SOLAR SOILING OR DUST ACCUMULATION: HOW DOES IT AFFECT MY SOLAR SYSTEM?

Accumulated dust and debris on a solar panel

In order to function to its maximum efficiency, your solar panels need to be exposed to sunlight as much as possible. However, there are numerous factors that affect its performance such as system design, temperature, up to external or environmental factors like solar irradiance and soiling (also known as dust accumulation). What is solar soiling and how does it affect your system?

Solar soiling in a nutshell

Solar soiling

Aside from how the system is designed, shading plays an important factor in your solar system’s efficiency. A small shaded part of your panels can contribute a lot to system loss. Normally, we only think about the big factors that can cause shadings, such as trees, vents, and nearby establishments, but we also need to watch out for the dust and grime that can accumulate on the panel’s surface over time. The accumulated dust and dirt particles on a solar panel are what is commonly referred to as solar soiling.

It’s all around you

Taal Volcano Ash on a home's rooftop

Numerous environmental factors can cause dust to accumulate such as volcanic eruption – like the recent Taal volcano activity, soil and salt deposition, and air pollution. The accumulated dust instigates the soiling effect. Soiling blocks the amount of light that your panels harvest which causes a drop in power production. Not only that, but soiling can also cause hot spots. Higher temperatures hamper power production, which can also cause energy losses and cell degradation over time. Expect that the reduced power output and losses in savings will continue until you get your solar panels cleaned.

Maintenance is key

Clean and maintained solar panels

A solar system does not require intricate and detailed maintenance. “For solar systems situated in places with everyday traffic such as EDSA or C5, frequent monitoring and cleaning is recommended,” says Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp. “Dust intensity can vary from place to place. Cities in Metro Manila are of course more susceptible to pollution compared to the provinces, so the dirt and dust accumulate faster in the metro.”

Prolonged dust accumulation, accompanied by rain and humid weather, will cause the dust particles to harden – otherwise referred to as cementing, which makes it harder to remove. These cemented particles can become irremovable and cause permanent damage and deterioration in the solar module. Never underestimate these small particles as they could eventually cause big problems in the long run.

DO YOU NEED A SMILE?

A house illuminated with the power of solar

Do you need batteries for Solar?

They say solar is now booming in the Philippines, and solar energy capacity is expected to double in the next five years. With the solar industry being a very dynamic market, there are numerous factors that impact solar in countries all over the world: economy, technology, fossil fuel costs, crisis, and more. Since solar is a clean, free, and can produce power whenever the sun is shining, energy storage makes sense – for times when the sun is not shining.

In Metro Manila, where grid power is relatively stable and consistent, energy storage is not a necessity. Grid tie systems work efficiently in the Metro, coupled with net metering, where excess power produced by the solar panel system is exported to the grid in exchange for credits.

What about power-starved areas?

Solar powers on top of a house in a province

On the other hand, for far-flung cities or provinces where grid power is unstable, or non-existent, energy storage may be the only sensible solution. Energy storage allows the solar system to supply power at night time, and for times when there is no grid power.

Solar batteries

There are two main types of solar batteries: lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries. Lead-acid batteries are like those used in cars. Lithium-ion batteries are more advanced, last longer, safer, and require less maintenance. As a result, lithium batteries are also more expensive. Since 2012, the cost of lithium batteries has dropped more than 50%. This trend is good news for 2020 because it means installing off-grid or hybrid systems is now affordable and cost-competitive. With batteries, you can turn on your own residential or commercial power plants during times of peak demand.

Does it make sense to use batteries for residential solar systems?

A man and his solar provider agreeing to install it into his home

Majority of homeowners in Metro Manila opt for grid tie solar systems with net metering because it is like having a “virtual battery”, wherein the utility company gets the surplus power from your system and credits your electric bill. This plays a critical role in lowering monthly electric bills and it works well in maximizing the solar investment. However, as we move on to times where pandemics and disasters are occurring more often, people are now becoming aware of the importance of preparedness. Homeowners are now wanting the reliability and assurance of solar systems with battery storage for power, especially during grid outages, emergencies, or natural disasters. These are the people who want the redundancy and the reliability of instant backup power that a battery can provide during power outages. They also want to maximize excess solar harvest by storing them in batteries for evening consumption.

Why lithium is the right choice

Lithium Batteries are part of our technological toolbox as we have clients who ask for their capabilities. Batteries are needed if you need your solar set up to run during a power outage. Batteries provide a buffer when the sun is not enough and loads have to be supplied with sustained energy. Batteries are starting to get common in upscale households who are building new homes without a diesel generator and having things backed up with what is now referred to as a Mega Solaric UPS. At Solaric, we have installed hundreds of setups with batteries for consumers and even fulfilled military contracts around the world with our battery tech. We have installed batteries for solar systems that power mission-critical communication systems. We’ve designed custom systems that run entire islands and radar facilities, even in places with no diesel, no oil, no grid.

Time to smile

SMILE Lithium battery hybrid system

For residential jobs, we have been putting out Lithium-based batteries since 2016. The SMILE Lithium battery hybrid system is a European-design award-winning battery and is very popular in countries where the government actually pays the consumer to put in batteries to help manage the grid. This choice is becoming popular fast because it’s a smart system that detects the excess power and diverts it proportionately to battery charging. It also detects if the entire house is starting to use grid power and proportionately discharges the battery, keeping grid power consumption to zero until the batteries run out. In times of calamities or power outages, it can supply a steady flow of critical loads until the batteries run out, and then get recharged by the sun the next day. The SMILE solution is beneficial and self-sustaining – especially for those who are now focused on preparedness. These are systems installed and requested by those who are serious about planning for major earthquakes, typhoons, emergencies, pandemics, disasters, or dealing with areas with poor power availability.

Battery-based systems are more complex beasts. They cost about 40% to 70% more than our popular battery-less grid tie systems but offer a 10-year warranty.

“Yes, there is a price for peace – the price of having power in your house after a major storm, of having power during a blackout or earthquake. That in itself is priceless for most,” says Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp.

IT’S ALMOST SUMMER: WHY GO SOLAR NOW?

TOP SHOT OF A HOUSE WITH SOLAR ROOFING

It’s 2020 and the cost of electricity keeps soaring. Now that it is almost summer, power security is in distress once again. With the higher temperatures of the summer months comes the higher demand for electricity. Hence the question: is this a good time to go solar?

The answer is YES, and here are the reasons why:

SAVE MONEY

A man saving money after budgeting

Save money by reducing your monthly expenses on electric bills. Whether you are a homeowner or a business owner, investing your money in solar means that you are wise enough to make your money work for you. In fact, this is the number one reason why people install solar panel systems on the rooftops of their residential and commercial properties. One solar panel on your roof can reduce at least 400 pesos from your electric bill. Generally, a typical solar system can last for more than 25 years. That is the power output guarantee. When is it a good time to save money? Now.

PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT

HANDS HOLDING A GLOBE PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT

The future is all about clean and renewable energy, such as solar. Why? Going renewable is one definite way to reduce your carbon footprint. By going solar, you depend less on conventional sources of energy such as fossil fuels, which cause pollution.
A typical Solaric system eliminates more than four tons of carbon emissions each year, which is equivalent to planting 50 trees each year. Installing your own solar system makes you a power producer using a clean and safe energy source – therefore contributing to a more sustainable future for generations to come. When it is a good time to protect the environment? Now.

CONTRIBUTE TO THE GRID

Generating your own power through solar makes your home an energy plant. With net metering, the excess energy of your system is exported to the grid, which helps contribute to the grid especially during the peak months wherein we have a thin supply of power and experience yellow to red alerts. When is it a good time to contribute to a power-starved grid? Now.

INCREASE YOUR PROPERTY VALUE

Cardboard cut out of rising property value

As a lot of people become more educated with the importance of renewable energy, demands for home using clean energy increases. In fact, a lot of homeowners now opt to plan ahead to incorporate solar into the design of their home to maximize its space and potential. Solarized homes are today’s trend. When is it a good time to increase your property value? Now.

BLACK AND BLUE PANELS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Blue solar panels on top of a home's roof

Ever wondered why some panels are colored blue and some black? The colors are not chosen by manufacturers for aesthetic purposes. It all comes down to how solar panels are manufactured. Let’s take a look at the different types of solar panels and why they carry those colors.

It starts with the silicon

Solar panels on a rooftop

Solar is highly made out of Silicon (Si), a semiconductor material that is the second most abundant element on Earth and is used in a multitude of applications, commonly for electronic components. Silicon has a touch of blue in color which explains why most of the solar panels look blue in color.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Numerous silicon crystals are used to make the more common polycrystalline solar panels which are also known for its blue color. The nature of how polycrystalline panels are produced is the reason why it is cheaper to manufacture and popular because of its low cost and wider availability.

The blue color of a polycrystalline panel is a side-effect of the silicon crystals reflecting light and the anti-reflective coating the panels undergo to improve its absorbing capacity and efficiency. One disadvantage of the polycrystalline is that it is less efficient compared to its counterpart (the monocrystalline panel), which is due to the number of silicon crystals that make up the solar cell causing a limited space for photons to travel through.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline panels are more intricate and complicated to produce since it uses silicon with a high level of purity and is aligned in one orientation, creating one silicon crystal in each solar cell. The tedious process of how monocrystalline panels are produced is one reason why it is more expensive. The darker color observed in monocrystalline panels is caused by how the light interacts with its silicon layer.

Which is the better: blue or black panels?

Road signs pointing in different directions

The efficiency of solar panels does not rely on aesthetics but on scientific reasons. The black naturally absorbs more light than the color blue, thus causing more space for the photons to travel through in each solar cell. Due to how they were produced, polycrystalline and monocrystalline panels do not just differ in the physical sense but they also offer different benefits and disadvantages. Monocrystalline has higher efficiency but will definitely cost more, while Polycrystalline is cheaper. If you are limited by roof space and you’re looking for more highly efficient solar panels or simply opting for aesthetics, you may want to consider having a monocrystalline panel for your system. If you are on a tight budget, have ample roof space, and prefer a lower price, polycrystalline might be your best option.

The Zero Bill Trend and What It Is All About

ZERO BILL HOUSE IN CAVITE: If you need us to build you the legendary zero bill solar panel system or want to learn how to start a potent solar setup, give us a call at 09178603141, 09083775577, 75040092, or email us at info@solaric.com.ph. Let’s get you started on your ZERO BILL journey!

What is a ZeroBill home?

An asian man worried about his electricity bill

A “Zero Bill” home is a household with an electric bill of Php0.00 each month. This is also referred to as a net-home or a zero-energy building – and it means it produces as much power as it consumes, making it very financially lucrative. Such homes or businesses create their energy through renewable sources such as solar.

What’s the difference between regular houses?

A globe of the Earth surrounded by smoke pollution

Regular homes that are not utilizing renewable sources of energy are largely dependent on fossil fuels. Conventional electrical grid power contributes significantly to climate problems we are experiencing globally today.

Going zero

A lightbulb with a plant growing inside of it

When you use solar to provide electricity using solar panels, it is extremely cost-effective plus you help protect the environment. Since solar equipment and energy costs have drastically decreased over the course of the last decade, solar is considered to be one of the cheapest sources of power available today.

Grid Tie and Zero Bill

Representation of renewable energy

People often ask if it’s possible to have a grid tie AND get a zero bill. Having a grid-tie solar panel system means that your home’s solar is linked to your utility provider, otherwise referred to as the electrical grid. This is the most common type of solar energy system in Metro Manila – because power from the grid is relatively stable and this setup does not require batteries. With a grid tie system, you can apply for Net Metering with your utility company, wherein excess power generated by the solar panels is exported to the grid. That exported power is credited to you and results in reducing your electric bill. When you earn credits that are more than the power you consume, then the result is a #ZeroBill.

FACTORS THAT LIMIT SOLAR PRODUCTION

Graphics of light bulbs

Having a large roof space can be an advantage when putting up a solar system since you can install a higher quantity of solar panels compared to a home with a limited roof area. However, your system does not solely depend on the capability of your solar panels. There are several internal and external factors that can also affect solar production which you may want to consider to achieve the best results for your system.

Temperature

Rooftop solar panels under the intense heat

Did you know that colder temperatures can improve and enhance the performance of your system? In fact, warmer and hotter temperatures can cause energy losses since solar power is generated using the sun’s light and not heat. These high energy levels caused by hot temperatures impede the production of power because the energy is converted into heat instead of electricity. Higher and prolonged heat exposure can also cause degradation of solar cells.

Temperature does not affect the amount of sunlight gathered by the solar panels but it affects how the energy is produced and converted inside the cells. To maintain higher efficiency, solar panels should be positioned to have a breathable space and adequate airflow to induce natural cooling.

Orientation

A solar panel installed to face the sun on a roof

To maximize solar production, solar panels should face the sun where it would receive the most sunlight all year round. For a tropical country like the Philippines, it is advisable to face the solar modules in the south. Facing it in the true south will generate the highest yield or harvest and the tilt angle can be between 10 to 40 degrees to match the local settings. Remember that the outcome and results may vary as it is a case to case basis. This is the part where your home’s geometry and location becomes an important factor. Installing the same size and system in different locations would still give you different output or yield. Consult reliable solar experts to know the best-recommended specifications for your solar system.

Shading

A solar panel blocked by shade

Having the best and premium solar panels doesn’t automatically guarantee a perfect system. External factors should be considered such as shading. Shading on a small part of the panel can have a huge impact on the performance of your system and this has something to do with how solar panels are wired. In a series wiring, a tiny shaded portion of a panel can cause the entire array to drop in solar production. Different circumstances can cause shading issues such as the changing angle of the sun throughout the whole year, trees, nearby establishments and roof obstructions such as vents and antennas.

There are instances wherein we cannot avoid these factors that’s why it is important to consult a solar expert who can properly design your system and minimize or eliminate the possibility of shading.

GRID TIE AND ZERO BILL

A Filipina holding a zero electricity bill

Is having a grid tie system installed equivalent to a zero bill?

Learn more from the solar experts!

Grid Tie System

Grid Tie System

A grid tie system is a solar energy system that is interconnected to your utility grid. This system uses solar as the “first priority” power to be used during the daytime. It is important to remember that a grid tied system doesn’t have to meet the entire power demands of the home. During cloudy days, night time or when the solar panels are not producing at full efficiency, the home can get energy from the grid.

When the grid tie system produces more power than what you consume, the excess or surplus power is exported and can be sold to the utility company via the “Net Metering” Program. The credits earned can offset your night time and weekend energy usage. This is how you can achieve the fastest ROI in the grid tie system and why it is considered the most efficient solar system. It also makes the zero bill possible!

Zero bill

Zero electricity bill

A small to average sized system is a common build for starters and homeowners who are interested in going solar. Normally, the size of their system is tailor-made to their monthly power consumption and after installing solar, their electric bills decrease from 30% to 75%. Thrilled by this phenomenon, one of our clients even said “Parang na-addict ako sa solar noong nakita ko yung menos sa kuryente, gusto kong i-zero out na yung bill ko!” Some homeowners will even expand their system to the extent of filling out their entire roof with solar panels!

It’s not hocus pocus!

A worker installing solar panels

This is not an exaggeration but a “zero bill” home is actually a household with an electric bill of Php0.00 each month. When a homeowner installs solar – three times than their recommended system, their solar production triples in amount, greatly offsetting their daytime and nighttime usage. The combining factors of surplus power exporting to the grid and greater solar power production compared to consumption results in a zero or negative utility build. This is also referred to as a net-home or a zero-energy building which creates their energy through renewable sources such as solar.

Steps to a Zero Bill

A hand turning on an energy efficient aircon

  1. Install a solar system of the biggest capacity (meaning maximize your roof space).
  2. Apply for Net Metering with your utility company (so that you can earn credits for the excess power produced by your solar system). Apply for Peak Off-Peak (POP) if you use more power at night time (so that your night-time electricity costs are cheaper than your daytime costs).
  3. Use energy-saving appliances (LED lights, aircons, etc.)

IF THE ENERGY PROBLEM EXISTS, SO MUST THE SOLUTION

The sun setting on the horizon

Every year we are plagued by power outages, especially during peak months wherein our energy supply falls in yellow and red alerts. Rotating brownouts were rampant last year and according to NGCP, it is an avoidable crisis and we do believe that there is always a solution.

The increasing population and demand for electricity without further actions will eventually lead to a serious power supply shortage. The major fall in generation capacity caused by the shutdown of power plants not only causes insufficiency in the grid’s total power supply but also causes higher electricity costs in the public’s end.

Sustainable energy for all

Solar panels on top of a roof

These recurring power outages that affect a vast number of households, businesses and day to day operations caused by dependence on an unreliable energy source all come down to the country’s need for a more stable source of energy.

In a country that is abundant with natural resources, one would always think “Bakit kulang?” The needs and demands keep on increasing but there is a lesser effort to meet and generate energy needs. Traditional answers make lesser sense wherein in today’s technology, we can invest for a more clean, efficient and ubiquitous source of energy.

Renewables may be the answer

It will take years to build more coal plants and yet installing a residential solar system that will make your own home a self-generating power plant can only take 2 to 3 days. Even the excess solar energy that is not consumed during daytime will automatically export and blend with the grid through the grid-tie system. The net metering program also allows the surplus power to be exchanged for night time credits. It’s a total win-win situation.

MAXIMIZE THE EFFICIENCY OF YOUR SOLAR PANEL SYSTEM

SOLAR EXPERTS TELL THE HOMEOWNERS AND ENTREPRENEURS HOW TO MAXIMIZE THEIR RENEWABLE INVESTMENT

Solar energy is one of the most efficient and sustainable sources of energy. A solar panel system is commonly made up of fixed and non-motor parts, which is why it is important to ensure that your system is performing efficiently and effectively – and that you are maximizing your investment in renewables.

SELECT THE MOST OPTIMAL ORIENTATION

If you are planning to install a solar panel system, it is highly advisable to avoid placing your solar panels on roof areas with shading. It is recommended that you select a solar panel company or installer that is reputable with many years of experience. Engineers should visit the site and check your roof before deciding on the best available orientation for your roof. Experts in the industry know best when recommending the system size, placement, tilt, orientation, and more. All of these are planned well beforehand and upon consultation with various professionals (engineers, electricians, solar design experts).

INVEST IN QUALITY EQUIPMENT

As the rooftop solar leader in the Philippines, Solaric always suggests various options to clients.

“We believe that we should empower our clients in making a wise investment. They should consider affordability without sacrificing quality and reliability. There is absolutely no “one size fits all” when it comes to solar. There is no small medium large. Every house or building or warehouse or facility is different. Every site survey is different. Every solution we offer our clients is unique and is customized specifically to address their roof, their consumption, their needs,” explains Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

For panels, efficiency is defined as how well a solar module converts the sun’s energy into electricity within a certain area. Higher efficiency comes with a more expensive price tag. For houses or buildings with limited roof space, panels with greater peak efficiency are highly advised compared to establishments with big and ample roof space.

CLEAN YOUR SOLAR PANELS

A dirty and dusty solar panel

Solar panels are not immune to dust, dirt, and tiny specs of debris. Just like any product, if not cleaned properly, the less useful it becomes. Dust may accumulate over time or due to natural phenomena such as the recent eruption of the Taal Volcano. It is important that you visually inspect your panels from time to time to avoid dust accumulation that may result in lesser efficiency. Solar panels do not require much maintenance. Cleaning it at least once a year with mild soap and running water will usually do the trick. It is best to call in the rooftop solar experts to do the annual maintenance cleaning because the cleaning service can come with a routine inspection of the solar equipment and performance analysis of the system. Regular maintenance will ensure that your solar panel system is performing optimally and your investment will continue to be profitable.

Ask and consult your trusted solar panel provider on how you can maximize efficiently your system.

ROOFTOP SOLAR PANEL CLEANING

Should You Clean Your Solar Panels?

Since rooftop solar panels get dirty because they are outside and exposed to endless environmental factors all day every day, then they have to be cleaned. There may be times when you wonder: should you clean your solar panels? The correct answer is: yes, if necessary.

Let’s go over various factors to consider before you clean your solar panels – or have them cleaned. These include solar panel cleaning method, weather, frequency of maintenance, cost, and safety precautions.

SOLAR PANEL CLEANING METHOD

There are a few correct ways to clean your solar panels because there are many different types and kinds of solar panels and they are all different. If you have a Solaric system, then you just have to call us and we will take care of your solar panel cleaning.

SAFETY FIRST

Dirty solar panels versus clean

Rooftops are high off the ground, so it is best to have the professional solar installers or roof experts do everything that is roof-related, for safety purposes. Ensure that the personnel comes wearing complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

WEATHER VARIATIONS

Solar energy output is indeed affected by various factors, and this includes variations in weather and climate. On a clear, bright, sunny day in the Philippines, the system’s power graph forms a bell curve. Highest energy production typically happens around noon, when the sun is brightest. These are the times when the solar panels operate most efficiently. On the other hand, during cloudy days, solar panels still do work – since the rays of the sun still find their way to shine through the clouds and the rain. However, since sunlight is limited, then it follows that energy production is limited as well. The actual amount of electricity generated during such days is dependent on the density of cloud coverage. Thus, the solar panel system’s production is not as consistent and considerably reduced during cloudy days and rainy days. Rain can add dirt to the panels but the dirt is very minimal. The rain mostly does the work of rinsing and cleaning your solar panels. When it rains, you benefit from the water falling from the sky because it is doing the work for you.

WHEN CAN YOU DO IT YOURSELF?

Before and after comparison of dirty and clean solar panels

You can clean your solar panels yourself in manageable situations, such as when the dirt or debris is mild and you can easily use a hose to clean the panels.

However, in unmanageable weather conditions, you are recommended to contact panel cleaning experts or your solar installers, and have them take care of the cleaning for you.

Otherwise, Solaric solar installers conduct annual cleaning and maintenance service for our clients’ solar panels.
