WHAT CAN EVERY FILIPINO DO TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE?

It’s real and it’s here

Homes left wrecked by the effects of Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines

Climate change – it’s real and it’s here. It’s no longer a “what-if” scenario. Our home is literally on fire, yet it’s business as usual for the powers that be. Instead of cutting back on the incessant “coal pa more” traditional sources of energy and instead of burning oil galore, perhaps they should stop and listen to the school children cry with so much impunity because of the looming doom of their shattered futures.

And the disasters will ensue

The climate is indeed changing us. It does not care about national boundaries. It does not matter who is to blame or who polluted what. It is a simple scientific fact that global greenhouse gases trap heat and accelerate things to what we thought was unimaginable. The typhoons and string of disasters we are experiencing unleash even more destructive forces than a hundred World War 2 atomic bombs. Our summers will become relentlessly hotter and then the irrevocable will happen: we will run out of water. Ice caps and glaciers are melting so fast that we are seeing rising sea levels that threaten the very viability of our tropical islands. Unfortunately, the harsh reality is simple. The Philippines has a higher-than-average exposure to climate change.

It’s time for awareness

At Solaric, we are profoundly aware of this man-made phenomenon and humbled by the wrath of mother nature during our service in Tacloban in the wake of Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. Our entire mission and vision are centered on providing renewable energy. Climate change is a very serious issue. As renewable energy advocates, we continue to upscale our technology, devote dedicated efforts to advancements, and train thousands of students, engineers, homeowners, businessmen, environmentalists, advocates, lawmakers and fellow citizens on what solar technology is all about. In addition, we continue to make a true and significant impact by installing one solar roof at a time, tirelessly, every day throughout the archipelago. We don’t do it just to reduce the end user’s utility expenses – we do it because we want to contribute to saving our environment. We turn on the sun because we are environmentally responsible.

The question is: what about you?

There are hundreds of things you can do. Anyone and everyone can play a part in helping protect the environment and the planet. Take bold climate action. Become a renewable energy advocate. Learn about renewable energy sources and use them. Use energy wisely. Use energy-efficient light bulbs and energy-conserving appliances. Eat more meat-free meals (because eating less meat will contribute to reducing the planet’s heat). Adopt a green lifestyle. Use an electric vehicle or switch to one. Consume less so that there are less toxic wastes. Invest in a solar system. Become an active environmentalist or join a support group.

THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

THE BATTLE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE

Is the Philippines onboard?

What’s going on with climate change this 2019

This 2019, global emissions are hitting record levels. They show no apparent signs of declining. Statistics reveal that the past four years were the hottest years ever recorded in history. Additionally, temperatures during winter in the arctic zone have increased by 3 degrees Celsius, compared to the 1990s. Even worse, coral reefs incessantly die. Sea levels continue to rise. Air pollution is ever-booming. These are the clear, irrevocable life-threatening impacts of climate change.

The irreversible effects

The irreversible effects

Climate change is causing disruptions and harmful consequences to the environment. There is now a growing understanding and recognition of affordable solutions that can lead us to a more sustainable future. The latest figures and data indicate that if we shift towards cleaner sources of energy today, we can significantly reduce carbon emissions within 12 years.

“What I am enthusiastic about is putting a stop to the increase in emissions by next year. It’s nearly 2020. We need concrete plans to bring our renewable goals to fruition. It is time to introduce the concept of net-zero to the Philippines. In fact, it’s time for us to get on the frontline of climate change,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and Vice President of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

What is the Paris Agreement?

On December 12, 2015, in Paris, France, parties of the UNFCCC reached a milestone agreement to battle climate change and to intensify actions and funding for a low-carbon sustainable future. This visionary policy brings all countries together for a common cause – to undertake efforts and implement a framework to combat climate change together by strengthening global responses for a safer world and future.

IS SOLAR CHEAPER THAN COAL?

IS SOLAR CHEAPER THAN COAL?

Peering into the cost per kWh of coal power plants vs. solar power plants

The Philippines and its renewable goals

The tropical archipelago is composed of around 7,641 islands and a population of over 105 million. The nation has defined and set climate change and renewable energy goals, but how far has it really gone in its efforts to reduce its dependence on coal sources of power? How serious is the country in the shift towards safe, clean, and sustainable energy technologies?

What’s happening now

In the course of the past few years, the Philippines has begun its journey in transitioning to a mix of renewable energy sources – a combination of distributed solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources. It was feasible not just economically, but also financially and environmentally, due to its long-term benefits. However, environmental advocates are all clamoring for clarity and resolution in regulatory concerns, barriers, and obstacles, in order to move forward in the RE roadmap.

Breaking it down to costs

What’s happening now

The question is: how much does it come down to in terms of cost per kilowatt-hour (kWh)? The levelized cost is typically Php2.50 to Php4.00 per kWh. Rooftop solar delivers energy that is lower in cost than the traditional coal power plants. This is why renewable energy investments are streaming in from international organizations – because large scale commercial and industrial solar mini-grids and power plants can produce electricity at cheaper rates.
