Incorporating batteries in a solar setup is one of our solar solutions, especially for clients who seek energy backup during power outage. When is this solution ideal? When you live in a power-starved area, or a place with constant power outages and brownouts. With an OFF-GRID SOLAR SYSTEM or a HYBRID SOLAR SYSTEM, the excess energy from the solar panels can be stored in the batteries, and then this stored power can be used for night time consumption. Batteries do not only provide energy when the power is out but it can also be a buffer whenever the weather is cloudy, or during times when there is not enough solar energy to supply your loads.

SMILE Lithium Battery

The Alpha SMILE battery can store enormous amount of energy enough to run an air conditioning unit on a normal day and definitely more than enough to supply power on your home during a power outage. What’s good is that they even last for at least ten years compared to an approximate 2-year life of a lead acid battery. Not to mention that this battery beast is being powered by the sun.

This battery is a European design award winner and works like a grid tie system, except that it’s hybrid and can detect excess power and divert it to charge the batteries before selling the surplus power to the grid. It can also detect if the house is starting to use grid power and discharge the battery to keep the grid consumption to zero until the battery runs out and gets recharged by solar the next day.

Not that cheap!

Lithium battery design systems are not cheap as Grid Tie systems, as they can cost about 40% or more compared to the typical grid tie system. But with its 10-year warranty and energy security it can provide more benefits to clients who are serious in preparing for calamities, and more value for those who suffer from power outages regularly. Installing solar is considered a high-risk activity because it involves working at heights, moving and lifting solar panels, equipment and fragile materials around and up and down the roof. Trained for Safety while working at heights

Deciding to put solar on your roof is a big investment to make and you want to make sure that the installed system is correct and tailor-made to your needs. There are 3 kinds of solar system currently available in the market: Grid-Tie, Off Grid, and Hybrid system – each catering to different situations, conditions, and client expectations for a solar system. How do the three differ from each other?

Grid Tie System

Grid tie system is the most popular and practical build for homeowners especially in Metro Manila and areas where there is a stable supply of grid power. A grid tie system is interconnected to the grid, meaning that during daytime, the power that your house uses comes from your solar, and during night time, the grid supplies your electricity. This system uses a grid-tie inverter which regulates the power coming from your panels and increases the voltage slightly higher from the grid to make sure that solar will be your first priority power. In case your solar underperforms and fails to deliver the power needed by your household due to cloudy weather or system failure, it automatically switches your source back to the grid, making it seamless and preventing any unwanted power interruption. However, since it is ‘tied’ to the grid, no grid power means no solar power even though the sun is shining brightly outside.

A grid tie system is good for homeowners who are looking more into monthly savings from their monthly electric bills. The grid tie investment has the fastest ROI among the various solar system options, thanks to the Net Metering Program – wherein you can sell any excess or unused power to the grid and earn credits. In doing this, you can use those credits to offset nighttime consumption, and the result is a significantly reduced electric bill.

Off-Grid System

An independent system on its own, an off-grid system is built to stand alone which means it operates without having power from the grid at all. The off-grid is perfect for power-starved areas that do not get any power supply from their electric utility, or areas that constantly suffer from grid failures. The off-grid system includes power storage and needs batteries to work. In this type of system, power is stored to the battery to be able to provide electricity all the time. This system is high maintenance and can be costly because of the occasional battery and charge controller replacements.

Hybrid System

When you want an over-all energy security system, the hybrid system is perfect for you. A hybrid system is a mix of a grid tie and off-grid system, hence the term hybrid. It also has batteries, similar to an off-grid setup but at the same time, you are also connected to the grid. This system can be programmed to sell the excess power to the grid or use it to charge the batteries, which you can later use during the night or during power outages. A hybrid system is likewise higher in cost compared to a grid tie, and will also require you to maintain and replace the batteries from time to time.
