How does solar function at night?
During night time, your solar panels do not produce energy since it needs sunlight to generate electricity in the first place. While this may be a disadvantage, it does not necessarily mean you cannot “use” your solar power at night. Your solar energy system still provides you solutions – even when the sun is out.
Grid Tie Solar
Through the “net metering” program, all the excess power generated by your PV system is exported to the utility grid to offset your night time and weekend energy usage. There is no need to manually flip switches for this to happen since grid tie system is seamlessly interconnected to your gird, so when there is no enough energy coming from your panels, it automatically switches the source of your power to the grid. In essence, your solar is technically asleep at night, but it’s still “working” for you because the power that was generated during the daytime is offsetting the power you’re using at night time.
Off-Grid or Hybrid Solar
Not only that – if you have an off-grid or hybrid solar setup, your solar panels can charge your energy storage or batteries during the daytime. The stored energy in your batteries will then supply and power your home throughout the night. These kind of solar setups provide energy independence from the grid and solution for areas with very unstable supply of power. At the same time, you can also coordinate with your solar provider on how to configure your system for both net metering and battery storage, so that your solar can work seamlessly.
This only proves that even if it’s night time and the sun is out, your solar energy system continues to work and provide the benefits you completely deserve!
