ENERGY EFFICIENCY vs. ENERGY CONSERVATION

Close up of solar panels

Energy efficiency can be defined as using less energy to attain the same outcome or results, therefore reducing energy waste. Though it is commonly being affiliated with ‘energy conservation’, the two things are completely different. How does energy efficiency affect our battle against climate change and how can it be connected to solar energy? Read on to know the difference between energy efficiency vs energy conservation

Efficiency or conservation

Solar grids on roof

Energy efficiency can be attributed to technological improvements throughout the years. One good example is how we have energy-saving light bulbs (LED) that uses less energy compared to the old traditional bulbs but still provide the same amount of light. Energy efficiency are important factors in reducing carbon emissions and lowering energy costs especially now that more people are looking into green energy for their appliances and gadgets. This is furtherly expanded by substituting coal and fossil fuel with renewable energy sources such as solar.

Unlike ‘energy conservation’, which is a common practice for Filipinos to use less energy by changing your routines and way of living by “making tipid”, energy efficiency calls for the same quality of living while using less energy. Energy efficiency can reduce the strain in energy demand and environmental problems by providing innovations on how we produce and utilize energy without sacrificing convenience.

The steady progress

Solar grids by solaric

Advances in technology show significant breakthroughs in providing a cleaner and sustainable future.  The development of thinner and flexible solar panels has made it more space efficient without sacrificing energy harvest with size. With each passing year, a lot of solar panel manufacturers have developed and provided us higher efficiencies to improve energy cost and downsize the manufacturing expenses – making solar systems affordable and consumer-friendly.

Upgrades in energy efficiency and storage can highly contribute to the overall goal in reducing greenhouse gas and less reliance to fossil fuels. Improvements in solar energy efficiency contribute to lower costs of installing solar power systems. The end result is that more people will shift to cleaner sources of energy, and this will enable a cleaner and healthier environment.

BUILDING A SOLAR-READY HOME

A home with solar grids

Designing a solar ready home is a good step to minimize construction and installation costs especially if you are exploring the possibility of future upgrades. Integrating your home design to a future solar build will maximize the solar system’s potential and make the installation easier and hassle free.

Allot good roof space, tilt and orientation

Roof space with solar panels

To make the most of your solar, providing optimal placement and good roof space for your solar panels will result in higher efficiency of the system. It is best to orient the solar panels towards what is referred to as the ‘solar window’, for the system to receive the maximum amount of solar energy at any time. In Metro Manila, the ideal set up is to face the panels towards the “True South”, with tilt of between 10 to 20 degrees.

Be careful of the possibility of shading

Make sure that your roof is free from any obstructions that may later on cause shading on the panels that will be installed (such as trees, antennas, or surrounding buildings). Carefully plan where to put the vents, skylight, or heater, and place them where they cannot affect the solar panels.

Does that mean I have to sacrifice on design?

Organized solar grids

Not really. In fact, the whole concept of a solar-ready home is to design the establishment to be more well-built and solar equipped when a homeowner finally decides to install one. The homeowner can approach their architects and contractors to better incorporate your home design with solar. This can be a huge breather especially since constructing a home and installing solar can be an expensive combination. Preparing your home to be solar ready will make your future solar installation easier – like plug and play.

CADR: CLEAN AIR DELIVERY RATE

There are many factors to consider when you decide to purchase an air purifier and one of them is the CADR rating. As air purifiers become more a necessity during this pandemic, how does an air purifier’s CADR rating affect its performance and effectivity?

What is CADR rating?

Clean Air Delivery Rate or CADR is the rate on how fast an air purifier can clean the air based on the size of a particular area. CADR rating is measured in cubic feet per minute (m3/h) and is usually for the harmful particles that can be found in the air such as dust, hair, allergens, and smoke. The higher your unit’s CADR rating, the higher the area its fan power can cover. In selecting the ideal air purifier, keep in mind that the higher the CADR, the better.

AirSAFE’s CADR

Solaric has developed its AirSAFE units to accommodate every possible area size it will be used in. There are currently 3 models out available in the AirSAFE series: AS40, AS95 and AS-MAX. All of them offer good CADR quality built for different room sizes. The AirSAFE40 (AS40) is good for 11-22sqm rooms with CADR rating of 150m3h – perfect for residential use. A bigger unit called AirSAFE95 (AS95) is available for rooms with 34-58sqm in size. It has a higher CADR rating (488m3h) compared to other units available in the market, yet have the same application area capacity. Solaric also released its limited edition model known as the AirSAFE-MAX (AS-MAX) which is built for more industrial and commercial use, and for larger areas (59-96sqm) with a great CADR rate of an astonishing 800m3h. This industrial quad filter juggernaut is perfect for public places where people usually gather around such as lobbies, receiving areas, banks, and restaurants.

WHAT SOLAR SYSTEM IS BEST FOR YOU?

Solar expert installing solar system

Deciding to put solar on your roof is a big investment to make and you want to make sure that the installed system is correct and tailor-made to your needs. There are 3 kinds of solar system currently available in the market: Grid-Tie, Off Grid, and Hybrid system – each catering to different situations, conditions, and client expectations for a solar system. How do the three differ from each other?

Grid Tie System

Grid Tie System by Solaric

Grid tie system is the most popular and practical build for homeowners especially in Metro Manila and areas where there is a stable supply of grid power. A grid tie system is interconnected to the grid, meaning that during daytime, the power that your house uses comes from your solar, and during night time, the grid supplies your electricity. This system uses a grid-tie inverter which regulates the power coming from your panels and increases the voltage slightly higher from the grid to make sure that solar will be your first priority power. In case your solar underperforms and fails to deliver the power needed by your household due to cloudy weather or system failure, it automatically switches your source back to the grid, making it seamless and preventing any unwanted power interruption. However, since it is ‘tied’ to the grid, no grid power means no solar power even though the sun is shining brightly outside.

A grid tie system is good for homeowners who are looking more into monthly savings from their monthly electric bills. The grid tie investment has the fastest ROI among the various solar system options, thanks to the Net Metering Program – wherein you can sell any excess or unused power to the grid and earn credits. In doing this, you can use those credits to offset nighttime consumption, and the result is a significantly reduced electric bill.

Off-Grid System

An independent system on its own, an off-grid system is built to stand alone which means it operates without having power from the grid at all. The off-grid is perfect for power-starved areas that do not get any power supply from their electric utility, or areas that constantly suffer from grid failures. The off-grid system includes power storage and needs batteries to work. In this type of system, power is stored to the battery to be able to provide electricity all the time. This system is high maintenance and can be costly because of the occasional battery and charge controller replacements.

Hybrid System

When you want an over-all energy security system, the hybrid system is perfect for you. A hybrid system is a mix of a grid tie and off-grid system, hence the term hybrid. It also has batteries, similar to an off-grid setup but at the same time, you are also connected to the grid. This system can be programmed to sell the excess power to the grid or use it to charge the batteries, which you can later use during the night or during power outages. A hybrid system is likewise higher in cost compared to a grid tie, and will also require you to maintain and replace the batteries from time to time.

Have you found the perfect solar setup for you? Contact the solar experts now so we can recommend and design the perfect system for you, depending on your needs.

BE MORE THAN SURE – BE AIRSAFE.

Graphics of airsafe parts

Solaric engineers in the early days of the pandemic decided to make their own air purifier for the COVID-19 threat internally when nothing can be found locally. In one of the strangest exercises of process engineering, we painstakingly analyzed viral dispersion, room airflow patterns, and the deadly numbers such as infectious viral load. Combining proven viral neutralization methods and making it portable in a self-contained unit called the AirSAFE.

The motivation in making project AirSAFE was not intended to be a commercial venture but for safety. We launched the Airsafe series of air purifiers with the safety of our coworkers and our families in mind, so we did not go cheap with the critical specs such as internal UV treatment, HEPA filtration, and really powerful motors. We also added particle/odor sensors so the user can see how the air is before and after treatment, and filter replacement reminder alarms.

In these past few months, our sales and product fulfilment teams had to mad scramble with the long wait lists for our products and even personally deliver to front liners, hospitals and health care workers. Thousands delivered and we even had to do workday Sundays because our doctors needed them without a minute more of delay.

Right now, you can walk in and purchase the commercial strength AirSAFE MAX. We ran out of AS40 and AS95 within days of making available to the general public and expecting more stocks this Mid November. We simply could not make them fast enough!

Why AirSAFE?

Photo of Airsafe by Solaric

Why is this household appliance sought by doctors, hospital administrators, gyms, engineers, dentists, restaurants, hotels? It’s not a fancy bladeless fan, or a vaccum cleaner that costs as much as a small motorcycle – but a serious COVID19 mitigating tool that will help your family survive this pandemic.

How to Size?

US CDC Gold standard for Medical facilities is at least 10x to 15x times per hour fitlration through a HEPA filter. Our AS95 was sought after by dental clinics even though the treatment area is small <20sqm, because the AS95 has strong fans and can do 10x air changes per hour. For residential settings, the AS95 really shines for households with big rooms or pets. The AS40 is a best seller for bedrooms and personal offices.

The AS-MAX is our limited edition model – our biggest unit that can cleanse 800 cubic meters per hour of HEPA filtered air! We designed this for public spaces or really big homes as it can cover up to 98sqm with a 100W motor for rapid dispersion.

Our AirSAFE technology uses best-in-class suction fans to move mass volumes of contaminated air spaces through our HEPA filtration process and internal UV light treatment for nonstop disinfection. Check and compare our technical specs before buying.

HEPA 11 AND HEPA 13: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

HEPA filter inside an air purifier

What exactly is a HEPA filter and why is it important when purchasing air purifiers like AirSAFE?

What is HEPA?

Different hepa filters

HEPA or High Efficiency Particulate Air is common for air purifiers, vacuum cleaners, heating, ventilating and air-conditioning units and is an efficiency standard of air filter. HEPA filters are expected to trap very small particles that are invisible to the human eye and can cause harm to your health.

HEPA filters are effective in prevention of spread of airborne contaminants such as bacteria and virus. The AirSAFE units are equipped with an H11 grade filter which can be upgraded into H13 and a UV light to kill all the microbes that are trapped in the filters.

HEPA Grades

Close up of hepa filter

Currently, Solaric offers 2 HEPA grades for the AirSAFE units: H11 and H13. A HEPA grade can help you compare the efficiency among other HEPA filters. The general standard HEPA grade ranges from H10-H12 and can trap 99.995% of particles in 0.3microns diameter.

The H13 falls under the medical grade which are commonly used in medical and health facilities that are more exposed in dangerous toxins and have a greater particulate retention rate. These filters can trap 99.995% of particles in 0.1 microns. They have denser fiber and can trap the tiniest particles at a higher rate, efficiently removing harmful microbes in the air.

The following are the current prices for AirSAFE filters:

AS40 H11 filter: P1,900

AS40 H13 filter: P2,750

AS95 H11 filter: P3,500

AS95 H13 filter: P4,800

AS-MAX H13 filter: P6,900
