INTEGRATING DESIGN FOR A FUTURE SOLAR BUILD

INTEGRATING DESIGN FOR A FUTURE SOLAR BUILD

The trend of going green

With the increasing awareness of climate change and global warming, people are starting to look for green alternatives. From using eco bags and switching to metal and wooden straws, many are looking for ways on how to make a positive contribution and lessen their negative impact on the environment – thus, the concept of planning, designing, and building your green home. Going green is the new trend!

Designing green homes is not foreign to our ears. A lot of people are not just referring to green homes by building it with recyclable or eco-friendly materials – green homes also refer to houses that are designed to be environmentally self-sustainable. This includes homes that use and maximize sustainable sources of energy.

What solar-ready actually means

What solar-ready actually means

Usually, the homeowners approach the architects and contractors because they want to “go solar.” Incorporating solar-ready design in homes can help lessen construction costs in the long run by reducing the need for future upgrades. Home and building designs can be upgraded today to maximize the potential of solar installations. This makes the future solar system more cost-effective and feasible.

The concept of a solar-ready home, building, or facility refers to designing and building an establishment that is built and equipped in a way that solar technology can easily be integrated when the owner decides to have one. This optimizes the installation of solar after the establishment is constructed. This would also make the solar installation easier and more ready to install in case the client has a tight budget and doesn’t allow the installation of the PV system at the current time.

How do you design a solar-ready home?

There are several factors to consider when designing a solar-ready home, building, or facility. In taking the following elements into consideration, you can be ensured that your system will be more efficient.

  1. Building shape and structure
  2. Roof type, plane, orientation, tilt
  3. Solar system type
  4. Shading
  5. Spacing availability for conduits
  6. Plumbing fixtures, skylights, etc.
  7. Electrical wiring condition
  8. Tapping point area
  9. Structural assessment
  10. Mounting structure and racking system

THE SHIFT TO RENEWABLES

THE SHIFT TO RENEWABLES

Let’s talk about power plants

Electricity is the most exciting form of energy that human beings have discovered so far. Power plant boilers, steam turbines, and generators are three driving forces in a power station. The power plant boiler is the primary source of steam in most utility and industrial facilities.

Yet the fact remains

Yet the fact remains

With the power of common electricity comes the other half of the story. Did you know that burning tons of coal is needed in order to power a plant boiler so as to produce electricity? In the earlier days, this cause-effect action-reaction fact was inconsequential. Now, however, we are experiencing the by-products of fossil fuel power plant operation. We now have to consider long-term global consequences.

The science behind fossil fuel combustion

Fossil fuel power plant operation results in by-products. The combustion of fossil fuels results in gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapor. Such substances are pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. Coal-fired plants result in mercury, fly ash, and other traces of metals. Imagine all these elements discharged into the air that we breathe. Now, carbon dioxide and other pollution in the air are what lead to the ozone layer depletion or the gradual thinning of the upper atmosphere of the earth’s surface. Due to various human activities, the chemical compounds that contain gas released to the air is what causes climate change. The result? Humans suffering in extreme temperatures.

Then there’s climate change

They say 2019 really is the hottest year in recorded human history. Yes, the last four years were the hottest years in terms of global temperature records. This validates ongoing, continuing, long-term climate change. Yes, there is in fact an urgent need to address global warming and climate change. The planet is experiencing increased temperatures and extreme weather conditions, including more constant natural disasters. The sea ice cover is melting in the Arctic and Antarctica. The ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctic are getting smaller. This is the reality of 2019. What will happen in the coming years?

What now?

The global goal is to reduce or eradicate greenhouse gases. How? Renewable energy. Make that shift to renewable energy in order to reduce carbon footprint, reduce waste, reduce gas emissions, and steer the planet towards a clean, safe, healthy, and sustainable future. Solar is in high demand because it is a strong power source that everyone can utilize. Using photovoltaics, the sun’s energy is converted to electricity.

What you can do about it

What you can do about it

Everyone can take part in saving the environment. Simply investing in rooftop solar is already one surefire way to protect the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

“It is time for serious changes for the sake of the next generation,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. “We need to take global warming and climate change seriously. We need to go to battle and the only way to come through is to shift to a sustainable lifestyle with renewable energy.”

ROOFTOP SOLAR: PROS AND CONS

ROOFTOP SOLAR: PROS AND CONS

Weighing the Advantages and Disadvantages of Rooftop Solar

The science behind rooftop solar

The science behind rooftop solar

The sun is known to be a powerful source of energy, having provided light and heat for thousands of years, shining energy that can be harnessed by installing solar panels on the rooftop. Fact tidbit: The energy that the sun provides our planet for one hour can fulfill the global energy needs of the planet for one year. This is why solar is now a very hot topic and is the most trending energy in renewables. It has a wide range of benefits and advantages, especially when compared to other sources of energy. Let us look closely and determine if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

The Advantages of Solar

The Advantages of Solar

  • Use a clean, safe, healthy, sustainable and renewable energy source

This is the most crucial and most important fact about solar. It is available daily every time the sun is out, and we will not run out of sunlight for at least another 5 billion years.

  • Pay lower electricity costs

No matter which part of the world you live in, if you go solar, you will harvest the sun’s energy whenever the sun is out. As a result, you will use less power from the grid, and this translates to lower electricity expenses. The size of your solar panel system will determine how much savings you will experience. Additionally, if you go solar with a grid-tie system, you can get credited for the excess power generated by your system. This power, which is exported to the grid, will translate to even more savings.

  • Protect the planet

When you are on solar, you will be using power from a clean energy source. This means you will not be contributing to the burning of fossil fuels. In other words, this means you will have a lower carbon footprint. In essence, you are helping the rest of the world battle climate change and global warming with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. In simple words, you are helping to save and protect the planet.

The Disadvantages of Solar

The Disadvantages of Solar

  • Cost

In the past, purchasing a solar panel system was expensive. Equipment prices were high and typically included: solar panels, batteries, inverters, wires, installation, and more. Now, however, with further advancements in solar technologies, other types of systems have become more popular and batteries are no longer necessary in grid-tie systems. Solar panel prices have dropped down dramatically. This has paved the way for much lower costs of solar systems, making it more financially and economically feasible to purchase one outright.

  • Storage is still expensive

As mentioned, batteries are expensive, and they are required for energy storage. In power-starved areas or in areas where grid power supply is intermittent, then off-grid systems or hybrid systems are more ideal. In such cases, batteries are required in order to store solar energy that cannot be collected during the night time. The prices of batteries have not decreased, despite increased demand in the market today.

  • Solar systems take up space and are heavy

Naturally, solar panels take up space and weigh about 20 kilograms each. Rooftop solar will only be ideal if the structural assessment of the roof is considered and recommended as viable.

Now that advantages vs. disadvantages have been explored, it is evident that the advantages of solar far outweigh the disadvantages in terms of substance and long-term results. Think about the benefits and the future generation.

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER

THE BIGGER, THE BETTER

Making the Right Choice:

Small Solar Panel System vs. Big Solar Panel System

The demand is unbelievable

Solar is in demand in today’s era of power generation. The Philippines, a tropical country geographically situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, has enormous potential for renewable energy, specifically solar. Filipinos are driving the green agenda forward.

In 2011, solar energy produced one-tenth of the global energy demand. Solar was becoming popular fast at the time. People all over the world were beginning to understand that the sun’s energy can be harnessed, using solar panels that can be affixed on the rooftop of houses or buildings. Soon enough, residential and commercial establishments started harvesting the sun’s power, thereby experiencing the trade-off when they noticed the 50% to 70% decrease in their monthly electric bills.

In 2014, the most influential companies in the world joined forces and committed themselves to 100% renewable power through the establishment of RE100. The collaboration was a global initiative that united more than a hundred influential organizations. Among these are Microsoft, Google, and Coca Cola. Since then, they have been working hand in hand in accelerating the growth of RE to transition us to a healthier and more sustainable world and future.

“In the Philippines, approximately 20 million people are in locations which lack constant and consistent power supply. About 12 million Filipinos are in power-starved areas, which have zero power supply. The demand is clearly there. Solar is not just an option – it’s a necessity,” emphasized Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp.

The question is: does solar make sense?

The question is: does solar make sense?

It’s a perennial question. People talk about a safe, clean, healthy, and sustainable future. They talk about reducing greenhouse gas emissions to zero. They talk about 2050 being a low-carbon-footprint era with efficient green facilities, e-vehicles, and solar homes. Imagine that as the destiny of the planet. The solar trend now is all about being a #ZeroBill home. Solar energy has definitely taken the lead in renewable energy in the Philippines, plus it makes financial and economic sense.

The next question is: does size matter?

The goal is free electricity, unli-electricity during daytime, or cheap electricity. Either way, people indulge when the deal is good. In any case, size matters – on the topic of solar – because size is directly related to the harvest which is directly related to the savings. With a solar system, the homeowner can be a consumer and producer of power at the same time. That means you don’t just use the power, you produce it too. When you produce more than what you need, you can get credits for the excess power that your system generates. Now with a small system, you will not generate more power than you can consume. With a big system, you can definitely generate more power than you can consume. With a big system, your surplus power goes to the grid and can be used by someone else, and you get credits for it. This translates to a lower monthly bill. That means you enjoy the benefits of your solar. So, does size matter? You tell us.

A large solar power system makes more sense financially and environmentally for some homeowners. Not only does an enormous solar system increase property value, it also greatly reduces the carbon footprint and contributes to a cleaner planet.

Breaking it down in simple terms

Breaking it down in simple terms

It is pretty straightforward and simple. Put plenty of solar panels on your roof and generate enough power. Then, export this power to the electric company through the Net Metering Program. In doing this, you get paid for the electricity that you will export. The #ZeroBill phenomenon is actually a benefit from being a consumer and provider.

READY TO GO SOLAR?

READY TO GO SOLAR?

8 Steps to Going Grid Tie Solar

The boom of solar in Asia

The Renewable Energy (RE) sector in Southeast Asia is booming. Installed capacity is expected to triple this year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia are kicking off the transition to renewables into high gear this 2019.

“Initial records from independent solar companies reveal that 2 Megawatts (MW) were installed in the year 2016, comprising of 473 net metered facilities. In 2017, this increased to 6MW. In 2018, the data reflected a cumulative figure of 19.6MW registered installs under Energy Regulatory Commission,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and President of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

“Developers are constructing solar power plants all over the country, from mini to large scale. We expect them to be completed by 2020,” added De Guzman. “With the Philippines’ fast-growing energy demand, then the country’s power policies are bound to improve and be more pro-consumer, on top of incentives for solar PV development. In Indonesia, overall RE growth seems to be at a standstill because of uncertainty in policies. I’m confident that we will not find ourselves in the same boat.”

The solar rise residential

Millions of homes have already gone solar in the Philippines, and more and more homeowners are now considering going solar. If you are contemplating going solar, then you have probably researched solar panel installation systems and different solar companies. There are eight major steps that go behind a solar system installation. The Solaric Digital Squad has outlined a simple step-by-step guide for homeowners to make going solar easy for you.

Step One: Site Visit

Step One: Site Visit

A team of engineers needs to visit the site (residence or commercial facility) to evaluate various factors: roof type, roof condition, angle or slope, solar system type, structural foundation, electrical status, wiring, the electric bill, power consumption, daytime appliances, tapping point, and multiple other elements. The engineers will also take measurements.

Step Two: Selecting Equipment

After the site survey and assessment, a Site Survey Report will be prepared by the slew of energy professionals. The engineers will then turn over the report to the Sales Team, which will then be responsible for preparing a proposal with several options. The options include various brands and different solar equipment, which the homeowners will need to go over and select which option best suits their needs and goals.

Step Three: Contract Signing

Step Three: Contract Signing

The two primary components of a solar panel system are the solar panels and the inverters. Always consider efficiency, reputation, price, aesthetics, and durability when choosing solar equipment. After finalizing the option best suited for the homeowner, the contract is then signed and a go signal is given to the installation team.

Step Four: Permits

Step Four: Permits

There are logistical paperwork and documentation that go behind every solar panel system installation, just as with any major decision. These documents and permits may vary depending on the location or city and may include: Barangay Permit, Barangay Clearance, Permit to Install, Building Permit, etc. The solar company you choose may assist you with securing such permits, and it would be best if you select a solar partner who can offer this as part of their package.

Step Five: Installation

Step Five: Installation

Now that you’ve chosen your panels and inverters, your installation has been scheduled and your equipment is ready. The solar installers and electricians will begin by preparing your roof, then work on the electrical wiring, then install the racking and mounting structure, the panels, and inverters. The timeline for the installation varies, depending on the system size that you selected and the number of solar professionals working on your project.

Step Six: Energization

Step Six: Energization

This is considered to be the most exciting time of solar panel system installation: energization. It is the final step of going solar and it is your actual “Go Live” day. The solar team will conduct a final inspection, double-check, and verify everything in accordance with standard electrical codes and solar industry practices.

Step Seven: Interconnection and Net Metering

Step Seven: Interconnection and Net Metering

The process for Net Metering will now come into play, which will be mostly coordination between the homeowner, solar company, city hall, and utility company in facilitating and processing the requirements in order to obtain the approved Net Metering application. Once approved, the meter may be replaced. The grid-tie solar system is now officially interconnected to the grid.

Step Eight: Maintenance

Step Eight: Maintenance

Owning a grid-tie system is low maintenance. The recommended option is to simply have it professionally cleaned and thoroughly checked annually by solar experts.

LG IS THE NEW LV!

LG hits One Million watts

LG hits One Million watts

Savvy customers always call Solaric for their solar energy needs. September was indeed a milestone for the king of rooftop solar – because the latest reports revealed that Solaric installed more than One Million watts of LG solar panels from South Korea. Yes, it is indeed the same LG we are all too familiar with, from their aircon to phones and televisions, and now even solar panels.

One million watts of solar is absolutely a significant point because it represents the energy equivalent of charging one million cellphones or saving several tanker trucks of oil from being burned. It has the carbon saving footprint equivalent of planting hundreds of hectares of virgin forest.

“Majority of our LG solar clients invest serious amounts of firepower into the system because it is what makes their electric meters spin backwards. This essentially shares positive energy to our power-starved grid. Done in scale, this can reduce the cost of energy for all of us, because less diesel peaker plants are needed,” said solar guru Mike De Guzman, the President of Solaric Corp. and Vice President of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

Introducing the LG solar panels

Introducing the LG solar panels

“The LG solar panels form part of our topnotch Class A offerings for our extraordinary clients. LG gives us a full 25-year warranty for their modules. Class-leading Neon2 solar cells to gather the most harvest from very sunny to rainy weather, plus space-saving efficiencies that enable our fabled #ZeroBill builds with less solar panels installed!”

Tell me more

Solar clients need a solar company that will deliver a turnkey solution from start to finish. The solar company needs to evaluate, design, and install quality solar products.

Tell me more

This residence has a 17.55 kWp Grid Tie Solar System with 54 units of 325W LG solar panels. It has a monthly power output of 2,369.25 kilowatt-hours (kWh), which translates to monthly savings of Php26,061.75. This equates to yearly savings of Php312,741. With an all-inclusive system cost of Php1.3M, ROI will be achieved in 3.8 years, and that does not include additional savings from exported energy during daytime through Meralco’s Net Metering program.

In the 17.55 kWp grid-tie solar system shown above, the reduced carbon footprint translates to savings from 83,512 liters of gasoline consumed. More importantly, the system’s effect on the environment is similar to planting 4,990 trees!

“We value each installation and treat it as if it were our own home on the line. And we do this every single time, every single installation, one roof at a time. One thing that sets Solaric apart from other solar companies is its wide range of equipment and solar panel brands. The equipment is sourced factory-direct, with flexible build options to fit most budgets and consumer demands of geopolitical sourcing concerns,” elaborated De Guzman.

One’s home is a personal testament to their success – it is a refuge; your castle with unli-aircon. Solaric on your home is not a status symbol, but an affirmative action on how you act on environmental issues and beat the ugly trend of global warming and climate change. Solar on your roof means you advocate renewable energy and that is what Solaric style with LG is all about.

LG is the new LV – because climate change is out of style.

HEALTH AND SAFETY TRULY MATTERS AT SOLARIC

Why health and safety are of utmost importance

All jobs are associated with some levels of risk, and solar installation projects are no different. Installing rooftop PV solar systems is a high-risk activity because it involves working at various heights, lifting and moving solar panels, transporting and hauling heavy loads and fragile materials, and dealing with dangerous heavy machinery and equipment. Solar PV installers are also prone to the risks of conventional roofing, carpentry, and faulty electrical work. The crucial issue of risk management – if not taken seriously – can cause problems and emergencies on site.

The difference between life and death is a fine line. Safety is a serious issue. Failure to implement health and safety guidelines and programs may result not only in serious injuries for workers on-site but could also lead to damage to equipment and property.

At Solaric, the safety of the solar PV installers requires considerations for safe work areas, proper use of tools and equipment, safety practices for personnel protection, and awareness of safety hazards and how to avoid them. The company has also specific measures for managing solar energy safely.

What is PPE?

What is PPE?

Personal Protective Equipment, otherwise commonly referred to as PPE, includes protective clothing, gloves, footwear, helmets, goggles, harnesses, respirators, aprons or other garments specifically designed to protect workers and personnel from injuries to body impacts, electrical hazards, heat and chemicals, and other job-related or site-related hazards. PPE is needed to reduce risks from common safety issues. Practicing preventive measures in the workplace will aid in mitigating possible job injuries.

Different risks exist for every business

Solaric solar experts take the issue of health and safety very seriously. The company ensures that all their personnel has had all the relevant training needed to turn on the sun for everyone – properly, efficiently, and safely.

Not all homes are built the same way and solar projects vary from case to case. Simple solar installations may not require a lot of safety measures, yet more complex ones need to be assessed each step of the way and in much more depth. Needless to say, all installations are risky, hence it is essential that a site survey is conducted prior to project implementation. During the assessment, aside from conducting a comprehensive analysis of the roof and the site, risks are identified and appropriate precautions are developed. These are vital to ensure that the necessary equipment and systems are provided and implemented.

We pride ourselves in excellence

We pride ourselves in excellence

HOW SOLAR AND RENEWABLES CAN SAVE THE CLIMATE

HOW SOLAR AND RENEWABLES CAN SAVE THE CLIMATE

What’s up with carbon emissions?

What’s up with carbon emissions?

Carbon dioxide emissions are usually associated with and caused by the burning of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. Globally this year, carbon emissions hit 415 parts per million. This rate of carbon emissions would mean that the atmospheric carbon will be catastrophic in less than 15 years. The entire world is now already experiencing the effects of such, including the Philippines. We are now finally understanding that the effects include hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, and more devastating typhoons and natural disasters.

What can we do?

“Given our environmental predicament, I think it’s crucial for the Philippines to start investing aggressively in climate adaptation and to adjust responsibly to changes caused by climate change and global warming,” said Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

Adaptation or mitigation?

Adaptation or mitigation?

According to Wikipedia, the top five nations with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in the year 2017 were China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan. They will need to make that big switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. It is clear that adaptation comes hand in hand with mitigation because we need to reduce the carbon footprint of the planet.

What now?

Unfortunately, despite global efforts and even the Paris Agreement, fossil fuels still account for more than 2/3 of the world’s energy requirements. Even worse, carbon emission continues to increase because of increased fossil fuel consumption. Despite these facts and globally available updates, coal plant capacity is set to expand in various parts of the world, including the Philippines, which wants to double coal plant capacity.

“It is in the interest of our country to put her foot down and start implementing real action steps towards a clean, safe, and sustainable future. The good news is that solar is now widely available in the mainstream. The cost is competitive and within the same range of the cost of fossil fuel sources,” added De Guzman.

BEWARE OF FLY-BY-NIGHT SOLAR INSTALLERS

BEWARE OF FLY-BY-NIGHT SOLAR INSTALLERS

Be aware

It is crucial to be able to recognize a fly-by-night solar company before hiring them to install solar. Be aware that there are many companies out there with one overall purpose: to scam you. These kinds of companies will make promises that they do not intend to keep, and they will take your money and disappear.

What are the signs?

What are the signs?

To be able to recognize a fly-by-night company or a scam, you have to be able to recognize the signs of such companies or organizations:

  • They make promises that seem illogical, impractical, or out of this world
  • They charge much lower prices than competitors
  • They have very few client testimonials available with the media
  • They ignore you after you have paid for services
  • They do not have a physical office address
  • They do not have corporate bank accounts and accept cash only

There are many other signs that indicate the illegitimate or scam nature of a company. It is best to always do your due diligence when engaging a company for its services.

In the Philippines

In the Philippines, such solar scammers are known as “guerilla installers” of solar panels. The questionable quality of the panels is the ultimate problem, and the public has been warned by the Department of Energy about engaging with such suppliers.

“Fake panels or improperly installed panels are serious hazards. They can cause fires and disasters which will result in fatalities. We have to learn to take solar seriously. It is about electricity and power and energy. When choosing a solar provider, you have to choose carefully and wisely. Make sure you do your research – reputation, reliability, services, value, testimonials, the works. We have been asked to come in and fix solar messes of other companies, but sometimes it is just too late. Don’t make the same mistake,” warned Solaric President Mike De Guzman.

ROOFTOP SOLAR: SHOULD YOU GET IT?

ROOFTOP SOLAR: SHOULD YOU GET IT?

Does solar make sense?

Does solar make sense?

Homeowners, business owners, and entrepreneurs have varying opinions and technical knowledge of the solar industry. Although most are aware of the advantages of solar, there is little grasp on the market, its long-term effects, and the deciding factors that go behind large capacity solar systems. Hundreds of Fortune 500 companies have gotten on board with renewable energy and adopting low carbon footprint energy sources. With the eco-aware planet of 2019, it is wise to start considering going solar at some point in the near future – not just as a strategic financial decision but also to play your role in protecting the environment.

Yes, solar is not just for the big ones. Every household and business should invest and capitalize on solar. Everyone should take advantage of the renewable energy opportunities available now in the Philippines. Installing a solar power system is a key decision that guarantees a solid financial return. In the first five years after going solar, you will achieve a return on investment. In the next twenty years that follow, you will profit. There are three main reasons why anyone goes solar: to go green, to save money, and to profit.

As long as you have a roof

As long as you have a roof

Any home or business with a roof can install solar and benefit from this low carbon source of energy: factories, warehouses, office buildings, cold storage facilities, restaurants, car dealerships, BPOs, schools, hospitals, and city halls. Once the home or facility has a solar panel system installed, the homeowner or business can register for Net Metering. Through the net metering program, they can sell their surplus solar energy to the grid (or to the utility company). With the grid-tie solar panel system, it does not need batteries because the system blends utility power with solar power. The system is automatically synchronized. Bill reductions typically average between 30% to 70%, depending on the capacity of the solar power system. Installing a solar power system is a wise, strategic, significant, business decision and investment that provides energy savings for 25 years. In essence, it means free power in the long term.

“Every six square meters of solar panels on the roof can produce about 1,500 to 1,700 kWh of energy each year, which translates to the energy content in a barrel of oil. For those who want to be green, clean, and sustainable, then solar is the way to go,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp.
