HOW DOES THE HEPA FILTER WORK?

When buying an air purifier, the most common thing you will encounter is the HEPA filter. What is a HEPA filter and how does it work?

What is a HEPA filter?

HEPA filter or high-efficiency particulate air filter is designed to effectively capture harmful particles in almost every size through a very fine mesh similar to a kitchen sieve. HEPA filters are known to be very crucial components of air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, and air-conditioning or ventilating units.

When combined with other outer filters that trap larger particles likes hair, dust, and pet dander, it reduces the strain in the HEPA filter and helps it capture the even tinier particles like pollen, mold, viruses, and allergens at a highly effective rate by trapping them on its fibers through impact, interception, and diffusion. Larger particles can’t get past through these net of fibers upon impact and is straightaway captured while smaller particles are intercepted along the way as they pass through the filter and stick. The even smaller particles that are invisible to the eye are captured through diffusion. This involves the science of Brownian motion. These tiny particles are so small; they barely have mass which makes them bounce around when they hit with a gas molecule, causing them to hit the fibers and eventually get stuck.

HEPA in AirSAFE

When choosing and understanding how a HEPA filter should work, a HEPA grade can help you compare its efficiency. The general HEPA grade standard ranges from H10 to H12 and can trap particles that are greater than or equal to 0.3 microns in 99.997% efficiency.

The AirSAFE units are equipped with an H11 grade filter but it can also be upgraded up to H13. The H13 has a denser fiber and falls under the medical grade. INVERTERS: THE BRAIN OF YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

Just like how solar panels function as the legs and arms of a solar system, a solar inverter is a valuable part in any solar energy system whether big or small. In fact, the most crucial and complicated process of power production happens within this box, also considered as the brain of your home’s solar system.

The brain of the system

If the solar panel’s main task is to collect and harvest sunlight, the inverter works as a brain that “inverts” the energy harvested by the panels into an energy that can be used inside your home.

The energy collected by your solar panels is called Direct Current or DC, while the appliances inside your home requires Alternating Current or AC to work. This is where the role of the inverter comes in because it inverts the energy harvested by your panels into energy that your home can use; and this energy can also be exported to the grid. Without the inverter, your solar energy system will fail to work as intended.

But wait, there’s more!

Just like how the human brain has a lot of functions, a solar inverter is not only limited to energy conversion, it also serves as a communicating device as to whether your system is working properly or not.

With the improvement in technology throughout the years, the inverters can now connect to the internet and provide online data monitoring. Through a mobile application or website, you can now easily access system information and performance of your solar system and compare harvest data per hour, day, week, month, or year. Some advance inverters can also detect underperforming/defective solar panels online – thus eliminating the need of having installers physically check your rooftop.

IS SOLAR WARRANTY IMPORTANT?

A good solar system should last for up to 25 years or more. That is indeed a long time and unexpected instances may cause disruptions on how your system operates which is why it is important that you are aware about good solar system warranty.

Solar Warranties

Just like any product you buy in the market, a solar warranty protects you from your solar investment and makes sure that you have something to uphold for your return of investment as your system generates power every year.

A typical grid ties system has a 25-year performance output guarantee. This means that the energy production and harvest capability should not drop below a certain degradation percentage. Once your solar system reaches 25 years, it does not necessarily mean that it’s dead and not functional. Your system would still work adequately but bear in mind that panels may have degraded over time thus resulting in 10% to 20% reduction in efficiency and harvest. Solar panels will continue to work as long as they are not physically damaged by external forces.

Meanwhile, solar panels typically offer 12 to 25 years in terms of product warranty, depending on the brand. Solar panels will continue to work as long as it is not physically damaged thru any external forces. Inverters have 5 years of warranty. GRID TIE SYSTEM AND BATTERIES

Does solar run during brownouts? It’s a common misconception and we receive this question on a daily basis. What is the answer? It depends.

Depends on what? It depends on the type of solar power system you have.

Grid tie system does not have batteries

A grid tie system as the name implies is interconnected to your utility grid and its main purpose is to generate savings. The grid tie system ties your solar to the grid – that is its main purpose. It is not a power backup when the power is out. This kind of system does not have batteries. It does not have any storage for energy, which means that there is no possible way to save or store the harvested solar power. Now since this setup ties the grid to the solar, then it follows that when there is no grid, there is no solar. When it is brownout, the system shuts down. The grid tie inverter can detect if and when there is no power coming from the grid, and then shuts down automatically and immediately. There is no manual switching needed to be done, because the system is automatically synchronized. The inverter will automatically turn on and operate again normally once everything goes back to normal and the power comes back on. The Grid tie system is the most appropriate setup for areas with stable grid power.

Why can’t I just use batteries?

The number one reason is because batteries are expensive. Battery-integrated setups will triple the total cost of the system, affecting your ROI or return of investment. In a grid tie solar setup, ROI is typically achieved in 4 to 5 years while in a solar setup with batteries, ROI can take up to 10 years or more. Keep in mind that lead acid can only last for an average of two years while lithium is only about 10 years, which means you need to constantly replace them after their lifespan is over.

Ultimately, the question is: do you NEED batteries? You will have to assess the location of the facility you plan to install solar on. If there is reliable grid power, then batteries are unnecessary.

We only recommend battery solar setups in power-starved areas or areas with unreliable and unstable grid. There is also another option of a hybrid system, which is a combination of grid tie and off grid system. On a hybrid system, your critical loads on your “emergency panel” will automatically run from solar and batteries, not only during power outages but all day every day.

AIRSAFE CARE 101: WHEN TO REPLACE FILTERS

It’s been a year ever since the lockdowns have started and almost a year since we launched our AirSAFE series. To ensure that your units are still filtering the best out of your air, take a quick check if your filters are still in good condition and if not, it might be the best to replace them now to ensure AirSAFE’s efficiency.

One of the most unique advantages of AirSAFE is that it comes with replacement filters available for purchase anytime. This is something that the Solaric’s R&D department kept in mind when we noticed the scarcity of available replacement filters in the market. Solaric has all filters in stock for all the unit models: AS40, AS95, AS-MAX and bladeless fan. There’s no need for the hassle to buy a brand new unit if your filter becomes too dirty to use.

Replacing filters

The frequency on when to replace the filters vary from 3 to 6 months, in some cases up to one year, depending on how heavily polluted the area is. There is no exact filter replacement indicator in the unit to tell you if the filters need to be replaced but your AirSAFE units will give you a signal if it does. For example, if the light indicator continues to be red with no signs of changes even after an hour of turning on the machine can signify that your filters are needed to be replaced. There are also ways to prolong the lifespan of your filters by vacuuming and drying them under the sun every once in a while. Make sure to wear masks and gloves if possible for safety.

Filter costs

Every filter sets purchased comes with a Carbon/Cold Catalyst and Antibacterial Cloth/HEPA filter. The pre-filter that filters out larger particles in the AS95 and AS-MAX models are not replaceable, and can be washed to clean instead to ensure AirSAFE’s efficiency.
