Every single year, we are plagued with news of rotational brownouts due to the thinning supply of electricity in our grid.
Earlier this month, the Department of Energy (DOE), raised yellow and red alerts for three straight days, and gave a warning to the electricity consumers of rotational brownouts in some areas. Yellow alerts are raised when the power reserves are thin and a red alert when there is an insufficient energy reserve that may result in rotational power interruptions. To add salt to the injury, there is also a possibility of electricity rates going up due to the insufficient power supply and increase of electricity prices in WESM. The DOE indicated that the supply issues were caused by the sudden shutdowns and extended scheduled maintenance of some of the large power generation plants.
The recent hot temperatures are one of the huge factors in the increased energy demand. Time never goes backwards, and with the increasing population and new challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, there is one stark realization. If we do not produce solutions to address the problems, the Philippines will continue to suffer yearly power outages which can lead to a worse power supply outage and higher electricity costs. Is there still a hope left for every Juan?
Sustainable energy for every Juan
The recurring power outages that we experience due to the country’s dependence on fossil fuel and non-renewable energy, affects vast number of households and businesses nationwide in numerous ways. It always comes back to the country’s need for more stable, reliable, and sustainable source of energy. The Renewable Energy Act of 2008 or RA 9513 aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy resources such as solar energy to achieve self-reliance and reduce the country’s dependence to fossil fuels. It also aims to promote the efficient and cost-effective commercial application of renewable energy.
The higher energy cost and threat of unexpected brownouts are one of the factors why Solaric has seen a vast increase of residential and business owners who turn to solar energy for solutions. While it also decreases the monthly electricity bills, a lot of these Solaristas are looking to reduce their carbon footprint and help the environment in the long run while being energy and financially secured for the next 25 years or more.
While it may take years to build more coal plants to increase the energy supply of the country, making your home a self-generating power plant by installing a solar energy system can only take 2 to 3 days. Not only that, but any excess solar energy that is not consumed during daytime will automatically exported to the grid to add to the thinning supply and through the net metering program, the power can also be exchanged for night time/weekend credits. The Philippines sits in a renewable goldmine since we receive a higher amount of sun’s energy per year. Taking advantage of solar power can bring a lot of huge benefits not only for us, but for the future generations to come.
