The science of colors
We commonly see blue or black solar panels in the market. Some solar panels are blue because of the type of raw silicon used in producing the panels. Blue solar panels are made up of polycrystalline silicon that produces silicon crystals when molded that in turn, gives off the blue color. Meanwhile, black panels are made up of monocrystalline cells that has a high level of purity. The way the light interacts with the monocrystalline silicon layer makes the panels look black.
The difference in colors, materials, and process on how they were manufactured play significant roles on their efficiency and costs. The polycrystalline panels or blue panels, although widely used because of its cheaper price, is less efficient compared to monocrystalline ones.
The down side of colored panels
Because monocrystalline panel reflects black color due to the purity of silicon used, the black material absorbs more light making it the best option if you are looking for higher panel efficiency. In today’s technology, if we add colors to the solar panels to make it more aesthetically pleasing, the panels tend to become less efficient and harvest less energy due to the dyes and colored coating on the glass. The colors influence how light is absorbed, reflected, or transmitted to the cell.
Some people might not find the traditional solar panels appealing at all and might be hesitant to install solar panels because of it, but solar technology is improving and scientists are currently looking into nanotechnology to make solar cells more beautiful and incorporate it in building design – without sacrificing panel efficiency.
