop solar

The sun is known to be a powerful source of energy, having provided light and heat for thousands of years, shining energy that can be harnessed by installing solar panels on the rooftop. Fact tidbit: The energy that the sun provides our planet for one hour can fulfill the global energy needs of the planet for one year. This is why solar is now a very hot topic and is the most trending energy in renewables. It has a wide range of benefits and advantages, especially when compared to other sources of energy. Let us look closely and determine if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The Advantages of Solar

The Advantages of Solar

  • Use a clean, safe, healthy, sustainable and renewable energy source

This is the most crucial and most important fact about solar. It is available daily every time the sun is out, and we will not run out of sunlight for at least another 5 billion years.

  • Pay lower electricity costs

No matter which part of the world you live in, if you go solar, you will harvest the sun’s energy whenever the sun is out. As a result, you will use less power from the grid, and this translates to lower electricity expenses. The size of your solar panel system will determine how much savings you will experience. Additionally, if you go solar with a grid-tie system, you can get credited for the excess power generated by your system. This power, which is exported to the grid, will translate to even more savings.

  • Protect the planet

When you are on solar, you will be using power from a clean energy source. This means you will not be contributing to the burning of fossil fuels. In other words, this means you will have a lower carbon footprint. In essence, you are helping the rest of the world battle climate change and global warming with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In simple words, you are helping to save and protect the planet.

The Disadvantages of Solar

The Disadvantages of Solar

  • Cost

In the past, purchasing a solar panel system was expensive. Equipment prices were high and typically included: solar panels, batteries, inverters, wires, installation, and more. Now, however, with further advancements in solar technologies, other types of systems have become more popular and batteries are no longer necessary in grid-tie systems. Solar panel prices have dropped down dramatically. This has paved the way for much lower costs of solar systems, making it more financially and economically feasible to purchase one outright.

  • Storage is still expensive

As mentioned, batteries are expensive, and they are required for energy storage. In power-starved areas or in areas where grid power supply is intermittent, then off-grid systems or hybrid systems are more ideal. In such cases, batteries are required in order to store solar energy that cannot be collected during the night time. The prices of batteries have not decreased, despite increased demand in the market today.

  • Solar systems take up space and are heavy

Naturally, solar panels take up space and weigh about 20 kilograms each. Rooftop solar will only be ideal if the structural assessment of the roof is considered and recommended as viable.

Now that advantages vs. disadvantages have been explored, it is evident that the advantages of solar far outweigh the disadvantages in terms of substance and long-term results. Think about the benefits and the future generation.

HOW SOLAR AND RENEWABLES CAN SAVE THE CLIMATE

HOW SOLAR AND RENEWABLES CAN SAVE THE CLIMATE

What’s up with carbon emissions?

What’s up with carbon emissions?

Carbon dioxide emissions are usually associated with and caused by the burning of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. Globally this year, carbon emissions hit 415 parts per million. This rate of carbon emissions would mean that the atmospheric carbon will be catastrophic in less than 15 years. The entire world is now already experiencing the effects of such, including the Philippines. We are now finally understanding that the effects include hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, and more devastating typhoons and natural disasters.

What can we do?

“Given our environmental predicament, I think it’s crucial for the Philippines to start investing aggressively in climate adaptation and to adjust responsibly to changes caused by climate change and global warming,” said Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

Adaptation or mitigation?

Adaptation or mitigation?

According to Wikipedia, the top five nations with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in the year 2017 were China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan. They will need to make that big switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. It is clear that adaptation comes hand in hand with mitigation because we need to reduce the carbon footprint of the planet.

What now?

Unfortunately, despite global efforts and even the Paris Agreement, fossil fuels still account for more than 2/3 of the world’s energy requirements. Even worse, carbon emission continues to increase because of increased fossil fuel consumption. Despite these facts and globally available updates, coal plant capacity is set to expand in various parts of the world, including the Philippines, which wants to double coal plant capacity.

“It is in the interest of our country to put her foot down and start implementing real action steps towards a clean, safe, and sustainable future. The good news is that solar is now widely available in the mainstream. The cost is competitive and within the same range of the cost of fossil fuel sources,” added De Guzman.
