4 Signs Your Home Is Ready For A Solar Panel System

4 Signs Your Home Is Ready For A Solar Panel System

What are the signs your home is ready for a solar panel system?

  1. You own the land or house
  2. You have a rooftop that can support a solar panel system
  3. Your electric bills keep increasing
  4. You have more sunlight than shade in your area

Almost every household has solar panel setups nowadays. It’s clear that more and more are realizing the advantages of going solar. First of all, solar is clean – meaning it helps in protecting the environment. Second, solar is renewable and sustainable. Third, solar makes attaining the Zero Bill possible. At Solaric, we believe that solar energy can benefit anyone, but that doesn’t mean every roof is ready for solar panel installation services. If you’re wondering if your home is ready to go solar, we’ve laid it out for you. Here are the signs your home ready for a solar panel system.

You own the land or house

It can be significantly harder to install solar panels on a roof that doesn’t officially belong to you. If you own your house or otherwise have permission from its owner to make structural changes, this is alright. But if you live in a condominium, for example, you’ll likely have to discuss the possibility of solar panel installation with the owner of the condo.

You have a rooftop that can support a solar panel system

The distributed weight of one solar panel is about 20kg. So, one of the telltale signs your home is ready for a solar panel system is if it has a rooftop that can support the weight of the panels. This can be assessed by structural experts.

Roofs have to be durable to support a solar panel system. After all, they’re exposed to elements all day, every day. However, solar panel systems usually last for 20 to 25 years. Thus, it would also be best to ensure your roof will not require repair or replacement before the solar panels are dismantled or reinstalled.

If your roof is any older than 5 years old, it is best to have it assessed for structural damages before you jump right into panel installation. If your roof is either new or newly repaired, it would also be good to match its current lifespan with that of your solar panels.

If you own a home with a rooftop, then why not benefit from reduced electric bills and increased home value by installing a solar panel system?

Your electric bills keep increasing

Your electric bills keep increasing

Electric bills are a dreaded monthly expense. Why? It’s simple. Electricity prices are immensely volatile. If you want to avoid volatility and reduce your monthly electric bills, then that’s a sign your home is ready for a solar panel system. You deserve a #ZeroBill too.

You have more sunlight than shade in your area

To make the most of solar harvest, you want the most sun you can possibly get. You won’t generate a lot of energy if your roof is in the shade. Ensure your roof is unobstructed by surrounding trees. It would be best to trim or prune them to ensure an optimal solar harvest.

A good way to check this as well is by utilizing solar compatibility checkers online, which assess your home via a bird’s-eye view from satellite imaging. Otherwise, you can also have your solar panel installation experts discuss the matter with you, and see if the sunlight in your area is conducive to generating enough energy to power your house.

Key Takeaway

We’ve discussed 5 conditions and signs your home is ready for a solar panel system. If you check all boxes on this list, you’re more than adequately prepared to have panels installed. If not, you might want to take them into consideration before you take a step further into turning on the sun.

You can confirm some of these yourself—the ownership of the property, for example, and the available sunlight in your area—while the rest can be quickly assessed and confirmed by a panel installation expert.

If you’re not sure where to find a reliable and trustworthy solar panel installer, don’t worry! Our team of solar experts would be more than happy to help. Contact us today for any inquiries.

BEAT THE BROWNOUT WITH THE SMILE5!

BEAT THE BROWNOUT WITH THE SMILE5!

With the recent random power outages this month due to the thinning supply of electricity in the grid, and the warning given by the Department of Energy and NGCP that the yellow and red alerts in Luzon may last up to August, a lot of Solaric clients are not just looking to cut down their monthly electric bills but also want an energy security when the power goes out.

The great news is that you can beat the brownout with a SMILE!

Solar and battery setups

Solar and battery setups

Integrating batteries in a solar energy system is not new in the market. In fact, Solaric has already done multiple projects that involve off-grid and hybrid setups. These solar setups are typically for people who want to have greater control on the energy harvested by their solar panels, and for those who prefer or require energy backup during power outages.

The batteries or energy storage systems are used to store the energy coming from the solar panels that can be later used for night time consumption when the sun is out, or simply when a brownout unexpectedly strikes. Batteries also serve as backup whenever during cloudy or rainy days, or when there is simply not enough solar energy to supply your loads.

The AlphaESS SMILE5

The AlphaESS SMILE5

The Alpha SMILE5 includes a hybrid inverter module and lithium battery modules that can store enormous amount of energy enough to run an air conditioning unit on a normal day and definitely more than enough to power emergency appliances and light loads on your home during a brownout. Amazingly, they can last for at least ten years compared to lead acid batteries that have only an approximate 2-year lifespan. The SMILE5 can also be charged either by solar or the grid, and is predominantly designed for energy independence.

Aside from that, the SMILE5 is also a European design award winner and works like a grid tie system, except that it’s hybrid and can detect excess power, and then divert it to charge the batteries before exporting to the grid. It can also detect when the house is starting to use grid power. At this point, it can discharge the battery to keep the grid consumption to zero until the battery runs out. Then the battery gets recharged by solar the next day.

The price for energy independence

Although it costs about 40% more compared to a typical grid tie system, lithium battery setups continue to gain popularity especially with the news of energy and power insufficiency we encounter yearly. It also gives a good 10-year warranty and energy security for people who want to fully maximize the solar energy harvested from their systems for self-consumption. Additionally, it brings peace of mind to people who always want to be laging handa. It certainly is a good investment for those who likes to take it a step further in terms of being disaster-prepared and brownout-ready.

3 STEPS TO GOING SOLAR: EASY AND SIMPLE WITH SOLARIC

3 STEPS TO GOING SOLAR: EASY AND SIMPLE WITH SOLARIC

Finally decided to turn on the sun and put Solaric in your roof? We got you! Even during the strictest community quarantines, our sales, technical, and installation teams did not falter to provide the best service in turning on the sun for Filipinos. Getting Solaric is not complicated and the #ZeroBill dream is definitely achievable with just these three easy steps to going solar:

Step 1: CALL SOLARIC

From simple energy saving tips, explaining how solar works, and up to building your dream solar energy system setup, our Solaric agents are trained to guide you every step of the way. You may reach us on our hotlines at 75040092, 09178603141 or 09083775577 or message us on our Facebook page. Our agents will typically ask you for your daytime appliances that you use, your monthly electric bill, roof type and location. From there, Solaric can already give you an initial system size recommendation and cost. Got questions about the clients, products, and services we feature on our Solaric Facebook page? Leave down your comments and a Solaric Facebook agent will surely attend to your inquiry.

Step 2: SITE SURVEY

Step 2: SITE SURVEY

To be able to finalize the residential or commercial solar project, a site survey is conducted to ensure a quality solar build. You may immediately request for a site survey from your Solaric agent and we will send a Solaric engineer at a day and time of your convenience. The site survey is free for sites within Metro Manila! From there, the engineer will have a thorough assessment of the facility: determine possible tapping points, roof condition angle, or slope, cable run, electrical system, and then a detailed survey report will be prepared to determine if the site is indeed feasible for a solar power system. A site survey report, quotation and PV layout with options that include various solar equipment brands will be sent to you 2 to 3 days after the site inspection.

Step 3: CONTRACT SIGNING & INITIAL PAYMENT

Once you have decided the best option suited for you on the proposal given, we can now proceed with the contract signing and payment terms.

Step 4: INSTALLATION

Once the 50% down payment is settled, the installation can now begin which may take a whole day or more, depending on the scale of the project. Energization and final system inspection whether the system meets the standard will follow afterwards, along with turnover!

Step 5: AFTERSALES

Our commitment in providing the best service to our clients does not end after the installation. If you encounter any problems or concerns with your solar system, feel free to give us a call and we will assist you through all issues and concerns. Solaric will also help you in the documentation and process of “Net metering” should you decide to apply.

BUILDING A SOLAR-READY HOME

A home with solar grids

Designing a solar ready home is a good step to minimize construction and installation costs especially if you are exploring the possibility of future upgrades. Integrating your home design to a future solar build will maximize the solar system’s potential and make the installation easier and hassle free.

Allot good roof space, tilt and orientation

Roof space with solar panels

To make the most of your solar, providing optimal placement and good roof space for your solar panels will result in higher efficiency of the system. It is best to orient the solar panels towards what is referred to as the ‘solar window’, for the system to receive the maximum amount of solar energy at any time. In Metro Manila, the ideal set up is to face the panels towards the “True South”, with tilt of between 10 to 20 degrees.

Be careful of the possibility of shading

Make sure that your roof is free from any obstructions that may later on cause shading on the panels that will be installed (such as trees, antennas, or surrounding buildings). Carefully plan where to put the vents, skylight, or heater, and place them where they cannot affect the solar panels.

Does that mean I have to sacrifice on design?

Organized solar grids

Not really. In fact, the whole concept of a solar-ready home is to design the establishment to be more well-built and solar equipped when a homeowner finally decides to install one. The homeowner can approach their architects and contractors to better incorporate your home design with solar. This can be a huge breather especially since constructing a home and installing solar can be an expensive combination. Preparing your home to be solar ready will make your future solar installation easier – like plug and play.

TEAM KRAMER GOES SOLARIC

Team Kramer For Solaric

And the bill goes from 79k to 29k

The Kramer family. The most-watched social media family in the Philippines. They are wholesome, progressive, ahead of the curve in many ways, star basketball player dad, actress mom, and super adorable children. They know how to roll and live the socially responsible lifestyle from urban gardening, and a superb homeschooling regimen that is now the envy of parents under the new normal.

We are proud that Doug and Cheska asked us to commission their own personal Solaric power plant for their home. After thoroughly analyzing their needs, we came up with a 16kWp system to handle their extraordinary TEAM KRAMER house with all the toys and aircon to be used.

Pre-Solar Power

Kramer Family Call

The first pre-solar electric bill of their dream home was a mind-boggling P79,000. This was an unacceptable monthly budget drainer even for the #Kramer Family. Even with Doug’s adept strategy of using inverter aircons, refrigerators, and LED lights, they needed something more aggressive – the professional services of another MVP, a solar company with the most amount of kWp solar installed and long track record of electric bills permanently dominated. That MVP is Solaric.

The Kramers wanted a house that is green-engineered to match their lifestyle. Cubic meters of rainwater is captured for their ECQ vegetable garden, large windows for natural light, all the while using Solaric to offset the burning of fossil fuels for their many electrical appliances.

We estimated 16 oil barrels saved a year alone for the Kramer house!
Not every home is the same but the winning game plan for electric bill domination is constant. It’s either solid defense or the ZERO BILL slam dunk.

The Future With Solar

Kramer Family

Fast forward a few months later from their P79k bill shock: #Solaric installed 16kWp Grid Tie Solar + Net Metering. The bill dropped down to an average of 30K, with the lowest bill in April 2020 of 23K! Not bad for a home with an elevator and multiple 24/7 aircon.

The Kramer family now has an average monthly savings of P30,000.
Not only was their solar a profitable investment – they lowered their monthly expenses and lowered their carbon footprint. And their solar powers the entire house: home school classroom, kitchen, swimming pool, man cave, home theater, and dual espresso makers!

CORONAVIRUS WATCH: SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

Bottles of alcohol for sanitation

With the first confirmed community transmission and the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, Solaric imposed several health and safety measures to protect its workers and employees in the midst of the increasing threat of this pandemic.

What is the Coronavirus?

Graphics of the Coronavirus

Coronavirus disease 2019 also referred to as COVID-19 is an infectious disease that started in Wuhan, China and has continued to spread globally and is recently recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a global pandemic. The infection can be spread from one person to another through respiratory droplets. There is no vaccine or confirmed treatment for COVID-19 to this day, which is why preventive measures such as social distancing and frequent handwashing are highly recommended.

In the Philippines, the first local transmission was recorded on March 5, 2020. The country is currently under Code Red Sub-Level 2, with authorities having issued a community quarantine on Metro Manila effective March 7. A few days later, the entire Luzon was placed under “Enhanced Community Quarantine”.

Solaric Safety Measures

An infographic stuck to a bathroom wall on how to wash hands

Solaric highly values the importance of health and safety, especially for its workforce. Prior to the announcement of Code Red Sub-Level 2, the company conducted a series of COVID-19 alongside its health and safety meetings to promote good work hygiene and protection. Various guidelines, fact-checks about COVID-19, and proper handwashing reminders were placed all around the Solaric headquarters and warehouses.

Besides personal protective equipment, otherwise commonly referred to as PPE, Solaric installers were also given face masks and goggles to protect themselves amidst the threat of Covid-19. The management also distributed alcohol and facemasks to the entire workforce. Everyone was heavily instructed to practice thorough hand washing and disinfecting. Shuttles were also deployed to avoid usage of public transportation and to minimize exposure to risk. Work from home was implemented company-wide.

“Solaric’s most important assets are its people,” said Mike De Guzman, President and CEO of Solaric Corp. “We take health and safety very seriously. Now is the time to behave as a good citizen and have constructive thoughts. We are trying to maximize our efforts in educating and promoting the best health practices, not just inside our homes, but also at the workplace. We can all achieve peace of mind by preparing for the worst,” he emphasized.

MY MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL IS 20K: SHOULD I GO SOLAR?

Close up of an electricity bill

What going solar really means

Shot of a home's roof with solar panels

Going solar is the new trend. It has become a lifestyle – one that has captivated Asia: go clean, green, safe, sustainable, and renewable. Solar panel systems can definitely reduce electric bills by 30% to 75%, increase the market value of your property, reduce your carbon footprint, and help protect the planet. The question, however, is: should you go solar?

Ask yourself the right questions

Going solar is not a simple initiative. There are many things to consider before making the decision. If you are uncertain about whether to go solar or not, here are the main questions to ask yourselves. We want to help you make the best decision.

1. Do you want to use the power of the sun?

The sun shining

The Philippines is a tropical Southeast Asian country. The average home in the Philippines receives an average of 4.5 hours of sunlight per day. This means that if you live in the Philippines, then you are certainly one of the very best candidates in the world for solar. The sun is a free, unlimited energy resource, and it is going to continue to shine for the next 5 billion years. The first question is: do you want to use the sun’s power? If yes, then proceed.

2. Do you want to reduce your bill?

This also comes with the fact that the Philippines is plagued with constantly increasing power rates. The average electricity price for homeowners is, to date, the second-highest in Asia. Each year, the power rates soar. The demand increases, the supply decreases, and the generation charges continue to climb. It is time to seriously ask yourself what your energy goals are. Why do you want to go solar? Is it because you want to reduce your monthly electric bills? If yes, then by how much do you want to reduce your monthly bills?

3. Do you want to eliminate your bill (or do you want a Zero Bill)?

Close up of electricity bills in its envelopes

If the answer to question #2 was yes, then it is time to examine further and ponder this question #3. There is a major difference between the two questions. You will have to decide which direction you want to take because your answer will determine the next steps. Once you’ve decided whether you simply want to reduce your bill or if you’ve decided you want to get rid of your bill altogether, then it is time to move on to question #4.

4. Are you willing to invest in a system that will give you an ROI of 5 years or less?

If you have a roof, you can go solar. If you want to reduce your bill, you can go solar. If you want to eliminate your bill, you can go solar. This question, though, is now about the investment. With any solar investment, the typical return on investment (ROI) is five years or less. This makes it a wise investment – not just financially, but environmentally as well. You have to be willing, ready and prepared to make that investment. The 5-year ROI does not even take into account the credits you may generate from exporting your excess power to the grid through the net metering program. With that setup, we’ve seen solar clients achieve ROI in 3 years. If you consume all the power that your system generates, you will still achieve ROI in 5 years or less. This makes the investment a win-win: economically profitable, payback guaranteed, and environmentally responsible. Most people say that when you go solar, the system pays for itself in the first five years. In the succeeding 20 years, the system pays you.

5. Do you want to protect the planet?

A hand holding the earth

Going solar used to simply be about being financially sensible and being practical. Now, however, it has become a serious advocacy about clean energy from the sun. If you install rooftop solar, your home will be a powerhouse that will combat greenhouse gas emissions. You will reduce your carbon footprint on planet earth. How? With solar, you would be less dependent on your utility company, which burns fossil fuels to produce electricity. If you solarize your home, then you will be a renewable energy source. This translates to the fact that you will be directly contributing to a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable world and future.

If you answered YES to all five questions above, then you are forward-thinking and embracing the energy reform decade. It also means that you are ready to go solar and it will most definitely be a worthwhile endeavor and investment for you.

Is it true that the cost of solar is dropping, all over the world? Absolutely. See prices in your area and get free solar quotes from info@solaric.com.ph.

The typical statistic is that the cost of rooftop solar installations has dropped down to about 70% in the last ten years. In 2018 to 2019 alone, the residential market witnessed a 5% decrease in cost. In the past, people viewed solar as a tech or a cleantech commodity. Now, it has evolved into sensible and practical home improvements. Going solar equates to giving your home an upgrade, especially this 2020. What matters in 2020 are smart decisions – and getting rooftop solar for your home is the smartest decision you can possibly make in today’s energy reform era.

“I SPEND THIS MUCH ON MY MONTHLY ELECTRIC BILL. WHAT IS THE BEST SYSTEM FOR ME?”

Our initial recommendation

A team installing solar on a rooftop

We can assume first that your monthly electric bill reflects power consumption that translates to 50% daytime consumption. From there, we can give you a ballpark figure of the recommended system plus the initial cost.

The right system size

For electric bills that range from Php1,000 pesos to Php3,000, we can recommend a 540Wp system that costs around Php60,000 or a 1.62kWp that costs Php128,000. Costs quoted in this article are for GI sheet roofs using polycrystalline solar panels.

For electric bills that run up to about Php5,000, we can recommend a 1.62kWp or 3.24kWp system (which costs around Php216,000). Meanwhile, for bills that range from about Php10,000, we recommend at least a 5.4kWp solar panel system, which costs around Php340,000. For bills higher than that, the minimum recommended would be a 10kWp system, which costs roughly Php670,000.

Your daytime appliances

Top wide view of a white roof filled with solar panel systems

Are you a heavy aircon user or do you use only lights and electric fans during the daytime? Using light loads during the daytime like your refrigerator, television, lights and electric fan may only require a smaller system while using an aircon during the daytime will immediately put your recommended system into 1kWp and above.

The final recommendation is dependent on the results of the site survey
There are numerous factors that can affect the final system that is best for you. We have issues of roof space, type of roof, daytime appliances, roof layout, shading, and other external factors, that determine what type of solar panel system you should install. Engineers and solar experts are the ones that conduct site surveys. They go to your house or business, examine your roof and structure, your electricals, your monthly bills, and learn about your typical power consumption. From all these factors, they then prepare a solar photovoltaic (PV) system layout and a site survey report. At Solaric, we offer free site surveys within Metro Manila. This is a very critical first step in the journey to turning on the sun.

After the site survey

Upon completion of the site survey report and layout, solar experts then recommend the solar panel system that is most ideal for your home or business. No two homes or businesses are exactly the same. Having tailor-made recommendations and solutions based on the information that you will give us and the site study of our engineer will ensure that you have the perfect system suitable for you. Solaric provides customized, integrated solutions that are designed to address the specific needs of each individual client.

BENEFITS OF GOING SOLAR IN TROPICAL PHILIPPINES

A large amount of solar panels located on a large field

DWIZ 882 is a commercial news talk radio station serving the Mega Manila market. The interview with Solaric President and CEO Mike De Guzman was aired live at On The Go, with Gani Oro.

At 5:00 PM on October 23, 2019, Solaric Corp. President and CEO Mike De Guzman was invited as a live studio guest on DWIZ 882 – On The Go to tackle and explain solar power energy. Although more and more Filipinos are now going solar, what are the existing barriers that are preventing everyone from going solar? What are the reasons that not every single Filipino is going solar? Does everyone really understand solar power and its implications and benefits?

What is Solaric?

Solaric CEO Mike De Guzman as a live studio guest on DWIZ 882

Solaric Corp. is a solar company that installs solar for ordinary houses, commercial buildings, and power plants. Their focus is to provide clean sustainable energy systems that are economically sensible and environmentally sound. We select and build our systems that are affordable and that provide the best value to our clients. If our systems do not save you money on your energy bill, it has little value for our clients. Our aim is to reduce your power bill by using proven PV technology.

“For example, the Solaric office is 120% renewable – we don’t have an electric bill. We run on 100% solar,” says De Guzman.

Teaching the Science

Solaric CEO Mike De Guzman being interviewed on DWIZ 882

“You can’t just slap solar panels on the roof – there’s a science behind it,” he adds. Since the inception of Solaric in 2013, they have engaged Filipinos nationwide in their industry-renowned weekend course dubbed SOLAR101 and SOLAR202. Solar101 is a semi-technical course that allows a layperson or engineer to understand the practical aspects of solar systems and how it can economically decrease electricity bills, replace diesel generation, and most importantly, educate the average consumer on what type of solar system to install in a given facility (home, business, farm, factory, warehouse, etc.) using a no-nonsense non-biased approach. Every chapter and module content of this class is based on actual experiences gathered in executing solar projects in the Philippines. Quality fundamentals and techniques are shared in efforts of helping the nation achieve its renewable energy goals. Solar202, on the other hand, is a course that teaches the average individual how to install a solar panel system. Students get their hands dirty and learn basic solar planning, design, and installation. To date, Solaric has successfully trained over 5,000 individuals on solar.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Solar power is energy harvested from the sun that is converted into electrical energy. Solar is clean, safe, unlimited, sustainable – and the most abundant renewable source of energy available today. The Philippines, being a tropical country, has a long summer season and some of the richest solar resources in the world. Going solar results in a reduced carbon footprint and reduced utility expenses (by 30% to 100%). Additionally, rooftop solar has very low maintenance costs.

Solar for a Church

One example cited during the interview was the solar power system installed on a church in Balanga, Bataan. Despite the church being built during the Spanish era, the 20 solar panels were still installed and proved beneficial and effective as the power source that runs the church office’s daytime operations. Today, the solar system on the church is what powers the office’s 2hp aircon during the day.
