MOUNTING SOLAR ON ROOFTOPS

No matter how efficient and expensive your solar panels and inverters are, everything is pointless if you do not have a good mounting system. Just how important are these steel bars to achieve that target goal of savings and energy security?

The Philippines faces a minimum of 20 typhoons a year, some of them are extremely powerful just like Typhoon Yolanda which led to the beginning of Solaric Corp. Although sometimes overlooked, solar mounting systems are important because that is how the solar panels connect the entire system to your roof. A good and properly built solar energy system should be able to withstand a 250kph winds, and should be able to hold the system to its location for 25 years or more. It also has to endure extreme heat and rain, as well as the additional weight carried by the panels on a regular or windy day.

Mounting racks in the Philippines are commonly installed on the following:

Rooftops – This is the most common way of solar residential installations and how Solaric came to be known as the king of rooftop installations. Rooftops may vary from GI sheet, shingles, clay tiles or roof deck installations, and may require different and additional mounting materials varying from case to case basis. Rooftop installations are more efficient since the solar panels are more exposed to sunlight and just sit on the rooftop. Thus the rooftop now has a dual purpose: to hold the solar panels in place and to shelter the house beneath it.

Ground – Compared to rooftop, ground installations are more accessible for installation, cleaning, and maintenance. Mounting systems on this type of installations usually use a foot and ballast or system. Blocks made from concrete are placed on the site to secure the panels without directly drilling or penetrating the ground or cemented roof deck in some cases.

Always look for quality

Regardless where the solar panels are going to be installed, it is important that the mounting system to be used is sturdy enough and can withstand any typical external forces. It is also worth noting to look for Solar professionals and providers, who will properly evaluate the site, give appropriate measurements and recommendations, and outstanding quality of workmanship. You should also be particular on the type and brand of mounting system that they will use beside the solar panels and inverters. As a tropical country, the Philippines basks in an abundant amount of sunlight and shares 2 weather systems: summer season and the rainy season. Though it is easy and wise to go solar, how does the rain affect your energy harvest during rainy days? What happens to your solar energy system during the wet season?

Every single year, we are plagued with news of rotational brownouts due to the thinning supply of electricity in our grid.

Earlier this month, the Department of Energy (DOE), raised yellow and red alerts for three straight days, and gave a warning to the electricity consumers of rotational brownouts in some areas. Yellow alerts are raised when the power reserves are thin and a red alert when there is an insufficient energy reserve that may result in rotational power interruptions. To add salt to the injury, there is also a possibility of electricity rates going up due to the insufficient power supply and increase of electricity prices in WESM. The DOE indicated that the supply issues were caused by the sudden shutdowns and extended scheduled maintenance of some of the large power generation plants.

The recent hot temperatures are one of the huge factors in the increased energy demand. Time never goes backwards, and with the increasing population and new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is one stark realization.
