The science behind fossil fuel combustion

Fossil fuel power plant operation results in by-products. The combustion of fossil fuels results in gas containing carbon dioxide and water vapor. Such substances are pollutants, including nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides. Coal-fired plants result in mercury, fly ash, and other traces of metals. Imagine all these elements discharged into the air that we breathe. 8 Steps to Going Grid Tie Solar

The boom of solar in Asia

The Renewable Energy (RE) sector in Southeast Asia is booming. Installed capacity is expected to triple this year. The Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia are kicking off the transition to renewables into high gear this 2019.

“Initial records from independent solar companies reveal that 2 Megawatts (MW) were installed in the year 2016, comprising of 473 net metered facilities. In 2017, this increased to 6MW. In 2018, the data reflected a cumulative figure of 19.6MW registered installs under Energy Regulatory Commission,” said Mike De Guzman, President of Solaric Corp. and President of Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA).

“Developers are constructing solar power plants all over the country, from mini to large scale. We expect them to be completed by 2020,” added De Guzman. “With the Philippines’ fast-growing energy demand, then the country’s power policies are bound to improve and be more pro-consumer, on top of incentives for solar PV development. In Indonesia, overall RE growth seems to be at a standstill because of uncertainty in policies. I’m confident that we will not find ourselves in the same boat.”

The solar rise residential

Millions of homes have already gone solar in the Philippines, and more and more homeowners are now considering going solar. If you are contemplating going solar, then you have probably researched solar panel installation systems and different solar companies. There are eight major steps that go behind a solar system installation. The Solaric Digital Squad has outlined a simple step-by-step guide for homeowners to make going solar easy for you.

Step One: Site Visit

A team of engineers needs to visit the site (residence or commercial facility) to evaluate various factors: roof type, roof condition, angle or slope, solar system type, structural foundation, electrical status, wiring, the electric bill, power consumption, daytime appliances, tapping point, and multiple other elements. The engineers will also take measurements.

Step Two: Selecting Equipment

After the site survey and assessment, a Site Survey Report will be prepared by the slew of energy professionals. The engineers will then turn over the report to the Sales Team, which will then be responsible for preparing a proposal with several options. The options include various brands and different solar equipment, which the homeowners will need to go over and select which option best suits their needs and goals.

Step Three: Contract Signing

The two primary components of a solar panel system are the solar panels and the inverters. Always consider efficiency, reputation, price, aesthetics, and durability when choosing solar equipment. After finalizing the option best suited for the homeowner, the contract is then signed and a go signal is given to the installation team.

Step Four: Permits

There are logistical paperwork and documentation that go behind every solar panel system installation, just as with any major decision. These documents and permits may vary depending on the location or city and may include: Barangay Permit, Barangay Clearance, Permit to Install, Building Permit, etc. The solar company you choose may assist you with securing such permits, and it would be best if you select a solar partner who can offer this as part of their package.

Step Five: Installation

Now that you’ve chosen your panels and inverters, your installation has been scheduled and your equipment is ready. The solar installers and electricians will begin by preparing your roof, then work on the electrical wiring, then install the racking and mounting structure, the panels, and inverters. The timeline for the installation varies, depending on the system size that you selected and the number of solar professionals working on your project.

Step Six: Energization

This is considered to be the most exciting time of solar panel system installation: energization. It is the final step of going solar and it is your actual “Go Live” day. The solar team will conduct a final inspection, double-check, and verify everything in accordance with standard electrical codes and solar industry practices.

Step Seven: Interconnection and Net Metering

The process for Net Metering will now come into play, which will be mostly coordination between the homeowner, solar company, city hall, and utility company in facilitating and processing the requirements in order to obtain the approved Net Metering application. Once approved, the meter may be replaced. The grid-tie solar system is now officially interconnected to the grid.

Step Eight: Maintenance

Owning a grid-tie system is low maintenance. The recommended option is to simply have it professionally cleaned and thoroughly checked annually by solar experts.

What’s up with carbon emissions?

Carbon dioxide emissions are usually associated with and caused by the burning of fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas. Globally this year, carbon emissions hit 415 parts per million. This rate of carbon emissions would mean that the atmospheric carbon will be catastrophic in less than 15 years. The entire world is now already experiencing the effects of such, including the Philippines. We are now finally understanding that the effects include hotter temperatures, rising sea levels, and more devastating typhoons and natural disasters.

What can we do?

“Given our environmental predicament, I think it’s crucial for the Philippines to start investing aggressively in climate adaptation and to adjust responsibly to changes caused by climate change and global warming,” said Jade De Guzman, Vice President of Solaric Corp.

Adaptation or mitigation?

According to Wikipedia, the top five nations with the highest carbon dioxide emissions in the year 2017 were China, the United States, India, Russia, and Japan. Despite these facts and globally available updates, coal plant capacity is set to expand in various parts of the world, including the Philippines, which wants to double coal plant capacity.

“It is in the interest of our country to put her foot down and start implementing real action steps towards a clean, safe, and sustainable future. The good news is that solar is now widely available in the mainstream. The cost is competitive and within the same range of the cost of fossil fuel sources,” added De Guzman.

BEWARE OF FLY-BY-NIGHT SOLAR INSTALLERS

Be aware

It is crucial to be able to recognize a fly-by-night solar company before hiring them to install solar. Be aware that there are many companies out there with one overall purpose: to scam you. These kinds of companies will make promises that they do not intend to keep, and they will take your money and disappear.

What are the signs?

To be able to recognize a fly-by-night company or a scam, you have to be able to recognize the signs of such companies or organizations:

They make promises that seem illogical, impractical, or out of this world
They charge much lower prices than competitors
They have very few client testimonials available with the media
They ignore you after you have paid for services
They do not have a physical office address
They do not have corporate bank accounts and accept cash only

There are many other signs that indicate the illegitimate or scam nature of a company. It is best to always do your due diligence when engaging a company for its services.

In the Philippines

In the Philippines, such solar scammers are known as “guerilla installers” of solar panels. The questionable quality of the panels is the ultimate problem, and the public has been warned by the Department of Energy about engaging with such suppliers.

“Fake panels or improperly installed panels are serious hazards. They can cause fires and disasters which will result in fatalities. We have to learn to take solar seriously. It is about electricity and power and energy. When choosing a solar provider, you have to choose carefully and wisely. Make sure you do your research – reputation, reliability, services, value, testimonials, the works. We have been asked to come in and fix solar messes of other companies, but sometimes it is just too late. Don’t make the same mistake,” warned Solaric President Mike De Guzman.
