ZERO BILL FEATURE: GERRY & HIS 12.4kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

ZERO BILL FEATURE: GERRY & HIS 12.4kWp GRID TIE SYSTEM

Solaric can absolutely deliver the Zero Bill promise. Just ask Gerry Vaño, another satisfied Solaric client.

In an exclusive, gated, private neighborhood of a quiet subdivision in the South, stands the majestic, beautiful, 500 square meter, 3-bedroom contemporary Filipino-style solar home of Gerry – one of our very first Zero Bill clients. Since 2018, he’s been enjoying the happiness and rewards of a #ZeroBill. With a 12.4 kWp Grid Tie System installed on his roofdeck, his monthly bill went from 11k to ZERO.

In 2017, Gerry decided to install solar panels. He approached Solaric and they conducted a comprehensive site survey. His household appliances included a washing machine, dryer, two refrigerators, two water pumps, three television sets, 11 air conditioners, and a home theater. His electric bill amounted to an average of 10 to 11 thousand pesos each month. Solaric offered an array of solar options that would give him optimum power at the lowest cost. Gerry selected efficiency and long-term financial feasibility by having 40 rooftop solar panels installed (12.4kWp).

A couple months after installing solar, Gerry received his first Zero Bill (total amount due was Php0.00 in his monthly electric bill). “The moment the Net Metering kicked in, I got a Zero Bill. Then, all succeeding months were all zero bills!” exclaimed Gerry, as he showed us his stack of zero bills accumulated the past year.

When asked to discuss the profitability of his solar power system, Gerry paused for a moment’s reflection. “Yes, I’m able to save 10 to 11 thousand a month. But we don’t talk about ROI (return on investment) in these cases. Anong ROI in buying an expensive car? Pogi points!” Gerry laughed in amusement. “It’s really about utilizing whatever is renewable, and solar was the only thing that was feasible. I’ve been planning on installing solar even before the house was constructed.”

The Zero Bill Phenomenon

The Zero Bill Phenomenon

Gerry brings the zero bill phenomenon towards the limelight. “What does the zero bill mean to me? Sure, one part of it is about savings – I have a monthly electric bill that says zero. It makes everyone in the house scream with happiness. On the other hand, my investment pay-off is renewable energy. Sustainability. I care about the environment and the planet. This is my contribution to saving our future. That is what makes solar worth it!”

How To Choose The Right Size For Your Solar System

How To Choose The Right Size For Your Solar System

The best investment you can make this year: rooftop solar. Investing in solar is the smart solution for homeowners and business owners. Solar is easy to maintain and operate, plus it comes with long-term performance (25 to 30 years) and lowers your carbon footprint.

You would want to know how to correctly size your solar power system so you can achieve your goals and make the most of your grid tie solar system.

STEP 1: DETERMINE HOW MUCH SAVINGS YOU WANT FROM YOUR SOLAR

STEP 1: DETERMINE HOW MUCH SAVINGS YOU WANT FROM YOUR SOLAR

This is an important first step. You should define your financial goals (how much savings you want). Are you looking at 30% savings? 50% savings? 75% savings? Or are you looking at getting that coveted Zero Bill? This is also in line with several other factors, such as budget, rooftop space, location, power consumption patterns, etc. The goal is to size your PV array to achieve your end goal.

STEP 2: ANALYZE YOUR POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

STEP 2: ANALYZE YOUR POWER CONSUMPTION PATTERNS

Different households or facilities use power differently. There are some households with children in the home all throughout the day, using power in a homeschooling setup. Other households have no one in the house during the daytime, and most power consumption is at night time. When the Solaric engineer conducts a site survey or site assessment, all these factors are considered, along with other elements such as rooftop space, shading, etc., prior to preparing the design of your solar system. There are various constraints on every project and such restrictions affect design and system size: budget, space, and energy offset. We want to design and build a system for you that offsets a certain percentage of your nighttime power consumption.

STEP 3: CALCULATE YOUR kWh USAGE

STEP 3: CALCULATE YOUR kWh USAGE

Your usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh) can be obtained from your electric bill. It is ideal to provide copies of several months of bills to our engineer, so that they can be analyzed. Energy spikes and consumption are usually highest in the summer, with heavy use of aircons and appliances during those months. The most ideal way to determine your average monthly kWh usage is to add up your kWh consumption for 12 months, then divide the figure by 12 to get your average monthly consumption. Divide by 30 to determine your daily kWh usage. Another way to determine your usage is to use your appliances and plug them in a power consumption table. Alternatively, our engineers can also check your basetime loads during their site assessment.

STEP 4: CALCULATE THE SIZE OF YOUR SYSTEM

Once you have determined your daily kWh power requirement, divide it by the Peak Sun Hours of your location to get the kW output. From there, we can identify how many solar panels you will need for your system, that is in line with your end goal of going solar.

STEP 5: CONSIDER OTHER FACTORS

Lastly, it is also crucial to fine tune the system design. Other factors should be taken into account, such as the mounting system that will be needed for your rooftop, the direction the panels will face, surrounding trees or elements that may cause shading, equipment type, conduit run, net metering requirements – all these play a vital role in finalizing system design.

STORMY, RAINY, AND CLOUDY: HOW DOES YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM WORK DURING DAYS LIKE THESE?

Although the sun’s energy is abundant throughout the year, the Philippines resides in the typhoon belt where a minimum of 20 typhoons visit our zone every year. That being said, is it even worth it and safe to install solar?

Similar to how your skin tans when it’s overcast outside, your solar panels will still generate electricity during cloudy or rainy days. Solar energy systems produce electricity through light. Although they are more effective when directly hit by sunlight, they are still capable of converting indirect sunlight to energy that your household or business can use – except that it’s less harvest compared to a clear, bright, sunny day. The rain has its advantage though, since it serves as a ‘free car wash’ for your solar panels, effectively washing and removing grime and dirt that may have accumulated overtime.

No need to worry if the solar energy produced is not enough on certain days since a grid tie system is interconnected to the utility grid. The grid will automatically supply the lack of power supply seamlessly. You can also integrate a battery or energy storage to your solar system if you choose to have energy security and emergency source of power when brownouts hit.

How about during storms?

Your Solaric system is built tough to withstand up to 220kph of winds. Even during a storm, as long as indirect sunlight strikes your panels, they can still continue to harvest energy for you as long as your grid is not affected. Grid tie systems automatically shut down during a power outage to protect the linemen that may be working to restore your grid. If you have an energy storage system, it is best to ensure they are fully charged to enjoy their benefits even during a brownout.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

The lights turn off, and the aircons and electric fans stop working. Yes, it’s a brownout. What happens to your solar energy system during a power outage?

Grid-Tie Systems

As what the name says, grid tie systems are interconnected to your utility – otherwise referred to as the grid. In short, grid tie solar power systems are solar systems that are tied to the grid. With this system, you use solar as the first priority power during daytime.

The grid tie system is the most popular and most highly recommended solar system for areas with stable grid power such as the Metro Manila. These grid tie systems do not have batteries or power storage. They do not work during nighttime and brownouts. However, they are relatively cheaper because they don’t come with batteries. Thus, return of investment is faster, usually between three to five years. To keep it simple, with a grid tie solar system, you make your money back within 5 years. For the next 20 years, you profit from your system. Definitely a win-win.

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

During a power outage, even if the sun is out, your grid tie system will automatically shut down as it is interconnected to the grid and must closely follow its regulations. This is a safety measure to prevent your solar system from exporting power, or to prevent the system from accidentally electrocuting the line men that may work on and fix the power lines. Thus, grid tie systems are strictly required to automatically shut down when the power is out.

Hybrid and Off-Grid Systems

Off-grid systems, on the other hand, is completely independent from the grid and works with whatever you sow from your solar panels. This type of system is recommended for areas with unstable grid supply or where power outages are very frequent. The power generated from your system is stored into batteries which makes it operational even during brownouts.

A hybrid system is a combination of a grid tie and an off-grid system. Hybrid setups allows users to have complete control and flexibility on the energy harvested by their solar panels. They can either opt to store power in the batteries or sell it back to the grid. This system works even during brownouts and is the best choice for clients who want energy security and independence 24/7.

Due to the limited lifespan of a battery, you will need to replace if after about five years. Batteries serve as the energy storage component of the system, and are also relatively high in terms of cost. Hence, the off-grid and hybrid solar setups cost more compared to grid tie systems, and have longer ROIs.

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR WHEN IT RAINS?

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR WHEN IT RAINS?

It is officially the rainy season, and one of the common questions we typically encounter during this period is how does solar work during bad weather and how does it affect my system?

In a nutshell

Even during heavy rain, the rain itself doesn’t have any effect on your solar panels, but the solar power system will definitely harvest less, versus harvest on a bright sunny day. Lower harvest means low energy production, usually between 10-25%. Contrary to popular belief that your system does not produce power during rainy days, the reality is, in fact, that light can still pass and bounce through clouds and reflect on your solar panels to produce energy.

One other thing – Rain is actually perfect for the panels. Why? The rain serves as a natural ‘car wash’ for your solar panels. The rain helps wash off any dirt, dust and debris such as bird manure, that may have accumulated over time which can affect your daily energy production if left on the solar panels.

Panels101

Solar panels are designed and manufactured to be waterproof and moisture proof. They undergo various laboratory tests and are built to withstand different and severe weather conditions. This is why it is important to only purchase and install high quality equipment from trustworthy, reputable suppliers and Tier1 brands. Solar panels should last and perform for 25 years – or even more.

Solaric solar power systems are strictly designed and installed with premium quality solar equipment and materials. We make it our top priority to make sure that the installed rooftop solar system can sustain up to 250kph of winds, especially since we live in a tropical country like the Philippines where there are at least a minimum of 20 typhoons per year. Our solar installations come with a no non-sense warranty, guaranteeing true value for your money.

Yes, we go out of our way to make sure that turning on the sun is a win-win investment for you.

TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS: WHICH ONE IS FOR YOU?

TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS: WHICH ONE IS FOR YOU?

With a lot of solar panels in the market, how will you know which one is for you?

The improvement in solar technology has caused a variety and wide range of solar cell technologies to spawn in the market. In the Philippines, there are 2 major types of solar panels commonly offered by solar providers: the polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels. How do they differ from each other?

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

As derived from the word poly, the polycrystalline solar panels are made up of multiple pieces of silicon that are mixed together to form a solar cell. Because of the differences in the surface due to the process on how it is made, polycrystalline solar panels give off a blue color. Since they are made up of multiple silicon crystals, the space for electrons to move around become less, making this kind of panels less efficient in heat and low-light conditions compared to its counterpart.

On a bright side, since they produce less waster material and therefore definitely easier and simpler to produce, the polycrystalline solar panels cost less and is a popular choice for solar clients who are conscious on their budget.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline solar panels are derived from a single silicon crystalline which gives off its uniform and black hue appearance. These panels are made up of pure cells which makes them highly efficient even in higher temperatures or low-light conditions.

The production of monocrystalline solar panels is more time consuming and complex. It produces more waste material since every silicon are cut into squares and trimmed off to create the famous cell shape we know about. Hence, it is more expensive compared to the polycrystalline solar panels

So what should you choose?

Both polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels have its own set of pros and cons. Are you leaning more in aesthetics of black and blue or panel efficiency? Do you want more energy and space efficient solar panels or stick to your current budget and financial options?

While both panels differ in a lot of aspects and may cater to more to one factor than the other, polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels will still perform their intended purpose of harvesting the sun’s energy for you and are guaranteed to have a long lifespan and 25-year power output production. Definitely, a win-win return of investment in 5 years for a typical Solaric grid tie system.

BUILDING A SOLAR-READY HOME

A home with solar grids

Designing a solar ready home is a good step to minimize construction and installation costs especially if you are exploring the possibility of future upgrades. Integrating your home design to a future solar build will maximize the solar system’s potential and make the installation easier and hassle free.

Allot good roof space, tilt and orientation

Roof space with solar panels

To make the most of your solar, providing optimal placement and good roof space for your solar panels will result in higher efficiency of the system. It is best to orient the solar panels towards what is referred to as the ‘solar window’, for the system to receive the maximum amount of solar energy at any time. In Metro Manila, the ideal set up is to face the panels towards the “True South”, with tilt of between 10 to 20 degrees.

Be careful of the possibility of shading

Make sure that your roof is free from any obstructions that may later on cause shading on the panels that will be installed (such as trees, antennas, or surrounding buildings). Carefully plan where to put the vents, skylight, or heater, and place them where they cannot affect the solar panels.

Does that mean I have to sacrifice on design?

Organized solar grids

Not really. In fact, the whole concept of a solar-ready home is to design the establishment to be more well-built and solar equipped when a homeowner finally decides to install one. The homeowner can approach their architects and contractors to better incorporate your home design with solar. This can be a huge breather especially since constructing a home and installing solar can be an expensive combination. Preparing your home to be solar ready will make your future solar installation easier – like plug and play.

SHOULD YOU GO SOLAR?

A house with solar panels

Factors to consider when you’re thinking of going solar

Have you received your electricity bill recently? If yes, were you surprised at the skyrocketing increase? With the shock brought by the recent electric bills, a lot of people are now interested in how they can lower the amount they spend on paying for their electricity by going solar. If you’re thinking of installing solar panels now on your roof and have some hesitations, here are some things to consider that might help you.

Do you have space for solar?

A house with solar panels on its roof

A standard panel measures about 1m x 1.6m and weighs around 18kg. Considering this, you may need ample roof space for your solar panels. Your roof structure should also be able to accommodate the weight of your panels and mounting. Remember that you have to put your solar panels where it can receive the most sunlight to maximize your solar system’s potential. You might also need to trim nearby trees or keep in mind the shading caused by different roof obstructions. You may contact Solaric and schedule a site survey to determine if your house and roof are feasible for solar.

How much is your bill and what are the daytime appliances that you use?

An electricity bill pre-solar

From your electric bill down to the common appliances that you use during the daytime, Solaric can make an initial recommendation on the size and cost of your solar system as well as the initial savings or return of investment you can have. Are you a light load user or do you use multiple air-conditioning units during the daytime? Now that many people are from a work-from-home arrangement, there is an increase in the daytime consumption of households throughout the metro. These factors will highly affect the recommended size or capacity of your system and the number of panels to be installed.

Will you still require power from the utility?

Post-solar electricity bill

With a grid tie system, your first priority power during the daytime will always be solar – whenever the sun is out. Since there is no sun or solar during night time, those are the times that your power will be coming from the utility grid. There is no need to worry because a grid tie solar system will allow you to export surplus or excess power through the Net Metering program. The utility will then “purchase” that exported power from you by crediting you on your next bill. In essence, this can offset your nighttime energy usage.

Do you need batteries?

Close up of a house roof with solar panels

Batteries are usually recommended for areas where there is intermitted or unstable electricity from the grid – otherwise referred to as power-starved areas. These are the instances when batteries make economical sense because energy storage allows the system to supply power even at night, whenever there is no actual sun or grid power available. For areas such as Metro Manila, grid tie systems work best and are the most recommended, due to the fact that there is a relatively stable power supply. Hence, batteries are not really necessary in the metro, unless you require power storage for emergencies and for backup.

Will it be worth your investment?

Top view of a house with solar

Solar is a long-term investment with a typical ROI of 3 to 5 years depending on the size and kind of system installed. Solar can generate monthly savings and clear you from any guilt trips in turning on the aircon, plus the investment will gradually pay off in the years to come. It requires little maintenance and with the right care, it can last up to 25 years or more! Yes, the typical solar power system comes with a 25-year output guarantee. In the first five years, you get your money back and achieve ROI. In the next 20 years, you profit from your investment. That’s why it’s a win-win: you profit PLUS you protect the environment!

THE IMPACT OF NET METERING ON YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

A home with solar panels

A lot of people who just started reading up on solar thinks that once their panels are up and your system is energized, that’s already the finish line. What if we tell you that you can do much more about that energy you are harvesting?

Net Metering

Net Metering

In a solar-powered home, the first priority of your solar system is to power up your appliances during the daytime, therefore decreasing the power that you get from your utility company which equals lower bill costs. During instances when your grid tie system generates more power than what you have consumed, the “Net Metering” program allows you to export or sell the excess energy to the utility company in exchange for credits. The accumulated credits can then be used to offset the power you consume during the night time. This results in further reductions in your electric bill.

Doesn’t my solar cover my entire consumption?

Your solar system does not work during nighttime and in some cases wherein solar energy is not available or your system produces less than your consumption, your utility grid will automatically supply your power for your home. This is done automatically without flipping any switches because your solar is seamlessly integrated into your main panel box. Solar power can only solely offset daytime usage which is why applying net metering can cause a further big impact on your savings. In other words, solar can only cover your daytime consumption. You still have to pay for your night time consumption. BUT, if you have net metering, then you can export your excess power during the day, earn credits for it, and these credits will reflect in your monthly electric bill. Literally. The back part of your bill will now have a section on net metering, and it will show you how much excess power you exported and the equivalent amount for it. Then this amount is deducted from your total bill.

Maximizing your system

Zero electricity bill

Net metering allows your system to work and optimize its full potential. In fact, net metering makes the zero bill possible since any excess energy will automatically be turned into credits. So if you are more of a night time consumer, a person who loves to turn on the air-conditioning unit all the time, or someone who wants to take advantage of their system on their empty homes while they are at work during the daytime, then it is best to apply for net metering. Worry not for the Solaric team is here to help you with that!

HOW DOES YOUR SOLARIC GRID TIE SYSTEM WORK?

A home with rooftop solar in the Philippines

A quick run-down on the basics while you are on lockdown

Your solar system is made up of different components. How do they work and come together to bring you your savings?

It starts with the solar panels

The magic starts when photons coming from the sun hits your solar panels. The more panels installed on your roof, the more energy you can harvest which is directly related savings. These solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity that your home can use.

Grid Tie Inverter

Grid Tie Inverter

The inverter is like the brain or engine of your solar system. The inverter converts the direct current (DC) produced from your solar panels to alternating current (AC) which is required for household use. Yes, that is correct: DC to AC. The power from your inverter to your home’s main panel box is integrated seamlessly and there is no need for manual switching. Your grid tie inverter can provide you real-time information about your solar systems such as the current amount of energy being harvested at any point in time, or even the total amount generated since it was energized, the carbon footprint equivalent in some inverters, how the panels are performing, etc. That is why is it important for your inverter to have WiFi access. Most inverters can provide you detailed reports and statistics about your system. This can be monitored through a website or an app that you can download for free on your mobile devices. That way, at any given moment in time, from anywhere in the world, you can monitor your solar harvest!

Electric Meter

So, you consume the power that comes from your solar system, but do you ever wonder what happens to the excess electricity that your system generates?

When your grid tie system generates more power than what your home consumes, the excess or surplus power is exported or sold to the utility company via the Net Metering program. That is why it is important to register for Net Metering if you will be installing a system for your home or a system that is below 100-kilowatt peak (kWp). With net metering, your exported power is paid to you in terms of “credits”. The credits earned can be used to cover your nighttime and weekend usage.

And then the Zero Bill

And then the Zero Bill

The combination of an ample-sized solar panel system, net metering, wise usage of power at home – all these will result in fast ROI. Sometimes, it can result in the legendary Zero Bill.
