SOLAR AND POWER OUTAGES

Every single year, we are plagued with news of rotational brownouts due to the thinning supply of electricity in our grid.

Earlier this month, the Department of Energy (DOE), raised yellow and red alerts for three straight days, and gave a warning to the electricity consumers of rotational brownouts in some areas. Yellow alerts are raised when the power reserves are thin and a red alert when there is an insufficient energy reserve that may result in rotational power interruptions. To add salt to the injury, there is also a possibility of electricity rates going up due to the insufficient power supply and increase of electricity prices in WESM. The DOE indicated that the supply issues were caused by the sudden shutdowns and extended scheduled maintenance of some of the large power generation plants.

The recent hot temperatures are one of the huge factors in the increased energy demand. Time never goes backwards, and with the increasing population and new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is one stark realization. If we do not produce solutions to address the problems, the Philippines will continue to suffer yearly power outages which can lead to a worse power supply outage and higher electricity costs. HOW DOES HEAT AFFECT YOUR SOLAR PANELS?

With the recent temperatures reaching up to 45 degrees in some parts of the country, some people may wonder, how does heat affect their solar panels?

First, we have to understand how solar panels function. Although sunlight and heat are always correlated to each other, these two factors affect the performance of your solar energy system differently. While heat does not reduce the amount of energy harvested by your panels, it does have an impact on how energy is produced inside the cells. This is because solar panels generate energy through the sun’s light and not heat. In fact, the higher the temperatures, the lesser the efficiency of your solar panels which causes energy losses and a drop in your system performance.

Temperature Coefficient

A solar panel’s performance relative to a given temperature or temperature coefficient varies from brand to brand and is important in calculating an accurate production level of your solar energy system, which is why it is important to choose the best solar panels for your roof that will be efficient given the tropical climate of the Philippines. Most of the solar panels that Solaric offers has a coefficient between -0.35 to -0.5. The temperature coefficient will tell you how much power a solar panel loses for every 1° increase in temperatures above 25°C.

For example, a solar panel has a temperature coefficient of -0.35% per 1°C. So with every one-degree increase above 25°C, the solar panel’s efficiency will decrease by 0.35%.

Reducing the heat’s effects

The effects of heat on your solar energy system is inevitable especially during the summer when the heat is on its peak which is why it is important to look for an experienced and knowledgeable solar provider that will correctly install solar panels in your roof. The right installer will install panels at the right angle to make sure you will still be able to harvest the maximum sunlight as possible while allowing a convective air flow to cool the panels.
