During the past three weeks, some of us have lost track of what day it is. A weekend is now indistinguishable from a weekday. To those with pets, they are wondering why we aren’t being given their usual walks outside. We are now discovering what is really important. Time with family. Playing with the children. Resting, exercising, praying. Listening to each other’s stories. Healing.
Essential Superstars of COVID-19
Then there are those who have always been there but under-sung “essential” superstars such as the grocery boys, water delivery man, pharmacists, and the brave frontliners keeping our hopes alive by fiercely fighting this invisible monster.
Yes – we cringe as we see the growing COVID statistics of that insidious and seemingly unstoppable virus. We should not forget that we still have plenty to count our blessings for. True, we have begun to see the ugly rear its head, but by a greater margin we are also witnessing the best and that makes us proud to be called a #Filipino.
So, we sacrificed our jobs, put life as we knew it on HOLD. Without a doubt, we are besting the other well more prosperous countries like Italy and the United States in terms of contagion spread or in terms of the deadliest of all numbers, body count.
We are seeing corporate tycoons retooling their beer and gin factories to produce rubbing alcohol. Neighbors are looking out for their less fortunate neighbors. Police, LGUs, and government officials are working the extra mile to keep peace and order. Entrepreneurs who are still paying wages and distributing rice even though faced with the uncertainty of the future. Yes, even in the face of setback and adversity, there exists meaning and kindness.
Mother Nature Says Respect Our Planet
Now the earth is beginning to heal. The COVID-19 pandemic is also Mother Nature’s way of telling us to RESPECT our planet. Yes, we really trashed our world from the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the wildlife we abused. Besides the NOW obvious ramifications of eating an undercooked bat, we are now seeing much cleaner and bluer skies. It is because now we are burning 90% less fuel, burning way less coal and oil to light up our grids.
After this lockdown ends, majority of us will probably go back to our old ways driven by consumerism – but the learned few will reflect and figure out how to live better, make wiser choices, create new dreams, take care of ourselves and our planet more, and become a more involved citizen of the world. While at home, plan for the future to take your mind off of things. Remember that this too shall pass.
Post-COVID Suggestions
In the meantime here are some daydream post-COVID suggestions. Feel free to make your own as you continue to harvest hope for our future.
