How To Choose The Right Size For Your Solar System

You would want to know how to correctly size your solar power system so you can achieve your goals and make the most of your grid tie solar system.

STEP 1: DETERMINE HOW MUCH SAVINGS YOU WANT FROM YOUR SOLAR

This is an important first step. You should define your financial goals (how much savings you want). Are you looking at 30% savings? 50% savings? 75% savings? Or are you looking at getting that coveted Zero Bill? This is also in line with several other factors, such as budget, rooftop space, location, power consumption patterns, etc. The goal is to size your PV array to achieve your end goal.

STEP 2: ANALYZE YOUR POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

Different households or facilities use power differently. There are some households with children in the home all throughout the day, using power in a homeschooling setup. Other households have no one in the house during the daytime, and most power consumption is at night time. When the Solaric engineer conducts a site survey or site assessment, all these factors are considered, along with other elements such as rooftop space, shading, etc., prior to preparing the design of your solar system. There are various constraints on every project and such restrictions affect design and system size: budget, space, and energy offset. We want to design and build a system for you that offsets a certain percentage of your nighttime power consumption.

STEP 3: CALCULATE YOUR kWh USAGE

Your usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) can be obtained from your electric bill. It is ideal to provide copies of several months of bills to our engineer, so that they can be analyzed. Energy spikes and consumption are usually highest in the summer, with heavy use of aircons and appliances during those months. The most ideal way to determine your average monthly kWh usage is to add up your kWh consumption for 12 months, then divide the figure by 12 to get your average monthly consumption. Divide by 30 to determine your daily kWh usage. Another way to determine your usage is to use your appliances and plug them in a power consumption table. Alternatively, our engineers can also check your basetime loads during their site assessment.

STEP 4: CALCULATE THE SIZE OF YOUR SYSTEM

Once you have determined your daily kWh power requirement, divide it by the Peak Sun Hours of your location to get the kW output. From there, we can identify how many solar panels you will need for your system, that is in line with your end goal of going solar.

STEP 5: CONSIDER OTHER FACTORS

Lastly, it is also crucial to fine tune the system design. Other factors should be taken into account, such as the mounting system that will be needed for your rooftop, the direction the panels will face, surrounding trees or elements that may cause shading, equipment type, conduit run, net metering requirements – all these play a vital role in finalizing system design.

Your solar system is made up of different components. How do they work and come together to bring you your savings?

It starts with the solar panels

Your grid tie inverter can provide you real-time information about your solar systems such as the current amount of energy being harvested at any point in time, or even the total amount generated since it was energized, the carbon footprint equivalent in some inverters, how the panels are performing, etc. That is why is it important for your inverter to have WiFi access. Most inverters can provide you detailed reports and statistics about your system. This can be monitored through a website or an app that you can download for free on your mobile devices. That way, at any given moment in time, from anywhere in the world, you can monitor your solar harvest!

Electric Meter

So, you consume the power that comes from your solar system, but do you ever wonder what happens to the excess electricity that your system generates?

When your grid tie system generates more power than what your home consumes, the excess or surplus power is exported or sold to the utility company via the Net Metering program. That is why it is important to register for Net Metering if you will be installing a system for your home or a system that is below 100-kilowatt peak (kWp). With net metering, your exported power is paid to you in terms of “credits”. The credits earned can be used to cover your nighttime and weekend usage.

Solar energy in the Philippines has become the top renewable choice all over the world since it is sustainable and cost-effective – especially now with the constantly rising electricity prices. A dog breeder from Laguna talks about how solar panels in the Philippines benefits his home and his business

David from Laguna

David’s 2-storey home stands in an exclusive, private, gated subdivision in Biñan City, Laguna, where he resides with his wife, two children, and househelp. On a typical day, the appliances that the household runs include a washing machine, dryer, aircon, television, fans, and refrigerator. The house is equipped with four air conditioning units, including the living room. In 2018, David’s electric bill amounted to approximately Php15,000 to Php16,000 each month.

Expenses started to pile up

However, David suffered a stroke during the summer of 2018. He could not continue working for his employer, so he passed on his work responsibilities to his eldest daughter. It was then that he started to notice the household expenses piling up. After exploring potential solutions, he decided to invest in a solar panel in the Philippines.

Finding the right solar company

How bad is El Niño?

The weather is ridiculously hot and extreme. On top of that, it is made worse by climate change. They say 2019 is the hottest year in recorded human history. Even the United Nations confirmed in an analysis that the last four years were the hottest in terms of global temperature records, which is, in fact a “clear sign of continuing long-term climate change”.

So, it is in fact true. There is indeed an urgent and critical need for action to address climate change and global warming in the Philippines through the use of solar systems. Another striking fact is this: the 20 warmest years in history all occurred within the last 22 years.

Additionally, increased temperatures are also known to contribute to extreme weather conditions such as droughts, hurricanes, and flash floods. In the Arctic and Antarctica, even the sea ice cover is melting. Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are getting smaller. This is our present-day reality.

Yet much of the world continues to rely on fossil fuels. This means that greenhouse gases will continue to be emitted and will continue to increase. Heat will continue to be trapped in the atmosphere. In other words, this means there will be more heat in the coming years.

CASE STUDY: ANALYZING THE SOLAR PANEL SYSTEMS OF CAR DEALERSHIPS IN BATANGAS AND CAMSUR

How Solar Beats the Economics Just Because of Benefits

The nation first engaged itself with the solar trend through end consumers: the homeowners. Then, the commercial and industrial sector followed suit, recognizing and internalizing the economics of rooftop solar systems in the Philippines. These two case studies showcase car dealerships in two different provincial cities in the Philippines. Both facilities installed a 99.9 kWp solar panel system.

Car Dealership in Batangas City

In June 2017, a global car dealership’s 99.90 kWp solar system installation was energized. The system cost Php7.3 Million. Installation was performed in the course of 30 days. Annual savings were estimated at Php1.28 Million per year, with a projected ROI of 5.72 years. Analysis of its solar harvest in the last two years indicate that the system has harvested a total of 219.3 MWh (or 219,300 kilowatt hours of electricity). At today’s rates and economy, ROI may be achieved in five years or less.

Batangas City Environmental analysis

This is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from 33 passenger vehicles driven for one year. It translates to carbon dioxide emissions from 17,450 gallons of gasoline consumed. It is equal to 359 barrels of oil consumed. That is 169,536 pounds of coal burned. That power can charge 19.7 Million smartphones. That same amount of power can provide the electricity of 27 houses for one entire year.

Car Dealership in Camarines Sur

In November 2017, a global car dealership’s 99.96 kWp solar system installation was energized. The system cost was an outright purchase of Php8.056 Million. Installation was performed in the course of 30 days. Annual savings were estimated at Php1.3 Million per year, with a projected ROI of 6.2 years. Analysis of its solar harvest in the last 21 months indicate that the system has harvested a total of 181.57 MWh (or 181,570 kilowatt hours of electricity).

Camarines Sur Environmental analysis

This is equivalent to greenhouse gas emissions from 27 passenger vehicles driven for one year. It translates to carbon dioxide emissions from 14,448 gallons of gasoline consumed. It is equal to 297 barrels of oil consumed. That is 140,367 pounds of coal burned. That power can charge 16.4 Million smartphones. That same amount of power can provide the electricity of 22 houses for one entire year.

It’s all about protecting the planet

Homeowners, entrepreneurs, and business executives enjoy solar not just for its financial rewards, but also for the environmental pay-off. Switching to solar generates local and global environmental benefits.

There is enough mercury in multiple bodies of water to contain safety hazards. Most people do not realize that the primary source of mercury pollution is coal-fired power plants. With the dawn of solar power, there will be less mercury pollution because solar results in zero mercury emissions.

Solar is clean and safe, and does not cause air pollution. It doesn’t come from coal-burning power plants that emit gases that cause air pollution and smog. No harmful particles invade the air we breathe. Solar also does not cause thermal pollution.

Conventional power plants are cooled by bodies of water, such as lakes and streams surrounding it. This water thus gets heated, raising the temperature too high that it becomes destructive to aquatic ecosystems.

Solar has none of these results, effects, or consequences. Solar panels have no emissions. The systems are clean, safe, healthy. They do not contribute to any environmental problems, thus protecting the planet.

To sum it up, both car dealerships in both provincial cities will be achieving ROI in an average of five years, making both investments wise, sensible, and feasible. Additionally, the environmental benefits are endless, making the investment a win-win for the planet.
