STAY GREEN WHILE IN QUARANTINE

Being forced into lockdown and to stay at home during the enhanced community quarantine, many of us Filipinos are relying more heavily on electronic gadgets and appliances to quench our boredom and to keep entertained during these dire times. Not to mention that some employees are practicing the work from home schemes. With the increased consumption of electricity while all of us stay at home waiting for the pandemic to pass, learn some eco-friendly tips to better conserve energy.

Turn off unnecessary lights

When not in use and not necessarily needed, turning off your lights can help decrease the cost of your electricity. While working during the daytime, try to be near a window where there is more natural light. Just as how solar works, try to make the most out of the sunlight during the daytime to do chores and other activities. Yes, in your own little way, you too can turn on the sun. Do not also forget to turn off the lights during nighttime when you are about to sleep.

Let the outside air in

Just like how you should use natural light when the sun is out, try to open your windows and let the natural airflow inside your house. If not enough, turn on the electric fans instead of the AC since fans are cheaper to operate and can effectively keep you cool during the hot summer days and have more air circulating around than an enclosed space. Cannot survive without an AC? Another tip is to gather all members of your household into a room where there is an aircon and stay there together while watching your favorite movies or taking your afternoon siesta. Learn how you can have guilt-free aircon #GuiltFreeAC here:

Avoid using the dryer

It’s summertime, so make the most of it by drying your clothes in the most natural and conventional (and Filipino) way: hang them dry. Not only are you able to kill germs and bacteria by drying them outside in the blazing sun; you will also be able to save a lot of money by doing so.

Indulge yourself in fitness

Try to be more active during this lockdown by doing exercises instead of consuming your entire day on your gadgets. One of the hard lessons that this pandemic has taught us is that “health is wealth”. It is now time to begin looking after ourselves better. Health and fitness come hand in hand. If you don’t know where to start, use an app or Youtube as your guide.

Unplug unused electronics

Not only because it may cause fires, but also because a television left plugged on is still consuming electricity. Don’t forget to give your electronics, appliances or gadgets a break too. Unplug them when not in use. Be practical and conserve energy.

Go gardening

Have you considered planting your own vegetables or fruits, or maybe planting trees to provide shade and minimize the heat? Gardening is a good hobby to start with during the quarantine period – plus, it is even a good start for something self-sustaining. You will also be able to control how you want your vegetables produced. You can ingest more organic and natural food.
