SOLARIC COLLABORATES WITH THE GERMAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND UNIVERSITY OF MAKATI IN DEVELOPING ITS SOLAR TECHNICIANS COURSE

Manila, Philippines – On May 28, 2019, Solaric Corp., the leader in solar rooftops and solar panels in the Philippines, collaborated with the German Chamber of Commerce and University of Makati (UMak) in a roundtable discussion at the Integration Room of UMak to develop and review the curriculum of UMak’s first-ever course for Solar Technicians. The course syllabus was jointly planned, discussed, and developed at UMak. The preparation for this technicians’ course for solar installers began in 2018, and it is nearing fruition and completion this year.

UMak is a public tertiary academic institution with 16 colleges and 3 academic centers catering to 17,000 students. One of the colleges, the College of Technology Management, is developing a program for solar technicians up to 100kW peak solar systems. Currently, TESDA training regulations for solar technicians are only for smaller sized systems such as 2kWp systems and below. UMak aims to develop an industry-wide acceptable training standard for solar technicians which can complement the current National Level Certification (NC) issued by TESDA.

As a major and globally recognized player in the solar industry, founder of Solaric and President Mike De Guzman was invited by Dr. Elyxzur Ramos, VP for Academics of UMak, to once again join the roundtable discussion. De Guzman is known for his solar advocacy, having trained over 5,000 individuals in his company’s trademark SOLAR101 and SOLAR202 courses in the last six years. This collaboration of industry leaders and experts aims to level up the current technicians and vocational programs in our country and to promote industry certification for qualified and deserving technicians.

Dr. Ramos emphasized, “Actually, we were also a pilot university of the K-12 educational system. We started grades 11 to 12 as early as 2012. Our goal is to ensure the employability of our graduates. There is a big demand for skilled workers. A career can be made if you are a very good technician.”

The pilot course will purportedly enable education in the renewable energy sector, which is currently a field and market in high demand.

De Guzman said, “The Philippines will have to add at least 800 Megawatts a year of solar generation, just so we don’t have to build additional coal plants. That equates to 120,000 homes and businesses with rooftop solar. To date, we only have a nationwide total of over 2,100 registered installations. If we want to reverse climate change, we have to make solar technologies attainable to everyday technicians and electrical practitioners. That needs formal vocational training like how they did it in Germany.”

Solar has been gaining traction in the RE sector around the world. In the Philippines, people still need to learn and become more aware and knowledgeable in the applications, implications, and effects of solar power and renewable energy. People must understand the basics, especially in terms of true capital and investment costs, and applications of solar solutions in smart and renewable energy projects. Though solar panels in the Philippines, has been growing in sales, as much more individuals are educating themselves about this fairly new technology.

The mind-blowing solar boom

Today, the market is flooded with a vast array of solar tech options: crystalline silicon panels, organic and carbon nanotube cells, multi-junction solar cells, thin-film solar panels in the Philippines, solar farms, solar plants, and a variety of other solar power generation hubs. In year 2017 alone, the United States installed more than 10 gigawatts of solar PV. A more mind-blowing statistic is the fact that five states in America now generate at least 10% of their electricity from solar. Now if only the rest of the world would follow suit.

 

Rooftop solar PV is now better, cheaper, and cooler

The solar PV market has taken a quantum leap. As of the moment, silicon photovoltaic panels are leading the race. The debate on the streets is about which tech is going to rule in a few years. Whatever it is, no matter which way it is turned around, it still remains the power of the sun. Countries all over the world are now eyeing the possibility of requiring all new homes to install solar.

 

Then there was Tesla

The Tesla solar roof tiles seem to have never really become the hit we imagined it would become. Speculations declare that the problem was the competition in terms of price. The typical rooftop solar prices had dropped so ridiculously low, making residential rooftop solar available to just about anyone. Building integrated PV (BIPV) had difficulty staking its claim in the market because the available alternative was cheaper and more affordable.

 

Floating solar

The challenge: finding land for solar. The solution: they put solar on water. And so now we have it unraveled before our very eyes: floating PV (which are PV panels mounted on platforms that float on lakes and bodies of water). What are the advantages of these floating solar things? Not too much site preparation required and the panels remain at a cooler temperature which will enhance their efficiency. Although floating PV was born in 2007, it is only beginning to trend this 2018. South Korea boasts its Geumjeon floating solar power plant. Japan and China are lining up to do the same. In 2017 alone, 100 MW of floating PV was installed on the planet. Project talk is that one is set for construction in Indonesia in 2019.

 

Unstoppable takeover

As solar PV continues to take over the planet, more sub-markets are beginning to emerge that solve challenges arising in the midst of this era of technology. Now there is even saltwater PV which is also referred to as offshore solar. This type sits on harbors or bays beside wind or oil platforms. Since saltwater PV is still in pilot phase, its potential has yet to be determined.

So let’s sit back and relax and keep up with the latest alternative solar tech developments. The widespread dominance is clear. We never know what mind-blowing solar milestone to expect next.

3 Ways Solar Panels Are Becoming More Efficient

You have probably heard or read about how solar panels are not at all effective at converting the energy of the sun to electricity. This statement has always been used by those who are critical of solar technology, saying how installing solar panels here in the Philippines does not live up to its potential.

All of these are simply untrue. There is a reason why solar is one of the fastest-growing new sources of energy. In fact, millions of homeowners all around the world have already installed solar panels in their homes. Today, solar energy is mature and ready enough to power the grid and our homes.

This is not to say that there is no longer room for improvement, however. While it’s true that the most efficient solar panels that are commercially available can reliably convert about 24% of the energy of the sun, it is also true that traditional solar cells that are silicon-based only have a maximum theoretical efficiency of 30%.

New technologies are being developed to take the efficiency of these panels up to 50% and more; some of them are only a few years away from being commercially available. To provide more explanation, here are 3 ways solar panels are becoming more efficient:

 

Both sides of the solar cell are used

Most standard solar panels use a black or white ‘backsheet’ to provide a sturdy backing layer to attach the solar cells. But recently, panels that are being manufactured are clear on both sides—allowing them to absorb light from both sides.

This new technology is sometimes called “Bifacial,” which means that both sides of the solar cell can absorb light.

 

Cells are packed more tightly packed on the panels

Have you ever noticed white, empty spaces between the cells and along the edges of a solar panel? These white spaces you see are actually wasted solar panel area.

The corners of the solar cells are cut off which leaves empty spaces. Today, solar cell manufacturers are finding new ways to reduce the gaps or eliminate it altogether. Essentially, this would allow the cells to produce more power.

 

Improved textures, materials, and antireflective coatings

The next time you come across a solar panel, take note of its coloration. If the color of one of the cells in a solar panel is slightly off, this might indicate poor quality.

One of the few indicators of a solar panel’s quality and the ability to produce power is the consistency of the color of the cells. Solar engineers are now developing more consistent manufacturing processes to improve the efficiency of a solar panel.
