Besides putting up solar in the right orientation to avoid shading and energy losses, there are still numerous things you can look into to fully maximize your solar system investment.
Plan and size up your loads
Doing the power-intensive chores during the sun’s peak at around 9 am to 3 pm will help match your heavy daytime loads with the solar energy you are getting. It is around these times that your house is primarily being powered by solar energy on a typical sunny day. One of our clients named Tony even shared a running joke around their house ever since getting a solar system, that whether they cook a pizza or use the dryer, they have to use it before the sun goes down.
Net Metering
How can you displace your night time loads? Does it mean that solar is only practical during daytime? Not really, since it is possible to offset your night time usage through the Net Metering program. How does it work? During the daytime when the sun is out, your energy consumption is powered by the sun through your solar. With the excess or surplus power harvested by your solar, you earn “credits” from the utility (Meralco). These credits will be used to offset your night time consumption. This is seen on the back of the electric bill under Net Metering.
Sometimes, when the exported power is A LOT, then the result is a zero bill. You have to note that it will take more net metering credits to match and wipe out night time consumption on a kWh basis as it has less value compared to the retail energy rates.
How can this be done? Install a system that is huge, massive, gigantic.
POP or Peak off Peak with Net Metering
Meralco’s POP program is an alternative energy pricing scheme wherein customers can avail lower electricity costs during the off-peak hours. Combining this with Net Metering for evening consumption with Solar catering the daytime peak rates is a good way to accelerate your return of investment and ultimately slash your monthly electric bills when planned correctly.
Size up your system
If you haven’t completely maximized yet the capacity of your roof/space to have solar panels, you may try to save up and invest later to add more just like plug and play. This is what is also in Doug Kramer’s mind when he is building his dream house, that he already has everything ready and “naka-abang na ang lahat”, so that in time when he has another budged to expand his solar system, he’ll just need to add more panels in the future.
Invest in a reputable solar company
Find a solar company who knows what they are talking about and will help you streamline the entire process of getting a solar system from the initial recommendation and site survey down to installation, energization, turnover, and process of Net metering. Net Metering is necessary to get the full potential of a Solar installation but the approval process can be tedious and there is a strict adherence to electrical and distribution codes between the LGU, ERC and the utility provider for a safe and speedy approval which is why with a big investment such as solar, it is important to look and choose a good solar provider that knows how to do its job well and ensure you the best possible results in the long run.
