SOLAR FOR BUSINESS OR SOLAR FOR HOME USE?

Flat lay of solar home plans with materials around it

The power of the sun is for everyone

Is there a difference between solar for business and solar for homes?

The roof of a car dealership with solar panels

There are residential solar projects, which are for homes. There are also commercial solar projects, which are for businesses. By comparison, both types of solar projects differ in terms of costs, size or scale, and renewable energy goals. Residential solar is typically installed by homeowners who are looking to reduce their monthly electricity expenses and generate significant money savings. On the other hand, commercial solar requires a major business decision and investment with a primary focus on the long-term financial and environmental impact.

How much does residential solar typically cost in the Philippines?

Top view of a house with solar roofing

There is no simple, uniform answer to this question because there really is no such thing as an average typical solar panel system. Solar systems are customized for every home or household. The size of the solar system will depend on a variety of factors such as roof size, power consumption, electricity expenses, sun exposure, roof type, and even budget. However, there is data that shows that the most commonly purchased solar panel system size in the Philippines is the 5kWp Grid Tie Solar. Let us examine this type of solar solution.

Let’s go 5kWp

A green roof with solar panels

If the homeowner were to choose the cheapest type of solar panels available in today’s market, then he would select the basic option, which would be the 270-watt (270W) polycrystalline solar panels. The homeowner would then opt for 20 pieces of the 270W solar modules, which would be equivalent to a solar system size of 5.4 kWp (kilowatt peak).

Savings and Return On Investment

Top of a gasoline station with solar panels

The average statistic per solar panel is an average monthly savings of Php400. With that in mind, 20 panels, or a 5kWp system, would give you savings of about Php8,000 each month. Now let’s break it down in terms of numbers and ROI. The system cost of a 5.4kWp is about Php380,000. If monthly savings is Php8,000, then ROI will be achieved in four years.

“It’s 2020 and we are now on the brink of a renewable decade. Solar tech is affordable and financially feasible. The demand is high. Everyone is getting on board. It is not just about being a “wise investment” choice – it’s also about being a “combat climate change” choice. This decade isn’t about just savings and ROI anymore. It’s about carbon footprint and the environmental impact and climate change. In essence, solar isn’t about us and efficiency anymore. It’s about our planet’s future,” said Jade De Guzman, the Vice President of Solaric, the recognized leader in the solar rooftop in the Philippines.

TURNING ON THE SUN FOR PTT

Close up of a hand putting gas in their car

What happens when you add Solaric and gasoline?

The world has to go into energy transition as it is the new economic fact and survival. Climate change is already our new reality and mankind has to take steps to mitigate climate change and global warming. When oil companies start putting in large amounts of Solar and even question outdated regulation that limits the amount of renewable energy, it is clearly telling of our times now – what the future brings and the challenges that we face to adapt to the new world.

The oil and gas industry has one of the most stringent safety and workflow standards in any workplace. They also employ the smartest engineers who know energy output, per kWh costs, project safety, and a number of quantifiable and qualitative goals that have to be achieved for seamless project implementation.

Solaric and PTT

A gasoline station with solar panels

We thank PTT for choosing us to undertake their pioneer project in combining #Solar to their gas stations to improve their carbon footprint and lower costs of operations. This powers their Barista training school and skills center in EDSA. Gas pumps and espresso machines are surprisingly power-hungry appliances.

PTT deployed a 15.6kWp solution that can yield about 20MWh of energy a year or roughly P220k in savings by sourcing a large amount of power from the sun, versus predominantly grid-bought coal energy. Simple fact: A single solar panel has the power potential to knock off P400 a month from your electric bill.

In the very near future, gas stations will slowly be adapting to Electric Vehicle charging stations. PTT decided to embrace the future and start the process of transformation to a greener economy and energy solution space.

HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS ARE NEEDED TO RUN A HOUSE?

The roof of a house with solar panels overlooking its village

The decision to put solar on the rooftop

Top view of a dark roof of a house with solar panels

Some people take months to decide. Some people take years. It is, after all, a major decision when you have to finally consider your previously bare roof to be adorned with a string of blue or black solar panels. This is particularly true if you are especially concerned with the aesthetics of your home or your roof and its visibility from the road. It is, however, a matter of perspective. Some people view a bare roof as beautiful. Others, however, regard a solarized roof as the epitome of beauty. To each his own.

What is the essence of its power?

A sun shining on a field

Every panel can generate a certain number of watts per hour from the rays of the sun. Every day, here in the Philippines, we average at least 4.5 hours of sunshine. With one 400-watt solar panel, we can harvest at least 1.8 kW of power each day. Imagine 10 panels. Imagine 50 panels. What does this translate to? It means that during the day, our household appliances can be directly powered by electricity generated by these solar panels, using energy harvested from the sun. It means that our roof, in the past decades, was just an adorning structure that sheltered us from heat and rain. Now, we have learned to make our rooftops more beneficial for us, by converting it into a quiet small power plant for a few hours each day, whenever the sun is out. This translates to savings each day, each month. In other words, installing an ideal sized rooftop solar system for your home will result in a 30% to 70% reduction in your monthly electric bill.

But wait, there’s more

Extreme top shot of a house with solar panels

Why is the monthly electric bill reduction a wide range between 30% to 70%? There are several factors that come into play: solar panel system size, type and brand of panels, roof tilt or angle, sun exposure, and net metering if the system is a grid-tie system, among other factors. With net metering, all excess power harvested during the day is exported to the grid in exchange for credits. This results in a lower monthly bill.

“2019 prices are already cheaper. Let’s see what 2020 will bring. At the moment, the typical 5.4 kWp grid-tie solar system costs about P380,000 – using polycrystalline panels. At this rate, going solar is now affordable. Some people think it’s too big a commitment, but I think it’s our perspective that needs to change. Instead of viewing it as an expense, maybe we need to view it as an investment,” emphasizes Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

ZERO BILL: THE FERRARI OF SOLAR BUILDS

A table with papers on top of it, an example of a solar panel, and a cardboard house

Ever dreamed of not paying a single peso on your monthly electric bill?

Good news! It is definitely not a dream anymore because at Solaric, we make it possible.

What exactly is a #ZeroBill?

A zero electricity bill

A zero bill is simply what it says: your monthly electric bill is a zero. In other words, in that section where your balance due is indicated, the amount is exactly Php0.00.

Is it actually possible?

Close up of a zero electricity bill

Sometimes, homeowners are interested in going solar and they install a small-sized system or an average-sized system (in relation to their monthly power consumption). Their monthly electric bills decrease from 30% to 75%, and they are thrilled. There are some homeowners, however, that decide to install an extra-large solar panel system. This is what is referred to as the Zero Bill Build. When a homeowner installs a system three times the power production than their home’s power consumption, then the obvious result is that their solar offsets their daytime consumption. All the surplus power produced by their system is exported to the grid. The combination of these factors results in a zero or negative utility bill.

Making the choice

Drone shot of a white rooftop full of solar panels

Some people purchase a car for convenience, or for affordability, or for efficiency. Such individuals will be seen in sedans or SUVs. Other people buy expensive cars, because they can, and because they know exactly what they want – and that’s where the pay-off lies. In the same way, a zero bill build system will be much more expensive. It will take up all your roof space. But imagine not paying a cent on your electric bill in the long run, how fulfilling can that be? That is its pay-off.

Net metering comes to play

Top shot of a rooftop with solar panels

With a grid-tie system, a zero bill is not possible if you don’t apply for a net metering program with Meralco or your utility company. Through this program, you don’t only offset your daytime loads but also the night time loads. The tactic is to sell so much excess energy to the utility company that the credits you earn will offset your evening consumption.

A consumer and a provider

A rooftop with solar panels on one side

Going solar means you get to generate your own power. You use this harvested power for your daily needs and the bonus is you get to provide power for others while getting paid for exporting power. We constantly get yellow and red alerts which means there is an insufficient supply of power on our grid. Our population continues to grow thus the demand for power increases.

“We must continue to explore other sources of energy. Long gone are those days when we need to depend on coal and other non-renewable sources,” said Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp. “The Philippines is blessed with the free, unlimited and abundant source of the sun’s energy. It’s clean, safe, sustainable and will continue to be accessible for the next 5 billion years – more than enough to pay for the system with a typical ROI of 5 years! Why waste it? It’s time to turn on the sun.”

SOLAR: YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCE

Top shot of solar panels on a roof

It is the most practical option out thereTwo rows of solar panels on each side of a roof's tip

Deciding to invest in renewable energy for your property means that you are considering saving money on your monthly electric bills and reducing your carbon footprint for the environment. Alongside it comes the research of finding and weighing the best renewable energy option that is right for you.

The Sunny Philippines

Solaric solar panels on a green rooftop

In a tropical country like the Philippines, we are very lucky to be abundant with the sun’s energy. With proper space, orientation, and sunlight, solar panels can almost be installed everywhere and generate power for you right here in the Philippines. Others prefer it ground-mounted while others on their rooftops.

Solar vs. Wind

Solar panels on top of a rooftop in the Philippines

It is definitely more complicated to install a wind turbine in an urban area compared to solar panels. The wind is also more location-sensitive. On the other hand, most areas nationwide are exposed to the sun, and sunny days are even more common and predictable compared to windy days here in the Philippines.

And it’s for Every Juan

Top shot of solar panels on opposing sides of a brown roof

Solar is definitely more scalable thus giving more opportunity to small scale people who cannot build their own wind or geothermal farm to achieve sustainable energy. It is also much easier for people to install their own solar at their own property, generate their own energy, and get savings.

Solar is Low Maintenance

Two rows of solar panels on top of a roof

Solar panels only require cleaning once or twice a year with soap and running water. They are really low maintenance and only require annual checking to see if your system is running at its full potential. It is also stationary, which means there is a low possibility of damage that can be caused compared to moving parts for operation.

With solar, you can never run out of options, especially now that the costs are lower compared to years ago. On top of that, the market is thriving.

“I SPEND THIS MUCH ON MY MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL. WHAT IS THE BEST SYSTEM FOR ME?”

Top view of a house with solar on its rooftop

Our initial recommendation

A team installing solar on a rooftop

We can assume first that your monthly electric bill reflects power consumption that translates to 50% daytime consumption. From there, we can give you a ballpark figure of the recommended system plus the initial cost.

The right system size

Solar on a rooftop

For electric bills that range from Php1,000 pesos to Php3,000, we can recommend a 540Wp system that costs around Php60,000 or a 1.62kWp that costs Php128,000. Costs quoted in this article are for GI sheet roofs using polycrystalline solar panels.

For electric bills that run up to about Php5,000, we can recommend a 1.62kWp or 3.24kWp system (which costs around Php216,000). Meanwhile, for bills that range from about Php10,000, we recommend at least a 5.4kWp solar panel system, which costs around Php340,000. For bills higher than that, the minimum recommended would be a 10kWp system, which costs roughly Php670,000.

Your daytime appliances

Top wide view of a white roof filled with solar panel systems

Are you a heavy aircon user or do you use only lights and electric fans during the daytime? Using light loads during the daytime like your refrigerator, television, lights and electric fan may only require a smaller system while using an aircon during the daytime will immediately put your recommended system into 1kWp and above.

The final recommendation is dependent on the results of the site survey
There are numerous factors that can affect the final system that is best for you. We have issues of roof space, type of roof, daytime appliances, roof layout, shading, and other external factors, that determine what type of solar panel system you should install. Engineers and solar experts are the ones that conduct site surveys. They go to your house or business, examine your roof and structure, your electricals, your monthly bills, and learn about your typical power consumption. From all these factors, they then prepare a solar photovoltaic (PV) system layout and a site survey report. At Solaric, we offer free site surveys within Metro Manila. This is a very critical first step in the journey to turning on the sun.

After the site survey

Close up of a rooftop full of solar panels

Upon completion of the site survey report and layout, solar experts then recommend the solar panel system that is most ideal for your home or business. No two homes or businesses are exactly the same. Having tailor-made recommendations and solutions based on the information that you will give us and the site study of our engineer will ensure that you have the perfect system suitable for you. Solaric provides customized, integrated solutions that are designed to address the specific needs of each individual client.

IN THE WAR AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE, IS SOLAR THE SOLUTION?

A strong storm with lightning in the raging sea

All this talk about climate change

The world’s leading climate experts claim that we only have approximately 11 years to reverse climate change. Yes, that is just a little over one decade – which means time is literally running out. So now what? What role can renewable energy play? Renewable energy solutions that are available in today’s market are now easier, smarter, and cheaper than they had been in previous years. What is the best way to save the planet, then? The answer can be really simple: one solar rooftop at a time.

When is the right time?

The world population is asking and debating about the right time to maximize our renewable energy resources. The time is now. Why? There are massive widespread catastrophes. There are coral reef issues, wildfires, natural disasters, and conflicts over food, water, and land. The time is now because of the urgency behind it and the need to avoid catastrophe. The human population needs to use renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, hydropower, and geothermal energy. In this day and age, the world derives about 20% of its electricity from renewable energy sources. Before the 11-year timeline is up, however, the world needs to increase that figure to at least 67%, in order to reduce our carbon footprint, keep this planet clean, safe, and healthy, and to avoid a global-scale environmental disaster.

And now there’s solar

Solar solutions are now easily and readily available, plus they are more affordable, especially with the recent developments in solar technology. The solar industry is fast booming, and this has propelled solar to become the best economic choice in terms of renewable energy solutions in the Philippines.

For Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp., climate change is a global issue that is beyond economic and environmental saving. “The figures are clear. The demand for sustainable energy is increasing, and the availability is low. Believe it or not, this is a crisis. We need to generate clean power and solar is the solution, because the entire planet has access to the sun.”

Solaric Vice President Jade De Guzman adds, “That’s why now is the time. It’s not a question of building infrastructure but instead, of maximizing infrastructure. We have rooftops readily available all over the country. It’s time we use them to capture the sun’s energy so that we can utilize clean, sustainable and renewable power. That is our mission, ultimately, to turn on the sun for everyone, starting right here at home in the Philippines.”

See how easy, convenient and affordable it is for you to turn on the sun with Solaric.

IS SOLAR FOR A LIFETIME?

A repair man walking in between solar panels

If you are thinking of having solar on your roof,

probably one of the questions you are asking is:

would it last for a lifetime?

Lifespan and Quality

Solar panels have a maximum lifespan of 25 years output guarantee and the maximum lifespan of Inverters is 12 years. Not all panels are the same so it is important to remember that the brand will also play a factor in terms of lifespan. High-quality panels are expected to perform beyond 25 years while the use of low-quality equipment and materials can result in system under-performance and frequent failures.

Here in Solaric, we offer “no-nonsense” warranties, which means we honor our warranties locally and even have service units to swap out with, so you have very minimal downtime should something ever go wrong. We offer a 10-year to 25-year manufacturer’s warranty for solar panels (depending on the brand) and a 5-year warranty for inverters. We only cater globally recognized, top quality Tier 1 equipment and brands.

What happens to my panels after 25 years?

Once your solar system reaches 25 years, it does not necessarily mean that it’s dead and not functional. Your system would still work adequately but bear in mind that panels may have degraded over time thus resulting in a 10 to 20% reduction in efficiency and harvest. Solar panels will continue to work as long as they are not physically damaged through major external forces.

How can I extend the life of my system?

Since Grid-Tie System has no battery, just the regular maintenance (cleaning) of solar panels is highly recommended. It is also best to avoid physical damages like avoiding growing trees and bushes that, once blown by the wind, may create scratches on your panels. The more surface damages your panels have, the greater the performance degradation. Annual maintenance and routine assessment by a solar company expert will be sufficient in ensuring the optimal performance of your solar panel system.
