WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

WHAT HAPPENS TO MY SOLAR SYSTEM DURING A BROWNOUT?

The lights turn off, and the aircons and electric fans stop working. Yes, it’s a brownout. What happens to your solar energy system during a power outage?

Grid-Tie Systems

As what the name says, grid tie systems are interconnected to your utility – otherwise referred to as the grid. In short, grid tie solar power systems are solar systems that are tied to the grid. With this system, you use solar as the first priority power during daytime.

The grid tie system is the most popular and most highly recommended solar system for areas with stable grid power such as the Metro Manila. These grid tie systems do not have batteries or power storage. They do not work during nighttime and brownouts. However, they are relatively cheaper because they don’t come with batteries. Thus, return of investment is faster, usually between three to five years. To keep it simple, with a grid tie solar system, you make your money back within 5 years. For the next 20 years, you profit from your system. Definitely a win-win.

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

Now, what happens to a grid tie system during a brownout?

During a power outage, even if the sun is out, your grid tie system will automatically shut down as it is interconnected to the grid and must closely follow its regulations. This is a safety measure to prevent your solar system from exporting power, or to prevent the system from accidentally electrocuting the line men that may work on and fix the power lines. Thus, grid tie systems are strictly required to automatically shut down when the power is out.

Hybrid and Off-Grid Systems

Off-grid systems, on the other hand, is completely independent from the grid and works with whatever you sow from your solar panels. This type of system is recommended for areas with unstable grid supply or where power outages are very frequent. The power generated from your system is stored into batteries which makes it operational even during brownouts.

A hybrid system is a combination of a grid tie and an off-grid system. Hybrid setups allows users to have complete control and flexibility on the energy harvested by their solar panels. They can either opt to store power in the batteries or sell it back to the grid. This system works even during brownouts and is the best choice for clients who want energy security and independence 24/7.

Due to the limited lifespan of a battery, you will need to replace if after about five years. Batteries serve as the energy storage component of the system, and are also relatively high in terms of cost. Hence, the off-grid and hybrid solar setups cost more compared to grid tie systems, and have longer ROIs.

EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT AFFECT THE PERFORMANCE OF YOUR SOLAR SYSTEM

To get the most out of your solar energy system, it is best to take note of some of the factors that limit its maximum potential. Some factors can be controlled and avoided right at the project planning stage or beginning of PV installation. Some, however, are completely inevitable. Planning ahead and raising some of these concerns to your solar provider will help you look for considerable solutions that may save you from future headaches and aid you in the long run.

Shading

Shading

Shading in solar panels can be cause huge energy dropouts. This can properly be avoided if we make sure that the solar panels are free from any roof obstructions or shading. If the cause of shading is unavoidable such as nearby buildings, engineers may relocate your solar panels or ask you to remove the object that causes shading such as branches or trees.

Hot temperatures

Being near the equator means that we are blessed by abundant solar energy but at the same time, we experience very hot weather especially during the peak summer months. Hot temperatures are not good for your solar energy system as they can cause heat loss. Remember that the solar panels harvest sunlight and not heat. All solar panels can suffer a temporary efficiency drop on higher temperatures but monocrystalline solar panels are more efficient and less affected by the heat compared to polycrystalline.

Cloudy and rainy weather

Cloudy and rainy weather

Not every day is a sunny day and although the Philippines does not experience snow, rainy days and cloudy weather can greatly affect your system’s harvest on the entire duration. This is another factor where monocrystalline solar panels become a big advantage as it can still perform better compared to its counterpart even in low-light situations. Even if the sky is cloudy, some light still bounces and gets reflected on your solar panels.

System degradation

As time passes, your solar energy system will gradually decrease in its performance. A typical Solaric grid tie system has a 25-year power output guarantee and by that time, the system has fully paid off itself. Observing by yourself, coordinating well with your solar provider and proper care and maintenance to make sure that your system is well maintained and in top shape, will surely prolong your solar energy system’s lifespan.

TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS: WHICH ONE IS FOR YOU?

TYPES OF SOLAR PANELS: WHICH ONE IS FOR YOU?

With a lot of solar panels in the market, how will you know which one is for you?

The improvement in solar technology has caused a variety and wide range of solar cell technologies to spawn in the market. In the Philippines, there are 2 major types of solar panels commonly offered by solar providers: the polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels. How do they differ from each other?

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

As derived from the word poly, the polycrystalline solar panels are made up of multiple pieces of silicon that are mixed together to form a solar cell. Because of the differences in the surface due to the process on how it is made, polycrystalline solar panels give off a blue color. Since they are made up of multiple silicon crystals, the space for electrons to move around become less, making this kind of panels less efficient in heat and low-light conditions compared to its counterpart.

On a bright side, since they produce less waster material and therefore definitely easier and simpler to produce, the polycrystalline solar panels cost less and is a popular choice for solar clients who are conscious on their budget.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Monocrystalline solar panels are derived from a single silicon crystalline which gives off its uniform and black hue appearance. These panels are made up of pure cells which makes them highly efficient even in higher temperatures or low-light conditions.

The production of monocrystalline solar panels is more time consuming and complex. It produces more waste material since every silicon are cut into squares and trimmed off to create the famous cell shape we know about. Hence, it is more expensive compared to the polycrystalline solar panels

So what should you choose?

Both polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels have its own set of pros and cons. Are you leaning more in aesthetics of black and blue or panel efficiency? Do you want more energy and space efficient solar panels or stick to your current budget and financial options?

While both panels differ in a lot of aspects and may cater to more to one factor than the other, polycrystalline and monocrystalline solar panels will still perform their intended purpose of harvesting the sun’s energy for you and are guaranteed to have a long lifespan and 25-year power output production. Definitely, a win-win return of investment in 5 years for a typical Solaric grid tie system.

GOING SOLAR: HOW YOU CAN BECOME ENERGY EFFICIENT

GOING SOLAR: HOW YOU CAN BECOME ENERGY EFFICIENT

What does it really mean to be an energy efficient individual? Watch this video to find out!

Defined as using less energy or resources to perform and produce the same output, energy efficiency and solar are always usually closely affiliated with each other. The traditional and old use of non-renewable energy to produce energy creates pollution and harmful greenhouse gasses which is why investing in Solar and energy efficient devices are considered synergistic in reducing energy consumption, generate savings for the consumers and help the environment.

Introducing our client:

Introducing our client:

Carlos from Quezon City made it a goal to prioritize energy efficiency when he bought and renovated his home way back in 2019. He installed large windows, ceiling fans, skylights – and one of his biggest investments, a 1.7kWp Grid Tie Solar system. He firmly believes that energy efficiency should not only be practiced by companies, corporations, and the government, but it should also be done in an individual level.

Before solar, his bill ranges around Php 2,500, but after the installation, his bill was reduced to Php 900! Fast forward to 2020 and 2021 – when we are now struck by the deadly COVID-19 pandemic: he believes that without solar, his monthly electric bill would immediately shoot up to at least 4k with the work from home setup and the kids homeschooling. But because they are ready and have turned on the sun, the monthly bill only is only Php 1,300!

Go SOLAR now!

Go SOLAR now!

Solaric always tell those who are interested to turn on the sun that it is alright to start small and put up solar that just sits right with your current consumption and budget. Being energy efficient by investing in such technologies and services like solar, you will get to reduce your electric bill expenses and carbon footprint. A typical Solaric system eliminates more than four tons of CO2 per year which is equivalent to planting 50 trees each year. SOLAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

SOLAR CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE

How important it really is to clean and maintain your solar energy system in pristine condition?

Solar cleaning and maintenance’s main objective is to ensure that there are no hindrances that can affect the amount of sun’s energy harvested by your solar panels and to make sure that your system is functioning within its expected capacity. The ultimate goal is to maximize the solar system’s performance for at least 25 years.

There are a lot of things to consider that may affect a PV system’s performance such as environmental and external factors. These may include dust accumulation or soiling, or bird deposits that we cannot really avoid. Solar inverters might already have loose screws or terminals, and in some cases, cable or material damage which is caused by rodents eating wires. It is important have your solar power system inspected from time to time, for any terms of fault or damage. Solaric offers an Annual Cleaning and Maintenance Service. This is aside from your usual checking of your online monitoring system to view your solar production and performance.

Always remember that prolonged dust and dirt accumulation, accompanied by rain and humid weather may cause cementing. These particles might cause a performance loss due to shading, permanent damage and deterioration to solar panels in the long run. Anyone can clean their own solar panels as long as you observe proper safety practices. Some hardened dust particles are more difficult to remove which is why you need to observe extreme caution when dealing with these kinds of residues. You may also get in touch with Solaric, if you need help in cleaning and maintenance of your solar energy system.

SOLAR MISCONCEPTIONS

SOLAR MISCONCEPTIONS

Yes, solar is aesthetically pleasing, yes it gives you monthly electric savings, and yes it helps the environment, but how safe is it really to put solar panels on your roof?

There is more to savings and aesthetics when you have solar on your roof
Aside from providing you the guilt-free pleasure of turning on the air-conditioning units without fear of bill shock, solar can literally provide a cooling effect on your homes by serving as an umbrella for your roof.

Solar panels block the direct hit of the sun to your roof which helps lower the temperature inside your home. It also serves as a posh pabigat or added weight to you roof which is beneficial during strong storms and typhoons, preventing your roof from being wiped out by strong winds.

What if my roof is damaged during installation?

This is where the importance of a reputable and reliable solar installer plays a crucial role. Always make sure to avoid fly-by-night solar companies that don’t have sufficient experience. The end results are faulty and erroneous installations that may cause leaks or unwanted holes and damages to your roof. Your solar provider should also have a good after sales team, in case of questions and concerns after system energization.

Solaric offers and delivers on its superior service warranty. We are committed to rectify any leaks that will occur in the areas where the solar panels are installed as part of our superior workmanship service. Our team also conducts leak tests after the installation to make sure that there are no leaks after the installation.

THE RISE OF SOLAR HYBRID SYSTEMS

THE RISE OF SOLAR HYBRID SYSTEMS

A common question we always encounter for people who have just recently decided to go solar is: Will the solar work during brownouts?

Technically, yes it can – when you integrate batteries into your solar setup. Solaric can also step further ahead and give you the combination of both worlds, which is also becoming a popular choice recently with our clients: The hybrid solar system.

What is a hybrid solar power system?

What is a hybrid solar power system?

A hybrid solar power system is basically a combination of a grid tie and off-grid solar setup. This type of system can provide you power during the night and during power outages. Typically, Solaric does not recommend hybrid setups in Metro Manila where grid is relatively stable. The typical hybrid solar setup is usually recommended for power-starved areas, or places where the grid is unreliable and power is intermittent. However, due to the recent issues of constant brownouts caused by insufficient supply of electricity to the grid, the pandemic, and natural disasters, we have seen an increase in interest and awareness for battery-integrated setups like the Solaric hybrid system.

Energy independence

Hybrid setups allows users to have complete control and flexibility on their consumption with the energy harvested by the solar. It allows you to store power in the batteries for later use instead of immediately selling it back to the grid, which also makes sense given that the utility company only credits you less than half of the cost of the electricity you buy from them.

Hybrid setups continue to grow at a rapid pace especially with a lot of people considering the importance of preparedness and wanting the reliability and assurance of solar power systems with batteries, or energy storage systems, especially during grid outages and natural calamities. Solaric offers lithium-ion batteries and uses the Alpha ESS SMILE5. Improvements in technology has also made lithium batteries cheaper compared to 2012, thus making hybrid systems more affordable and cost-competitive.
