WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE THE COST OF SOLAR?

The cost of going solar

The cost of going solar

There are thousands of debates and as many misconceptions about solar and its costs. Since it is a relatively new power source in the Philippines, then solar energy education must be ongoing, so that the general population is given the privilege to understand solar power in its essence. The price of solar can vary, depending on numerous factors that go into installing a residential solar panel system or residential solar system. Every home is unique: own style, roof space, needs, power consumption, utility bill, household members, budget, and more. There is no answer that applies to everyone. There is no “one size fits all”.

Factors that influence

Factors that influence

It is important to tackle the factors and variables that contribute to the cost of a solar panel system.

Power consumption and electrical demand

One of the most essential factors that the homeowner has control over is the amount of electricity or power that is used each month. Every house has electrical appliances, such as air conditioning units, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, fans, electronics, home entertainment systems, computers, gadgets, kitchen appliances, etc. Again, everything varies from home to home. Homeowners can examine their monthly electric bills over the course of a year to understand their electrical demand and power consumption. In doing this, they can then calculate their average monthly usage in kilowatt-hours (kWh. This is one factor that can determine the solar capacity needed by the home, in order to offset their home’s electricity usage. Most homeowners want to go solar because they want to reduce their bill. However, others want to eliminate their bill – they want none other than the #ZeroBill. In any case, a solar panel system can typically reduce utility expenses from 35% to 75%.

Budget

Another determining factor to acquire solar energy is budget. The homeowner needs to purchase a solar system large enough to offset electric expenses used by the home each month. There are other things that can be done to make a home energy-efficient. Homeowners can reduce electrical demands too by using energy-conservative appliances and supplies (such as inverter aircon and LED bulbs).

Roof stuff

One critical consideration is roof space. The amount of space available on the roof determines the number of solar panels that the home can accommodate. The type of roof is also another factor: clay tile, GI sheet, roof deck, etc. A roof that is not oriented to the west or south or a roof that has too shallow or too steep of an angle or pitch will not be as efficient as a rooftop solar installation with optimal orientation and pitch.

Choice of solar panel brand

Then the type and brand of solar panels are also factors. Monocrystalline, polycrystalline or thin-film? Blue or black? Tier one panels? What brand? How many watts per panel? It is also wise to calculate cost per watt for the entire solar system, and to factor in efficiency, performance, and warranty.

“We have clients from all over the archipelago, with different energy goals and energy requirements. We first have to look at these things and understand them. Then we design the solar system in accordance with what is best suitable for that client,” emphasized Solaric President Mike De Guzman. “What does the homeowner want? Does he want to cut his bill in half? Or, does he want to eliminate his bill? He has to decide what his goal is.”
