ARE YOU THINKING OF GOING SOLAR THIS SUMMER? HERE ARE THE MAIN FACTORS TO CONSIDER

Am I a good candidate for solar on my rooftop? What are the factors to consider if I’m planning to go solar?

ROOF SPACE

Installing solar panels on your roof will require ample roof space. Having small or limited roof space will limit the number of solar panels that can be installed. Take note that ideally, the number of solar panels to be installed should be enough to cover your daytime consumption. Solar panels differ in sizes depending on their wattage or efficiency. Lower efficiencies may come in a smaller or standard size of 1-meter x 1.6 meters while higher ones can go up to 2 meters in length or higher. Some clients will prefer to have smaller low wattage panels so that they can put an additional one or two more panels while those who are strictly limited in roof space will go with higher efficient ones to maximize the energy they can harvest with the limited space.

SHADING

Having large roof space or installing the best and premium solar panels will not automatically mean a feasible case for solar. External factors such as shading can play significant roles in limiting the energy production of your solar system. Shading on a small part of your panels can have a huge impact on the overall performance of the system. There are different circumstances that may cause shading such as the changing angle of the sun throughout the whole year, trees, nearby establishments, and roof obstructions such as vents and antennas. It is critical to make sure that you choose a reputable solar company that understands the engineering concepts behind solar, and one that has established its name through the years.

ROOF TYPE AND STRUCTURE

Is your roof GI sheet, clay tile, or roof deck? All these roof types are applicable for solar but the method of installation may differ which is why it is important to get an installer who has the knowledge and experience installing solar panels on those different types of roofs. A single panel weighs around 18 kilos, plus the weight of the mounting structure. If you are planning to put more plus the railings, your roof structure should be strong and durable enough to withstand its mass.

The Decision

With all of these factors in mind, it is important to ask your solar provider their recommended system for you based on your energy consumption. From there, you can identify how many solar panels you will be needing to be able to save on monthly electricity expenses. These indeed are trying times. We are reminded about our mortality, how to live in the absence of people, and the responsibilities to get through this crisis.

During the past three weeks, some of us have lost track of what day it is. A weekend is now indistinguishable from a weekday. To those with pets, they are wondering why we aren’t being given their usual walks outside. We are now discovering what is really important. Time with family. Playing with the children. Resting, exercising, praying. Listening to each other’s stories. Healing.

Essential Superstars of COVID-19

Then there are those who have always been there but under-sung “essential” superstars such as the grocery boys, water delivery man, pharmacists, and the brave frontliners keeping our hopes alive by fiercely fighting this invisible monster.

Yes – we cringe as we see the growing COVID statistics of that insidious and seemingly unstoppable virus. We should not forget that we still have plenty to count our blessings for. True, we have begun to see the ugly rear its head, but by a greater margin we are also witnessing the best and that makes us proud to be called a #Filipino.

So, we sacrificed our jobs, put life as we knew it on HOLD. Without a doubt, we are besting the other well more prosperous countries like Italy and the United States in terms of contagion spread or in terms of the deadliest of all numbers, body count.

We are seeing corporate tycoons retooling their beer and gin factories to produce rubbing alcohol. Neighbors are looking out for their less fortunate neighbors. Police, LGUs, and government officials are working the extra mile to keep peace and order. Entrepreneurs who are still paying wages and distributing rice even though faced with the uncertainty of the future. Yes, even in the face of setback and adversity, there exists meaning and kindness.

Mother Nature Says Respect Our Planet

Now the earth is beginning to heal. The COVID-19 pandemic is also Mother Nature’s way of telling us to RESPECT our planet. Yes, we really trashed our world from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wildlife we abused. Besides the NOW obvious ramifications of eating an undercooked bat, we are now seeing much cleaner and bluer skies. It is because now we are burning 90% less fuel, burning way less coal and oil to light up our grids.

After this lockdown ends, majority of us will probably go back to our old ways driven by consumerism – but the learned few will reflect and figure out how to live better, make wiser choices, create new dreams, take care of ourselves and our planet more, and become a more involved citizen of the world. While at home, plan for the future to take your mind off of things. Remember that this too shall pass.

Post-COVID Suggestions

SUMMER 2020: COVID-19, LOCKDOWN, AND HEAT

Delivering smart options to your doorstep

Summer is here. As the temperature gets hotter, and as more people are staying indoors due to enhanced community quarantine, an increase in your electric bill is surely on the way. There is solace, however, in knowing that your house can be powered by the sun.

Lower your bills

By installing solar, you will become your own power producer. That means you generate your own electricity. The result: lower electric bills.

Now is the time

Many consumers have been contemplating on getting solar, especially in these very critical times when everything is uncertain and indefinite: money, work, media, power supply.

WHAT ARE YOUR SOLAR OPTIONS?

GRID TIE SOLAR

Grid-tie systems interconnect solar power with grid power from the utility company. These solar systems do not use batteries. They do not need batteries, because there is no need to store power. When it is daytime, the power comes from solar. When it’s night time, the power comes from the grid.

When you use more electricity than your solar is producing, then you will start using grid power from the utility (or Meralco power). On the other hand, when you produce more power than you consume, the excess or surplus power generated can be exported to the grid using the Net Metering program of the utility company. The exported power is paid via credits on your electric bill, which can be used later on.

What happens to the exported power? Electricity sent to the grid from your solar system can then be used by other consumers on the grid (such as your neighbors). If you want to lower your electric bills and reduce it by 30% to 70%, or even eliminate it and make it a #ZeroBill, then the Grid Tie system is the best solution – especially if you are located in a metropolitan area or city where the grid power is stable most of the time.

OFF-GRID SOLAR OR HYBRID SOLAR (SOLUTIONS WITH BATTERIES)

There are, of course, some clients who require the reliability of instant backup power that can only be provided by solar systems with batteries. With an off-grid solar system or hybrid solar system, you can maximize excess solar harvest by storing the power in the batteries for evening consumption, or consumption during times when there is no grid power. Batteries serve as a buffer for times when the sun is not enough and loads have to be continuously supplied with sustained energy. Off-grid or hybrid solutions are for those that expect 24/7 power, and cannot rely on the grid or utility (or Meralco) for continuous stable power.

The best kind of batteries that technology has to offer in the market today are lithium batteries. Solaric has installed hundreds of solar panel systems with batteries for clients all throughout the archipelago, including commercial, industrial, and military clients. There are some projects that require ZERO power outages, such as radar or mission-critical communication systems. In such instances, Solaric has designed customized solar systems that power entire islands or radar facilities – those that have zero diesel, zero oil, and zero grid. Yes, Solaric can deliver power even when it seems nearly impossible.

And then you can SMILE

SMILE Lithium battery hybrid system: a European design award winner and very popular in countries in which the government actually pays the consumer to put in batteries with their solar systems, in order to help manage the grid. It works like the regular grid-tie system but with a twist — a smart system that detects if there is excess power and diverts it proportionately to battery charging before selling it to the utility for a discount. It also detects when the entire house is starting to use grid power. When that happens, it proportionately discharges the battery, keeping grid power consumption to zero until the batteries run out.

In times of calamities or power outages, it can supply a steady 5000w of critical loads until the batteries run out or until the batteries get recharged by the sun the next day. This setup is highly beneficial and self-sustaining. Again, these types of setups are requested by those who are serious about disaster management, or those who are in power-starved locations. Such systems like these will cost about 50% to 70% more than the typical Grid Tie systems.

A grid tie solar system is connected both to your utility grid and solar panels. It uses solar energy as the first priority power to be used to cover your daytime consumption, enabling you to cut down the cost of your utility bills.

By going solar, you depend less on non-renewable sources of energy and reduce your carbon footprint. WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

With the impending summer months, the demand for power will be at an all-time high, especially now that people are ordered to stay at home during the enhanced community quarantine. What happens to your solar system during brownouts?

Grid tie solar is not a backup

A grid tie system is interconnected to the utility grid. It does not have batteries, which means your solar system does not provide any backup power even if the sun is up and shining during a “brownout”. During brownouts or power outages, the grid tie inverter shuts down automatically and immediately when it detects that there is no power from the grid. This is mandated and required by law to protect the utility linemen that may be working on a knocked down line in your area to restore power during an outage. Once everything is back to normal and the power comes back on, the inverter will automatically turn on and operate again normally.

Batteries

There are clients who want energy security during dire times. For such clients, there is also an option to install and integrate batteries into your solar system. These systems with batteries are usually recommended for power-starved areas or areas with unreliable and unstable grid power. Hybrids

The hybrid system is a combination of a grid tie and an off-grid system. With a hybrid system, your critical loads on your “emergency panel” will automatically run from solar and batteries. This happens not only during power outages but all day every day. This is when you need the balance of energy savings and security provided by batteries.

For purposes of crisis management, Solaric typically recommends the emergency panel or critical loads to run what is referred to as “LFRC”. What is LFRC? Lights, Fans, Refrigerator, Computer. That is what we tag as essential in times of disaster.

Generators

For homes that installed solar with pre-existing generators, make sure that your contractor tapped the solar on the line side or upstream of the manual or automatic transfer switch, because you do not want the generator and the solar to work at the same time without specialized controls.

On the other hand, if you are installing a generator after you already installed your Solaric system, make sure the solar is shut down and isolated before operating your generator. Your solar system is made up of different components. How do they work and come together to bring you your savings?

It starts with the solar panels

The magic starts when photons coming from the sun hits your solar panels. The more panels installed on your roof, the more energy you can harvest which is directly related savings. These solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity that your home can use.

Grid Tie Inverter

The inverter is like the brain or engine of your solar system. The inverter converts the direct current (DC) produced from your solar panels to alternating current (AC) which is required for household use. Yes, that is correct: DC to AC. The power from your inverter to your home’s main panel box is integrated seamlessly and there is no need for manual switching. Your grid tie inverter can provide you real-time information about your solar systems such as the current amount of energy being harvested at any point in time, or even the total amount generated since it was energized, the carbon footprint equivalent in some inverters, how the panels are performing, etc. That is why is it important for your inverter to have WiFi access. Most inverters can provide you detailed reports and statistics about your system. This can be monitored through a website or an app that you can download for free on your mobile devices. That way, at any given moment in time, from anywhere in the world, you can monitor your solar harvest!

Electric Meter

So, you consume the power that comes from your solar system, but do you ever wonder what happens to the excess electricity that your system generates?

When your grid tie system generates more power than what your home consumes, the excess or surplus power is exported or sold to the utility company via the Net Metering program. That is why it is important to register for Net Metering if you will be installing a system for your home or a system that is below 100-kilowatt peak (kWp). With net metering, your exported power is paid to you in terms of “credits”. The credits earned can be used to cover your nighttime and weekend usage.

And then the Zero Bill

The combination of an ample-sized solar panel system, net metering, wise usage of power at home – all these will result in fast ROI. Sometimes, it can result in the legendary Zero Bill.

WATCH OUT FOR FAULTY SOLAR SYSTEMS FROM BOGUS AND ROOKIE SOLAR INSTALLERS!

Solar energy is indeed a gamechanger from the traditional sources of energy. Solar panels harvesting the sun’s energy and converting them into an energy that can be used in the home or business shows us that the sun is definitely a valuable resource. The two-fold end results are monthly financial savings and environmental protection. However, with the solar industry booming, new companies are entering the market using substandard equipment, employing inexperienced personnel, and delivering poor workmanship. These end up in faulty solar systems. You do NOT want to take such risks.

“Installing solar is a serious business. It is something that should only be done by the experienced and the skilled. Fake solar panels or improperly installed panels – these are serious hazards that can cause fires and disasters. Choose a solar provider that knows what they’re doing because electricity, power, and energy are serious matters. Do your research on experience, reputation, services, reliability, testimonials, everything. Why do I insist on that? With six years of Solaric doing solar, we have been asked to come and repair solar disasters of other companies, hundreds of times. The mistake can be very costly, because we have to remove panels, wires, inverters, and replace them. It is double the work. Making the decision

You have to be able to detect the scammers, newbies, rookies, fly-by-night companies, and such. How? Here’s a short list to remember:

They make promises that seem illogical, impractical, or out of this world
They charge much lower prices than competitors
They have very few client testimonials available with the media
They do not offer top-quality equipment
They have a questionable background
They ignore you after you have paid for services
They do not have a physical office address
They do not have corporate bank accounts and accept cash only
They do not have an after-sales service or customer care department

There are many other signs that indicate the illegitimacy or scam nature of a company or organization. It is best to always do your due diligence when engaging a company for its services. The best way is to exhaust your own personal network of their own experience with the company. Word of mouth and personal connections in this day and age are the most valuable references when making business investments and decisions.

EQUIPMENT

In choosing solar equipment, prioritize solar panel efficiency, manufacturer reputation in the market, warranties against industry average (10 to 25 years), and compare the cost to relative efficiency. The most efficient equipment is not necessarily delivering the best value. Always consider cost-effectiveness. Take note of risks because defects, repairs, underperformance will add costs in the long-term.

COST

Expensive solar panel systems do not necessarily mean that they are the best. Likewise, cheaper solar solutions are not necessarily the ones you should get. Make sure to invest in Tier 1 panels, reputable manufacturers of solar equipment and inverters, and only choose those that come with warranties.

WORKMANSHIP

Choose a solar company that employs solar installers and electricians with years of experience under their wing. Poor workmanship results in exposed or undersized wirings, and these result in electrocution and fire hazards. All installations must be executed in accordance with the standards of the Philippine Electrical Code (PEC). Make sure your solar company of choice knows exactly what they are doing, with people with the right credentials and expertise.

Look for a solar provider who you can trust, equipped with solar experience and can design and personalize your solar system in accordance with your needs and requirements.
