In order to function to its maximum efficiency, your solar panels need to be exposed to sunlight as much as possible. However, there are numerous factors that affect its performance such as system design, temperature, up to external or environmental factors like solar irradiance and soiling (also known as dust accumulation). What is solar soiling and how does it affect your system?

Solar soiling in a nutshell

Aside from how the system is designed, shading plays an important factor in your solar system’s efficiency. A small shaded part of your panels can contribute a lot to system loss. Normally, we only think about the big factors that can cause shadings, such as trees, vents, and nearby establishments, but we also need to watch out for the dust and grime that can accumulate on the panel’s surface over time. The accumulated dust and dirt particles on a solar panel are what is commonly referred to as solar soiling.

It’s all around you

Numerous environmental factors can cause dust to accumulate such as volcanic eruption – like the recent Taal volcano activity, soil and salt deposition, and air pollution. The accumulated dust instigates the soiling effect. Soiling blocks the amount of light that your panels harvest which causes a drop in power production. Not only that, but soiling can also cause hot spots. Higher temperatures hamper power production, which can also cause energy losses and cell degradation over time. Do you need batteries for Solar?

They say solar is now booming in the Philippines, and solar energy capacity is expected to double in the next five years. With the solar industry being a very dynamic market, there are numerous factors that impact solar in countries all over the world: economy, technology, fossil fuel costs, crisis, and more. Since solar is a clean, free, and can produce power whenever the sun is shining, energy storage makes sense – for times when the sun is not shining.

In Metro Manila, where grid power is relatively stable and consistent, energy storage is not a necessity. Grid tie systems work efficiently in the Metro, coupled with net metering, where excess power produced by the solar panel system is exported to the grid in exchange for credits.

What about power-starved areas?

Solar batteries

There are two main types of solar batteries: lead-acid batteries and lithium batteries. Lead-acid batteries are like those used in cars. Since 2012, the cost of lithium batteries has dropped more than 50%. This trend is good news for 2020 because it means installing off-grid or hybrid systems is now affordable and cost-competitive. Does it make sense to use batteries for residential solar systems?

BLACK AND BLUE PANELS: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Ever wondered why some panels are colored blue and some black? The colors are not chosen by manufacturers for aesthetic purposes. It all comes down to how solar panels are manufactured. Let’s take a look at the different types of solar panels and why they carry those colors.

It starts with the silicon

Solar is highly made out of Silicon (Si), a semiconductor material that is the second most abundant element on Earth and is used in a multitude of applications, commonly for electronic components. Silicon has a touch of blue in color which explains why most of the solar panels look blue in color.

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

Numerous silicon crystals are used to make the more common polycrystalline solar panels which are also known for its blue color. The nature of how polycrystalline panels are produced is the reason why it is cheaper to manufacture and popular because of its low cost and wider availability.

The blue color of a polycrystalline panel is a side-effect of the silicon crystals reflecting light and the anti-reflective coating the panels undergo to improve its absorbing capacity and efficiency. One disadvantage of the polycrystalline is that it is less efficient compared to its counterpart (the monocrystalline panel), which is due to the number of silicon crystals that make up the solar cell causing a limited space for photons to travel through.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline panels are more intricate and complicated to produce since it uses silicon with a high level of purity and is aligned in one orientation, creating one silicon crystal in each solar cell. The tedious process of how monocrystalline panels are produced is one reason why it is more expensive. The darker color observed in monocrystalline panels is caused by how the light interacts with its silicon layer.

Which is the better: blue or black panels?

The efficiency of solar panels does not rely on aesthetics but on scientific reasons. The black naturally absorbs more light than the color blue, thus causing more space for the photons to travel through in each solar cell. Due to how they were produced, polycrystalline and monocrystalline panels do not just differ in the physical sense but they also offer different benefits and disadvantages. Monocrystalline has higher efficiency but will definitely cost more, while Polycrystalline is cheaper. If you are limited by roof space and you’re looking for more highly efficient solar panels or simply opting for aesthetics, you may want to consider having a monocrystalline panel for your system. If you are on a tight budget, have ample roof space, and prefer a lower price, polycrystalline might be your best option.

A “Zero Bill” home is a household with an electric bill of Php0.00 each month. This is also referred to as a net-home or a zero-energy building – and it means it produces as much power as it consumes, making it very financially lucrative. FACTORS THAT LIMIT SOLAR PRODUCTION

Having a large roof space can be an advantage when putting up a solar system since you can install a higher quantity of solar panels compared to a home with a limited roof area. However, your system does not solely depend on the capability of your solar panels. There are several internal and external factors that can also affect solar production which you may want to consider to achieve the best results for your system.

Temperature

Did you know that colder temperatures can improve and enhance the performance of your system? In fact, warmer and hotter temperatures can cause energy losses since solar power is generated using the sun’s light and not heat. These high energy levels caused by hot temperatures impede the production of power because the energy is converted into heat instead of electricity. Higher and prolonged heat exposure can also cause degradation of solar cells.

Temperature does not affect the amount of sunlight gathered by the solar panels but it affects how the energy is produced and converted inside the cells. To maintain higher efficiency, solar panels should be positioned to have a breathable space and adequate airflow to induce natural cooling.

Orientation

To maximize solar production, solar panels should face the sun where it would receive the most sunlight all year round. For a tropical country like the Philippines, it is advisable to face the solar modules in the south. Facing it in the true south will generate the highest yield or harvest and the tilt angle can be between 10 to 40 degrees to match the local settings. Remember that the outcome and results may vary as it is a case to case basis. This is the part where your home’s geometry and location becomes an important factor. Installing the same size and system in different locations would still give you different output or yield. Shading

Grid Tie System

A grid tie system is a solar energy system that is interconnected to your utility grid. This system uses solar as the “first priority” power to be used during the daytime. It is important to remember that a grid tied system doesn’t have to meet the entire power demands of the home. During cloudy days, night time or when the solar panels are not producing at full efficiency, the home can get energy from the grid.

When the grid tie system produces more power than what you consume, the excess or surplus power is exported and can be sold to the utility company via the “Net Metering” Program. The credits earned can offset your night time and weekend energy usage. This is how you can achieve the fastest ROI in the grid tie system and why it is considered the most efficient solar system. It also makes the zero bill possible!

Zero bill

A small to average sized system is a common build for starters and homeowners who are interested in going solar. Normally, the size of their system is tailor-made to their monthly power consumption and after installing solar, their electric bills decrease from 30% to 75%. Thrilled by this phenomenon, one of our clients even said “Parang na-addict ako sa solar noong nakita ko yung menos sa kuryente, gusto kong i-zero out na yung bill ko!” Some homeowners will even expand their system to the extent of filling out their entire roof with solar panels!

Should You Clean Your Solar Panels?

Since rooftop solar panels get dirty because they are outside and exposed to endless environmental factors all day every day, then they have to be cleaned. There may be times when you wonder: should you clean your solar panels? The correct answer is: yes, if necessary.

Let’s go over various factors to consider before you clean your solar panels – or have them cleaned. These include solar panel cleaning method, weather, frequency of maintenance, cost, and safety precautions.

SOLAR PANEL CLEANING METHOD

There are a few correct ways to clean your solar panels because there are many different types and kinds of solar panels and they are all different. If you have a Solaric system, then you just have to call us and we will take care of your solar panel cleaning.

SAFETY FIRST

Rooftops are high off the ground, so it is best to have the professional solar installers or roof experts do everything that is roof-related, for safety purposes. Ensure that the personnel comes wearing complete Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

WEATHER VARIATIONS

Solar energy output is indeed affected by various factors, and this includes variations in weather and climate. On a clear, bright, sunny day in the Philippines, the system’s power graph forms a bell curve. Highest energy production typically happens around noon, when the sun is brightest. These are the times when the solar panels operate most efficiently. On the other hand, during cloudy days, solar panels still do work – since the rays of the sun still find their way to shine through the clouds and the rain. However, since sunlight is limited, then it follows that energy production is limited as well. The actual amount of electricity generated during such days is dependent on the density of cloud coverage. Thus, the solar panel system’s production is not as consistent and considerably reduced during cloudy days and rainy days. Rain can add dirt to the panels but the dirt is very minimal. The rain mostly does the work of rinsing and cleaning your solar panels. When it rains, you benefit from the water falling from the sky because it is doing the work for you.

WHEN CAN YOU DO IT YOURSELF?

You can clean your solar panels yourself in manageable situations, such as when the dirt or debris is mild and you can easily use a hose to clean the panels.

However, in unmanageable weather conditions, you are recommended to contact panel cleaning experts or your solar installers, and have them take care of the cleaning for you.
