In the #NewNormal, do we take clean air for granted?

They say necessity is the mother of invention so we made the #AirScrub! Within our first month of #ECQ lockdown, our engineers got to thinking really deeply about how we are going to live in the new normal. What if our coworker is asymptomatic, would I get my kids sick at home? Instead of dancing to the next hit on TikTok, our minds got focused on researching air sanitation technologies and reviewing best practices of the “bawal brownout” biosecurity labs which we designed years ago.

Securing a safe working environment for our office and homes is a continuing priority for us in #Solaric. Aside from frequent hand washing and mandatory face masks, we also need proven biosecurity measures to remain vigilant 24/7. And just as hard as we scrub our hands with soap, we should also scrub the air we breathe because the transmission is airborne and the disease is respiratory.

Miggy, our company ambassador and COO, is actually a major reason why we came up with the Airscrub40. We love our families, especially our children and grandparents. In a few days, we are going to brace for the “New Normal”. With much hesitation, the ECQ is going to be lifted but the COVID-19 threat is still out there, and thousands remain infected – or worse, asymptomatic.

With less than 0.1% of our population tested, it is impossible to tell who is a carrier and who isn’t, as even well-meaning citizens get thrown off guard and imperil their own families. An unknowing person can be an asymptomatic spreader, then what happens when he or she gets too close to an elder?
At work and at home, practicing GOOD safety is employing procedures, techniques, and tools that avoid accidents or mishaps. Nothing is 100% but we should strive for excellence because this 2020, second place is unacceptable. For mitigating airborne virus particles, the best methods are to use hospital-grade Filtration Systems, N95 face masks, and practice proper handwashing.

Our engineering team OK-ed two main designs on Project AirScrub. One is the Airscrub40 at P7,000: meant for most residential settings, equipped with activated carbon and catalyst filter, and an antimicrobial HEPA filter. We, of course, added things that make it more effective like the internal UV lamp and an Ionizer to help clear out the air with electrostatically charged particles. Good for rooms in the 11-22sqm range.

The other is the big papa, the Airscrub 95 at P15,999. With a CADR of 488 cubic meters, it is suitable for 30sqm (basic medical) to 58 sqm of residential spaces. This is a class leader on its own, a chic looking unit but stuffed with industrial-sized capabilities that have found bulk orders for doctor’s offices, dental clinics, and donations to ERs. Washable aluminum-framed Pre-filter takes on the big clogging debris such as dried skin, mosquitoes – yes, it sucked some during our testing, including pet hair and visible dust. Then the cold catalyst filter/activated carbon for VOC’s IE smelly stuff, from fried fish to formaldehyde – but not yet tested yet on durian since it is still banned in our office.

The last filter is the HEPA filter, it can easily scrub .3 micron air, and rated to pull in 488 cubic meters per hour and maintain a 99.95 rating on PM 2.5. For added measure, anti-bacterial coated fabric is placed ahead of the HEPA filter. Optional H13 filter to higher spec .1 micron is available as well.

The Airscub95 surprisingly has lower per cubic meter running costs and since it is so powerful it can help one comply with US CDC’s recommendation of at least 12-15 air changes per hour on recirculated filtered air. This unit is a hit among dental offices and MD’s who are not taking chances and accountancy firms who studied the per cubic or per day running cost of anything.

Now we all know things that spin, and keep them spinning depends on the longevity of its motor and efficiency. We specified DC brushless motor technology, and Nidec of Japan has a proven motor for this application. Since we wanted our system to automatically go to turbo mode if the air quality is bad, and quiet mode when air quality is good, a Japanese particulate sensor and AI is placed in to control the unit or can be over-ridden to operate in MAX setting, in the same way that a dentist preps his drill or someone about to cook “Tinapa”.

SCHEDULE A SITE SURVEY

There is no one size fits all. We customize solar panel systems in accordance with the needs and power consumption behaviors of our clients. An essential step of the process is the site survey. You may request a site survey from our team and we will send Solaric engineers at a day and time of your convenience. The site survey is free for houses and businesses within Metro Manila. Onsite, the engineers determine your power consumption, assess your roof, examine your electrical system, measure the distance of the cable run, and identify possible tapping points and inverter location. Then the engineers prepare a site survey report, with a recommendation on the solar system capacity and solar PV design. This report and PV layout are sent to our Sales team, who now prepares a proposal for your solar system. The proposal is sent to the client within three days from the date of the site survey.

INSTALLATION

Once you have selected the best option for you, we will now move forward with contract signing, document submission, and payment. We schedule your installation with our solar installer experts. The Solaric installers and electricians head on to your house to install your solar and the timeframe to complete installation varies, depending on your roof type, chosen solar capacity, and other various factors. Am I a good candidate for solar on my rooftop? What are the factors to consider if I’m planning to go solar?

ROOF SPACE

Installing solar panels on your roof will require ample roof space. Having small or limited roof space will limit the number of solar panels that can be installed. Take note that ideally, the number of solar panels to be installed should be enough to cover your daytime consumption. Solar panels differ in sizes depending on their wattage or efficiency. Lower efficiencies may come in a smaller or standard size of 1-meter x 1.6 meters while higher ones can go up to 2 meters in length or higher. Some clients will prefer to have smaller low wattage panels so that they can put an additional one or two more panels while those who are strictly limited in roof space will go with higher efficient ones to maximize the energy they can harvest with the limited space.

SHADING

Having large roof space or installing the best and premium solar panels will not automatically mean a feasible case for solar. External factors such as shading can play significant roles in limiting the energy production of your solar system. Shading on a small part of your panels can have a huge impact on the overall performance of the system. There are different circumstances that may cause shading such as the changing angle of the sun throughout the whole year, trees, nearby establishments, and roof obstructions such as vents and antennas. It is critical to make sure that you choose a reputable solar company that understands the engineering concepts behind solar, and one that has established its name through the years.

ROOF TYPE AND STRUCTURE

Is your roof GI sheet, clay tile, or roof deck? All these roof types are applicable for solar but the method of installation may differ which is why it is important to get an installer who has the knowledge and experience installing solar panels on those different types of roofs. A single panel weighs around 18 kilos, plus the weight of the mounting structure. If you are planning to put more plus the railings, your roof structure should be strong and durable enough to withstand its mass.

The Decision

With all of these factors in mind, it is important to ask your solar provider their recommended system for you based on your energy consumption. From there, you can identify how many solar panels you will be needing to be able to save on monthly electricity expenses. To this day, we implore our citizens to #StayAtHome. You’ve got to keep it to “essential movements” only and exercise your best judgment. Do not send the whole family out to get food – instead, choose the most able-bodied member to do so. It’s literally a viral war zone out there. Just get your stuff and zip back home ASAP, and make absolutely sure you do not bring the coronavirus home. Elderly members are strongly advised to stay at home and delegate shopping tasks to younger members, or even neighbors.

The risk of infection is high, chances of death are very real, and surviving this lockdown needs preparation, skill, and avoidance of undue risks.

Here is what we know of this enemy: the Coronavirus COVID-19. It basically enters our bodies through the Nose, Eyes, and/or Mouth via respiratory droplets, secretions, and secondhand touching. Coronavirus has a weakness: it depends on having a lipid layer to keep it intact, thus it is easily dissolved by exposure to alcohol or soapy water. The virus threat is invisible at .3 microns. Even cautious health workers catch it by subconsciously touching their nose or eyes. That is why having the mere face shield and goggles is life, and social distancing is crucial.

One of our homegrown procedures is disinfection by using a diluted bleach solution to spray on footwear, our welcome mat, and even outside our vehicles. We refer to it as a HAZMAT chlorine solution foot bath. Our vehicles are sanitized first thing in the morning and upon its return to office base at the end of shift. Every day, throughout this war of COVID, carry a small personal spray bottle of alcohol with you to constantly disinfect. Spray your hands and your phone very often.

We hope our COVID survival tips work out for you. We are waiting for the lockdown to get done with because we’ve got lots of work to do and we’ve got to #TurnOnTheSun.

Therefore, treat the outside world like a warzone and be as prepared as a soldier entering a biological battlefield. Wear your mask, don protective outerwear, always be using your alcohol, and decontaminate before entering your home.

THERE’S LIFE POST-COVID – BUT FIRST, LET THE EARTH HEAL

These indeed are trying times. We are reminded about our mortality, how to live in the absence of people, and the responsibilities to get through this crisis.

During the past three weeks, some of us have lost track of what day it is. A weekend is now indistinguishable from a weekday. To those with pets, they are wondering why we aren’t being given their usual walks outside. We are now discovering what is really important. Time with family. Playing with the children. Resting, exercising, praying. Listening to each other’s stories. Healing.

Essential Superstars of COVID-19

Then there are those who have always been there but under-sung “essential” superstars such as the grocery boys, water delivery man, pharmacists, and the brave frontliners keeping our hopes alive by fiercely fighting this invisible monster.

Yes – we cringe as we see the growing COVID statistics of that insidious and seemingly unstoppable virus. We should not forget that we still have plenty to count our blessings for. True, we have begun to see the ugly rear its head, but by a greater margin we are also witnessing the best and that makes us proud to be called a #Filipino.

So, we sacrificed our jobs, put life as we knew it on HOLD. Without a doubt, we are besting the other well more prosperous countries like Italy and the United States in terms of contagion spread or in terms of the deadliest of all numbers, body count.

We are seeing corporate tycoons retooling their beer and gin factories to produce rubbing alcohol. Neighbors are looking out for their less fortunate neighbors. Police, LGUs, and government officials are working the extra mile to keep peace and order. Entrepreneurs who are still paying wages and distributing rice even though faced with the uncertainty of the future. Yes, even in the face of setback and adversity, there exists meaning and kindness.

Mother Nature Says Respect Our Planet

Now the earth is beginning to heal. The COVID-19 pandemic is also Mother Nature’s way of telling us to RESPECT our planet. Yes, we really trashed our world from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wildlife we abused. Besides the NOW obvious ramifications of eating an undercooked bat, we are now seeing much cleaner and bluer skies. It is because now we are burning 90% less fuel, burning way less coal and oil to light up our grids.

After this lockdown ends, majority of us will probably go back to our old ways driven by consumerism – but the learned few will reflect and figure out how to live better, make wiser choices, create new dreams, take care of ourselves and our planet more, and become a more involved citizen of the world. While at home, plan for the future to take your mind off of things. Remember that this too shall pass.

Post-COVID Suggestions

In the meantime here are some daydream post-COVID suggestions. Feel free to make your own as you continue to harvest hope for our future. Go for a run, plant a tree, visit a long-lost friend, plant a vegetable garden, install some Solar Panels because running that aircon on solar is so much cooler for the environment than burning coal.

COVID-19: A WAKE UP CALL

It is safe to say that no one expected that this year would put a halt on our daily normal lives. What is considered to be normal such as busy streets and traffic-jammed roads are suddenly empty as businesses shut down and lockdowns were imposed to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

We usually just write about solar or energy needs in our Solaric blogs. However, our country is on the cusp of a Pandemic emergency and our actions or inactions can mean the difference between the continued spread of COVID-19, or the virus burning off to the pages of history.

Our social media team has encountered a lot of myths and fake news about the virus such as eating raw garlic can cure coronavirus, or it only attacks certain races or people of certain religions. What we can tell you with 100 percent conviction is that blindly following such advice would certainly turn you into a garlic breath racist fool.

So here are some recommendations we can pass off to you.

1. BE AWARE

Listen to official pronouncements, follow the news on the outbreak. Discern between fake news or not. Make hard decisions regarding safety and avoid contributing to the problem.

2. SOCIAL DISTANCING AND SELF QUARANTINE

Act like you already got the virus. Limit travel outside for bare necessities such as food, water medicine. Cut out unnecessary travel or you might have a virus that will travel with you. Make sure you have sufficient food, water and over-the-counter medicine to treat flu-like symptoms. The truth is, some of us reading this will get the virus before the quarantine is over, but for the most part, it will be like the flu. Paracetamol, cough medicine, lots of bed rest.

3. BIOSECURITY AND HYGIENE

Do you know what is more effective than a $3,000 Bio HAZMAT suit? A bar of soap and water. Yes, what your teacher and your Lola always said was on point: wash your hands often. Now, wash your hands as if your older relatives depend on it. Wash your hands with antibacterial soap before you sleep, when you wake up, before you eat, after you eat, after touching that elevator button, before touching anything or anyone, as much as possible. Additionally, bring a small spray bottle with 70% or higher alcohol content everywhere you go and spray liberally when soap is unavailable.

Please be classy – do not hoard. The poor grandmother who cannot buy tissues or alcohol because some scalper decided to buy the last 25 bottles of alcohol on the corner store, might have needed it most. Just because you could buy it all doesn’t mean you should.

At Solaric, we did reverse hoarding. To enable our office pantry stock of 6 enormous jugs of alcohol travel to the homes and hands of our employees and workers, we decanted them to little spray bottles. Now, all of our employees have an extra layer of defense before and after they interact with other people or after touching things like doorknobs. We view biosecurity as a measure that must be available to all and not to some. This is especially crucial for our energization teams that are working to keep hospitals and smart solar grid solutions supported and energized.

This coronavirus is very persuasive. It has a sleeper incubation period and the only defense we have is vigilance, discipline, and health maintenance. Together as a nation, we can fight this virus, but we have to act as one.

Perhaps the COVID-19 pandemic is the Earth’s way of taking a deep breath and is reminding us how we should value every resource we might have forgotten – since we constantly trash the air we breathe, the water we drink, the wildlife we senselessly kill and abuse the planet we live in. Maybe it is Mother Nature’s way of humbling us and reminding us ala Thanos snap that everything can easily come to a stop, awakening us to the brutal truth that we know so little about our own world.

The world has suddenly changed with this global pandemic. We were able to spend more time with our families, appreciate the little things we once took for granted, and become more thankful for the blessings we received. How uplifting to look out into the once condensed and hazy Metro Manila skylines because now they are clean, clear, and blue. Less pollution resulted in burning 90% less fuel. We burned way less coal and oil to supply our grids. The environmental effect was magnificent.
