WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

The lights turn off, and the aircons and electric fans stop working. Yes, it’s a brownout. What happens to your solar energy system during a power outage?

Grid-Tie Systems

As what the name says, grid tie systems are interconnected to your utility – otherwise referred to as the grid. In short, grid tie solar power systems are solar systems that are tied to the grid. With this system, you use solar as the first priority power during daytime.

The grid tie system is the most popular and most highly recommended solar system for areas with stable grid power such as the Metro Manila. These grid tie systems do not have batteries or power storage. They do not work during nighttime and brownouts. However, they are relatively cheaper because they don’t come with batteries. Thus, return of investment is faster, usually between three to five years. To keep it simple, with a grid tie solar system, you make your money back within 5 years. For the next 20 years, you profit from your system. Definitely a win-win.

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

During a power outage, even if the sun is out, your grid tie system will automatically shut down as it is interconnected to the grid and must closely follow its regulations. This is a safety measure to prevent your solar system from exporting power, or to prevent the system from accidentally electrocuting the line men that may work on and fix the power lines. Thus, grid tie systems are strictly required to automatically shut down when the power is out.

Hybrid and Off-Grid Systems

Off-grid systems, on the other hand, is completely independent from the grid and works with whatever you sow from your solar panels. This type of system is recommended for areas with unstable grid supply or where power outages are very frequent. The power generated from your system is stored into batteries which makes it operational even during brownouts.

A hybrid system is a combination of a grid tie and an off-grid system. Hybrid setups allows users to have complete control and flexibility on the energy harvested by their solar panels. They can either opt to store power in the batteries or sell it back to the grid. This system works even during brownouts and is the best choice for clients who want energy security and independence 24/7.

Due to the limited lifespan of a battery, you will need to replace if after about five years. Batteries serve as the energy storage component of the system, and are also relatively high in terms of cost. Hence, the off-grid and hybrid solar setups cost more compared to grid tie systems, and have longer ROIs.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR WHEN IT RAINS?

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR WHEN IT RAINS?

It is officially the rainy season, and one of the common questions we typically encounter during this period is how does solar work during bad weather and how does it affect my system?

In a nutshell

Even during heavy rain, the rain itself doesn’t have any effect on your solar panels, but the solar power system will definitely harvest less, versus harvest on a bright sunny day. Lower harvest means low energy production, usually between 10-25%. Contrary to popular belief that your system does not produce power during rainy days, the reality is, in fact, that light can still pass and bounce through clouds and reflect on your solar panels to produce energy.

One other thing – Rain is actually perfect for the panels. Why? The rain serves as a natural ‘car wash’ for your solar panels. The rain helps wash off any dirt, dust and debris such as bird manure, that may have accumulated over time which can affect your daily energy production if left on the solar panels.

Panels101

Solar panels are designed and manufactured to be waterproof and moisture proof. They undergo various laboratory tests and are built to withstand different and severe weather conditions. This is why it is important to only purchase and install high quality equipment from trustworthy, reputable suppliers and Tier1 brands. Solar panels should last and perform for 25 years – or even more.

Solaric solar power systems are strictly designed and installed with premium quality solar equipment and materials. We make it our top priority to make sure that the installed rooftop solar system can sustain up to 250kph of winds, especially since we live in a tropical country like the Philippines where there are at least a minimum of 20 typhoons per year. Our solar installations come with a no non-sense warranty, guaranteeing true value for your money.

Yes, we go out of our way to make sure that turning on the sun is a win-win investment for you.

CAN SOLAR RUN MY AIRCON?

CAN SOLAR RUN MY AIRCON?

For some reason, for us Pinoys, there is always some sort of guilt associated with turning on the aircon – because it contradicts the mindset of “making tipid”. To this day, this question remains to be one of the most popular about solar: can solar run my aircon?

The answer is yes!

Solar can definitely handle and power your air-conditioning units. With a grid tie system, solar will serve as the first priority power that will supply the needed electricity of your household during daytime, which is perfect when the sun is shining at its peak and the temperature is hotter, and you simply want to enjoy a well-cooled fully air-conditioned room while working, attending online classes or simply binge watching your favorite Netflix shows.

How much will it cost me?

Depending on the horsepower of your aircon, a 1.8kWp grid tie system can cover running a 1.5hp aircon during the daytime. The all-in total cost for a Solaric 1.8kWp grid tie system is Php138,000. With that capacity of a solar power system, daytime lights and appliances such as refrigerator, electric fan, computer, and gadgets can run on solar. Of course, for every additional air-conditioning unit and higher total of horsepower, you will be needing a bigger solar energy system to cover all your daytime consumption.

For example, a household with a total of 4hp air-conditioning units will need a 5.4kWp which costs around Php 273,000.

Prices quoted in this article are for GI sheet rooftops and located within Metro Manila. Solaric grid tie systems are guaranteed to last for 25 years and more, making it a win-win investment in terms of savings and peace of mind.

With a lot of us staying at home for work and online classes, you will need a long-guaranteed solution to provide you the financial and energy stability you deserve. Don’t you want to chill and relax with the AC on full blast, yet be free from bill shock?

Score big this October!

Because we want to put a smile on your face even during the rainy season, we are bringing the 88K-all in as part of Solaric’s Great October sale! Power up 1.5hp aircon, together with the other common appliances during daytime with the 1.8kWp grid tie system. HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS DO YOU NEED TO GET THAT #ZEROBILL?

HOW MANY SOLAR PANELS DO YOU NEED TO GET THAT #ZEROBILL?

Solaric has already proven that the #ZeroBill is not a myth, and ever since, we’ve been continuously plagued by questions about how many solar panels are really needed to achieve that legendary Zero Bill.

Know your energy consumption

Know your energy consumption

Determining a household’s kilowatt hour usage is critical, and can be found in your electric bills. It is important to identify the common daytime appliances that you use, and during what hours of the day. All this data will help us determine what your average energy requirements are. We can then design and customize a system in accordance to your needs.

Check the size of your panels and your roof

Depending on the brand, type, and wattage, the sizes of your solar panels may vary. This may have an effect on your total system size especially if you have limited or shaded roof space. If you have limited space, consider getting solar panels with a higher wattage and efficiency, because less number of high wattage panels could still cover your daytime power needs. Zero Bill builds will take up a lot of roof space so it is important to maximize the space effectively and get the most efficient components for your solar PV system.

Multiply the recommended system

Once you have determined your average energy requirements, you need to multiply it by about 3 to 4 times. Zero bill with a grid tie system is only ideally possible with the combination of a massive solar system build plus the “net metering” program. This program allows you to export any excess energy to the utility and when you export so much power that greatly offsets your night time consumption, the credits pile up which can become extremely rewarding as it will later translate to a #ZeroBill!

A #ZeroBill build does not come cheap, but you may closely work with your solar provider to make design your solar energy system in accordance to your budget for now, then slowly work your way towards that dream “#ZeroBill build” in the future.

WHY SOLAR IS YOUR NEXT BEST INVESTMENT

WHY SOLAR IS YOUR NEXT BEST INVESTMENT

The Sun’s energy won’t run out until billions of years. With all that sunshine ahead of us, we might as well consider solar energy as infinite and make the most out of it. Ever since the human race have relied on the sun’s power, we continuously evolved its uses and among them is using solar energy to power our day-to-day lives. Here are some reasons why you should consider this infinite source of power to be your next best investment.

Get that #ZeroBill

Get that #ZeroBill

The Philippines has one of the highest electricity rates in Southeast Asia and definitely continues to increase for each passing year due to the country’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels and monopolized market system. Due to this, Filipinos have grown accustomed to “making tipid” when it comes to power consumption. We do not even want to turn on the ACs – even when it is terribly hot outside. We are afraid of the anxiety and and the nightmares that our monthly electric bill will give us. We totally dread bill shock.

But with solar, you can own your personal power plant right there on your roof. With this, you can now generate your own power whenever the sun is out, and then use that power. With a Solaric grid tie system, your PV system and utility grid are interconnected to each other. It uses solar energy as the first priority power to cover your daytime appliances. The end result? A big slash on your electric bills!

The excess power that your solar energy system generates can also be converted to credits and offset your night time and weekend energy usage through the “Net Metering” program. What happens when you fill your entire roof with solar panels and export so much power? The result is goodbye electric bill and hello #ZeroBill!

Low Maintenance and hassle-free

Unlike coal plants and other sources of renewable energy, going solar does not require much space and aftercare. You can install solar on the roof of your house and it does not require much cleaning, except once or twice a year with water and soap. It is also cleaned by nature whenever it rains.

Environment-friendly and pollution-free

Unlike the old and traditional source of energy, a.k.a. fossil fuels, your solar energy system does not produce any harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. A typical Solaric system eliminates more than four tons of CO2 per year which is equivalent to planting 50 trees each year. Not only do you get to ease the financial burden caused by the yearly increase in electricity rates, you will also be able to help the environment in the long run! Yes, when you go solar, you benefit from the savings and you contribute to protecting the environment!

EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

To get the most out of your solar energy system, it is best to take note of some of the factors that limit its maximum potential. Some factors can be controlled and avoided right at the project planning stage or beginning of PV installation. Some, however, are completely inevitable. Planning ahead and raising some of these concerns to your solar provider will help you look for considerable solutions that may save you from future headaches and aid you in the long run.

Shading

Shading

Shading in solar panels can be cause huge energy dropouts. This can properly be avoided if we make sure that the solar panels are free from any roof obstructions or shading. If the cause of shading is unavoidable such as nearby buildings, engineers may relocate your solar panels or ask you to remove the object that causes shading such as branches or trees.

Hot temperatures

Being near the equator means that we are blessed by abundant solar energy but at the same time, we experience very hot weather especially during the peak summer months. Hot temperatures are not good for your solar energy system as they can cause heat loss. Remember that the solar panels harvest sunlight and not heat. All solar panels can suffer a temporary efficiency drop on higher temperatures but monocrystalline solar panels are more efficient and less affected by the heat compared to polycrystalline.

Cloudy and rainy weather

Cloudy and rainy weather

Not every day is a sunny day and although the Philippines does not experience snow, rainy days and cloudy weather can greatly affect your system’s harvest on the entire duration. This is another factor where monocrystalline solar panels become a big advantage as it can still perform better compared to its counterpart even in low-light situations. Even if the sky is cloudy, some light still bounces and gets reflected on your solar panels.

System degradation

As time passes, your solar energy system will gradually decrease in its performance. A typical Solaric grid tie system has a 25-year power output guarantee and by that time, the system has fully paid off itself. Observing by yourself, coordinating well with your solar provider and proper care and maintenance to make sure that your system is well maintained and in top shape, will surely prolong your solar energy system’s lifespan.

GIVE YOUR ROOF A MAKEOVER THIS 2021: WITH SOLAR!

The Philippines sits on a location wherein the sun’s energy is abundant and omnipresent the whole year. If you have the right space right on top of your roof, why not make the best out of it by going renewable and installing solar panels?

As the knowledge of solar energy becomes more known and popular, we have seen a dramatic increase of people who want to invest in a solar PV system and enjoy the immense benefits of solar power.

Solar’s unlimited potential

One of the advantages of solar energy compared to fossil fuel, coal plants, and other sources of renewable energy is that it does not require you to build additional extra space. Your roof strategically provides the best location to take advantage of the sun’s energy. Depending on how big the system is, solar installation can be completed in as fast as one day. Just by utilizing the unobstructed space in your roof, you can have your own personal power plant and reap its benefits in the long run. The bonus? Solar is guaranteed to give you monthly savings on your electric bill. Yes, it’s an investment with an ROI of just about 5 years.

There are various factors to consider before installing solar panels on your roof such as the roof type, angle, structure, and orientation. It is also equally important to determine your daytime power consumption. Working closely with a certified and trusted solar provider will save you a lot of trouble in planning, designing, and the entire installation and energization process.
